- A 2014 Associated Press FCS All-American selection, David Johnson is the 17th Northern Iowa player ever to be taken in the NFL Draft and just the second RB (Randy Schultz, 74th overall, Cleveland). He was UNI's highest draft pick in 15 years (Brad Meester, 60th overall in 2000 to the Jaguars).
- The Cardinals third round selection (86th overall) in the 2015 NFL Draft, David Johnson became just the second Northern Iowa player ever selected by the Cardinals, joining Brandon Keith, who was taken in the seventh round (225th overall) in 2008. Prior to the Cardinals selection of Johnson, Keith was also the last Northern Iowa player taken in the NFL Draft.
- During his career at Northern Iowa, David Johnson broke 15 school records, including the career and single-season marks for rushing yards, rushing TDs, rushing yards per game, all-purpose yards, all-purpose yards per game and total TDs.
- While at UNI, David Johnson earned his way on the Dean's List twice for having a GPA of 3.5 or above and was a 3.0 honoree for multiple semesters. Johnson worked full-time jobs all four summers while at NIU. He worked on a crew removing asbestos his first summer and he worked 5:30 AM to 2:00 PM every day over the final three summers as a maintenance man in the school dorms.
