Canaletto was born on 28 October 1697 in Venice, Republic of Venice. Canaletto is known for The Queen's Palaces (2011). Canaletto died on 19 April 1768 in Venice, Republic of Venice.
Many of his pictures were sold to Englishmen on their Grand Tour (traditional trip of Europe undertaken by mainly upper-class young men of means) via merchant Joseph Smith (later appointed British Consul in Venice in 1744). Smith sold much of his collection to King George III. Buckingham Palace today houses the largest collection of Canaletto's works.
