He was a York University professor, he is widely recognized for his scholarly work on the history of the Canadian labur movement and Jewish Canadian history. His writings and lectures have helped us to appreciate the rich and diverse roots of our country, and broadened our understanding of the contributions generations of immigrants have made to Canada.

It revealed the largely untold story of Canada's anti-immigrant policies toward Jewish refugees. He was also critical of Canada's postwar acceptance of thousands of Nazi collaborators and war criminals, particularly the members of the Waffen-SS Galicia Division.
