Lester Holt’s next NBC job takes him from serious “Nightly News” to a part of the TV schedule once known for being more animated.
The veteran anchor will this weekend debut his “Kids’ Edition” of NBC’s evening newscast on its Saturday A.M. schedule, just in time to talk about the looming 2020 election — and Halloween, to boot.
“I don’t have to wear a tie, which is always fun,” quips Holt in a recent interview.
Holt’s dress may be casual, but there’s something potentially consequential about the maneuver, and not just because the anchor often uses the program to answer children’s questions about the coronavirus pandemic. “Nightly News: Kids” Edition” (complete with a young person doing a voice-over introduction) has been streaming once or twice a week on NBCNews.com since it debuted in April, and NBC’s interest in trying it on traditional television...

In 2012, Khavn wrote an editorial for a retrospective of Filipino films titled “Philippine New Wave” that took place at the 65th Edinburgh International Film Festival. In this text, he mentions, “Now we come to this third peaking, the third coming of age of a cinema that defies easy categorization. After more than a decade of near silence, Philippine cinema is once again vibrant, plucky and so wildly diverse, that each filmmaker could be his or her own “new wave.”
On the one hand, there are the lengthy, minimalist, poetic films of Lav Diaz, and on the other, the ostensibly avant-garde and distinctly regional storytelling of young turks like Christopher Gozum. (…)
The icing on the cake is, of course, Brillante Mendoza’s best director win at Cannes for “Kinatay.”
This period is unprecedented. There has never before been recognition of this magnitude and relentless consistency for Filipino filmmakers, and there has...

Some TV doctors seem to be ignoring the real-world Hippocratic oath.
In recent weeks, a trio of popular dispensers of lifestyle advice – Drew Pinsky, Mehmet Oz and Phil McGraw – have appeared on media outlets or via digital video downplaying the threat of the coronavirus pandemic, with remarks that undermine their credibility and urge people to take steps that could cause harm. Pinsky in sundry February and March appearances suggested to followers that the coronavirus would be “way less virulent than the flu.” Oz told viewers of Fox News Channel’s “Hannity” in a guest segment earlier this week that having children go back to school might be “appetizing” despite the fact it could potentially help spread the contagion.
Backlash to the appearances was so severe that Pinsky apologized, noting his comments were “incorrect.” Oz this week admitted that he “misspoke.”

Lester Holt is about to discuss hard news with a softer touch.
The “NBC Nightly News” anchor will lead an experimental version of NBC’s flagship newscast aimed specifically at children and teens. The first edition of “Nightly News Kids Edition” streams this evening on YouTube and the show, and viewed as a test within NBC News, is likely to appear at least twice per week and potentially with greater frequency.
“Kids are no different than the rest of us. They’re a little scared and they want answers,” says Holt. “But they also want to be empowered and so we wanted to put together a broadcast that would inform and also provide inspiring stories of what other young people are doing around the country.”
With the venture, NBC News takes a step on what has often been a tricky path. Kids represent the next generation of news aficionados, but...

NBC News will kick off a new show next week that’s scheduled to appear for the next three Tuesdays. But there is some sense among executives that it could keep going for weeks.
The new one-hour “‘NBC News Special Report: Coronavirus Pandemic” will air across NBC, MSNBC and the live-streaming outlet NBC News Now starting March 31 at 10 p.m., taking over a time slot normally reserved for primetime dramas like “New Amsterdam.” Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie will anchor the show in its first week, and Lester Holt is also expected to anchor the series as it continues.
And while NBC News has produced all kinds of special programs over the years, there is little precedent for a report such as this. “There is no playbook” for covering a pandemic that has already changed life in the United States in many ways, says Rashida Jones, senior vice president of...

Networks are ramping up their coronavirus coverage, as concerns escalate of a worldwide spread, major public events are postponed or canceled, and Wall Street experienced its worst week since the 2008 financial crisis.
The White House contends that the media is raising unnecessary alarm about the virus and its spread in the U.S., even with the intent of hurting President Donald Trump.
As he headed out to a rally in South Carolina on Friday, Trump told reporters, “I think that CNN is a very disreputable network. I think that they are doing everything they can to instill fear in people.”
Earlier in the day, his acting chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney, appeared at the Conservative Political Action Conference and told the crowd that “the reason you’re seeing so much attention to it today is that they think this is going to be the thing that brings down the president.
