- Alvey's writing influences include Shirley Jackson, Daphne du Maurier, Stephen King, Diablo Cody, Alex Garland, Mike Flanagan, Leigh Whannell, and Guillermo del Toro.
- Watching Jennifer's Body (2009) in the theatre at fifteen made Alvey realize she wanted to be a horror filmmaker. Watching Absentia (2011) in college further solidified this.
