- Son of World War II British Field Marshal Bernard L. Montgomery.
- Inherited his father's title - Viscount Montgomery of Alamein - after his father's death.
- He served in an army tank regiment, and graduated from the University of Cambridge in 1950. He worked in Asia and South America for the Shell Oil company, then became an executive for Yardley cosmetics. He was fluent in Spanish and Portuguese, and started a consulting firm that was involved in South American business opportunities.
- He held London city government positions before entering the House of Lords, where he served off and on from the 1970s until 2015.
