Entered the Army's Air Transport Command in 1940, serving with the Army Air Forces and the Navy during World War II. He also had served on the air crew that transported President Franklin D. Roosevelt to the Tehran Conference.
After the war, he worked for what became the Central Intelligence Agency for seven years, then transferred to the White House staff about 1952.
