Horror has a long history of exploiting mental illness to create its monsters, but there are still relatively few films which place us inside the head of a person struggling with it, a person who desperately doesn’t want to become a danger to others. Christian Schultz and Thomas Johnston’s Presence is such a film, though it also has a number of other things going on, and some of these intersect awkwardly to dilute its overall effect.
We follow Jen (Jenna Lyng Adams), a woman whose struggle to manage her emotions is apparent at the outset, as is the difficulty she has had in maintaining a social life, probably as a result of people’s reactions to this. Two important figures in her life appear early on. There’s Sam (Alexandria DeBerry), who has apparently shown no interest in her for some time, but who turns up out of the blue to give her.

Directed by Christian Schultz from a screenplay co-written with Peter Ambrosio, Presence relocates the haunted house setting to a luxury yacht. The extreme isolation of being at sea provides fertile ground to explore what makes a haunting; is it a product of a fractured mind or something supernatural? Presence attempts to straddle the line between psychological and supernatural, but its vague approach to storytelling casts its horror adrift.
Jennifer (The Kominsky Method’s Jenna Lyng Adams) struggles to piece her life back together once leaving New York after a mental break. She’s plagued by horrific dreams in which she kills Keaton (Octavio Pisano), prone to panic attacks, and suffers further anxiety from being unable to reach her friend and business partner Sam (Alexandria DeBerry) for months. Then Sam reappears out of the blue with a lucrative business proposition from billionaire David (Dave Davis) that has the pair set off...

"One bad dream can't ruin everything." Or maybe it can?? XYZ Films has revealed an official trailer for an indie horror thriller film titled Presence, marking the narrative feature debut of up-and-coming filmmaker Christian Schultz. This initially premiered at Panic Fest and will be out on VOD in November next month. Two young business partners are invited to a week-long private yachting voyage with a potential investor. At night, Jennifer's dreams begin to bleed into reality as the others realize that Jennifer may have unknowingly brought something sinister on-board. What dark secrets is she hiding from them? This stars Jenna Lyng Adams, Dave Davis, Alexandria DeBerry, Major Dodge, & Octavio Pisano. Unsurprisingly the film looks entirely unoriginal, with plenty of cliche tropes, topped off with a rich guy and a big yacht. Watch out. ›››

In the mainstream media, especially in a deeply polarised country like the USA, stereotypes abound regarding unhoused people living in large cities. But homelessness is often just one or two missed paychecks away; with no two people living on the streets there for the same reason. In his lyrical and poetic documentary, Christian Schultz (last seen on Dn here) drops in on the lives of three unhoused people on the streets of Austin, Texas. Eschewing explicit political aims in favour of an empathetic deep dive – deploying stark black and white cinematography, poetic voiceover, a great sense of nature and beauty, intimate close-ups and flowing Steadicam shots – the final result is a touching, transformative experience that really gets us inside its subjects’ lives. We talked to Schultz alongside Dop Oscar Ignacio Jiménez about avoiding generic talking points, the benefits of monochrome and the advantages of shooting a documentary like this with minimal crew.

With so much content out there, from films to television to short clips on YouTube and TikTok, how does an artist manage to keep their originality? Perhaps originality is not something we are born with, but something that can be developed over time. With Cultivating Originality with Director Jodeb from filmmaker Christian Schultz (last seen on Dn here), we get face-to-face insights from Jodeb himself, otherwise known as Jonathan Desbiens, resulting in a tender portrait of a man unafraid to tread his own dogged artistic path; one that gives us both a sense of his career success and the unique ways that he looks at finding inspiration. We talked to Schultz about creating the film as part of the Musicbed Make series, avoiding a conventional approach to depicting someone best known for their Edm music videos, and the key lessons he took to heart as a director himself from his meeting with Jodeb.
