Earlier this month, Sony Pictures and 21 Laps – the production company behind the hit Netflix series Stranger Things – came out the winners in a competitive bidding situation over the feature film rights to the horror short film Gnomes, which was directed by Ruwan Suresh Heggelman from a script he crafted with Jasper ten Hoor and Richard Raaphorst. Heggelman will be directing the feature, but Deadline reports that Sony and 21 Laps have hired an established Hollywood screenwriting duo to write the script this time around. Those writers are Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari, whose previous credits include Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp and the Hulu thriller No Exit. Barrer also wrote the 2013 horror film Haunt, on which Ferrari served as an executive producer.

For some time, Dutch director Ruwan Heggelman and producer Richard Raaphorst (director of Frankenstein's Army) have been working on several projects, but one of the funniest of these must be their gory short Gnomes. In it, a runner on her morning walk (played by Moïse Trustfull) takes a different route through the forest for a change, unaware that she enters the territory of a very aggressive tribe of minute fairy tale creatures... and they have plans with her.
