Barcelona-based studio Filmax has scooped international rights to “Just One Small Favor,” the new film from Zeta Studios, which is behind Netflix smash hit “Elite” and HBO Max Spanish banner title “García!”

Released in Spain by Universal on Nov. 10, “Favor” will receive its market premiere at this week’s American Film Market.

Directed by Juana Macías (“We Are Pregnant”), the acerbic screwball family comedy is set at the swanky summer home of the well-off Gallardos, cared for meticulously by Amparito, a second mother to the three children.

In her dying wish, she asked to be buried in the family vault. When the Gallardos refuse, they receive letters from Amparito, revealing skeletons in the closet and damaging home truths, turning their lives upside down.

Spanish director Alauda Ruiz de Azúa, who swept the board at March’s Málaga Film Festival, has wrapped shooting on her sophomore feature, “Eres Tú,” a Netflix’ romantic comedy produced by Antonio Asensio and Paloma Molina at Zeta Studios ­­– the Madrid-based company behind phenomenon “Elite.” Miriam Rodríguez executive produces.

After distributing Almodovar and signing up J.A. Bayona for real-life disaster drama “Society of the Snow,” Ruiz de Azúa’s attachment to “Eres tú” marks another association with a prestige director by Netflix in Spain.

Netflix Spain already accounts for three of the five most watched non-English Netflix movies ever: “The Platform,” “Below Zero” and “Through My Window.” It is, however, progressively diversifying its slate of series, movies, documentaries and TV shows by incorporating different creators profiles to create potential crowd-pleasers.

“Eres tú” follows Javier who, when 16 and kissing a girl for the first time, discovers that he had a gift of romantic clairvoyance.

The streamer has also launched two reality TV projects.

Netflix Spain has unveiled a slate of seven new film and TV projects, including a romantic feature directed by Marçal Fores.

A Través De Mi Ventana (which translates as ‘Through My Window’) is an adaptation of Venezuelan author Ariana Godoy’s novel of the same name.

The novel was written via online story creation website Wattpad, which has previously been home to adaptations including Netflix hit The Kissing Booth and the successful After series.

Exclusive: Exile Content has teamed with Pulp Fiction producer Lawrence Bender to acquire the rights to Azam Ahmed’s New York Times article, “He Was One of Mexico’s Deadliest Assassins. Then He Turned on His Cartel”. Exile and Bender are currently developing the story into a film or series with Ahmed and Caitlin Roper as producers.

Ahmed co-wrote the article with Paulina Villegas which was published in December 2019. It tells the story of a man who became one of the deadliest assassins in Mexico who eventually taken into custody via a makeshift witness protection program. He eventually fell back into the deadly trade. “This will never end, no matter what I do,” he said in the New York Times story. “But I just won’t be a part of it anymore.”

This is not the first story from Ahmed that has been acquired to be developed into a project.

Blumhouse has acquired the rights to The New York Times’ story about Miriam Rodríguez, the Mexican mother who fearlessly tracked down the kidnappers who abducted and murdered her daughter, Karen.

Rodriguez — who went on to become a prominent human rights activist, helping to imprison 10 members of the local cartel in San Fernando — was shot and killed in front of her home on Mother’s Day in 2017. Blumhouse won the rights to the Times story, titled “She Stalked Her Daughter’s Killers Across Mexico, One by One,” which spawned an immediate bidding war after it was published on Dec. 13.

Azam Ahmed, the story’s writer, will produce the project alongside Caitlin Roper, the Nyt’s executive producer for scripted projects, and Blumhouse’s Jason Blum.
