“Young Rock” is done.
NBC made the decision official on Friday, canceling the half-hour comedy series inspired by Dwayne Johnson’s life after three seasons.
“Young Rock” followed young Dwayne Johnson as he navigated his rise from unknown wrestler to Hollywood superstar. Together, Dwayne and his unorthodox family faced locker room politics, new rivalries and the perils of burgeoning fame as he found his voice in the WWE as The Rock. Told through stories from his own life, the show followed Dwayne’s journey to the top and the characters that kept him grounded — even as he set his sights on ever-bigger arenas.
Adrian Groulx, Bradley Constant and Uli Latukefu played young Dwayne during various stages of his childhood. Joseph Lee Anderson portrayed Dwayne’s late father, Rocky, while Stacey Leilua played his mother, Ata.
The show wrapped its third (and now final) season Feb. 24, averaging less than 2 million viewers per episode.

NBC has made decisions on two of its three bubble comedies and one of its four pilots.
The network has opted to cancel sophomore series Grand Crew and third-year show Young Rock, leaving fellow comedy American Auto on the bubble. As part of NBC’s comedy moves Friday, the network has handed out a series order to the mockumentary series St. Denis Medical. There is no word yet on the fates of NBC’s three remaining pilots, comedy Non-Evil Twin with Amber Ruffin and dramas Murder by the Book and Wolf.
St. Denis Medical, in the vein of ABC’s breakout Emmy darling Abbott Elementary, is described as a mockumentary about an underfunded, understaffed Oregon hospital where the dedicated doctors and nurses try their best to treat patients while maintaining their own sanity. Wendi McClendon-Covey stars in the Universal TV series, marking her first role after she wrapped a 10-season...

NBC has yet to make decisions about three of its comedies.
American Auto, Grand Crew and Young Rock all remain on the bubble after the network unveiled its fall schedule with these three shows absent from fall and midseason.
NBC said “decisions are yet to be made” on the trio.
American Auto comes from Superstore creator Justin Spitzer. The series premiered its second season in January and it ended its 13-episode run in April.
Starring Ana Gasteyer, Harriet Dyer and Jon Barinholtz, American Auto hails from Spitzer and Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment. Written by Spitzer, American Auto is set at the headquarters of a major American automotive company in Detroit, where a floundering group of executives try to rediscover the company identity amidst a rapidly changing industry.
Harriet Dyer, Humphrey Ker, Michael B. Washington, Tye White and X Mayo also star.
Spitzer executive produces via his Spitzer Holding Company with Kapital’s Kaplan.

“Young Rock” stars Dwayne Johnson as himself as he runs for president in 2032 with weekly flashbacks to one of three periods of his life: when he was 10, 15 and a college student at the University of Miami. To say that casting three young versions of the man who would grow up to be The Rock was a huge endeavor would be an understatement.

The Rock is running for President, or at least Dwayne Johnson is running for President in the set up for the brand-new NBC series “Young Rock”. The series is certainly far from your ordinary run-of-the-mill sitcom, as it features a semi-autobiographical into the life of Dwayne Johnson and how he became “The Rock”. The series stars Dwayne Johnson, himself, and then three other actors portray Johnson and different stages throughout his life. Adrian Groulx plays Johnson as a kid living in Hawaii, Bradley Constant plays him as a teen in Pennsylvania who shoplifted and seemed destined to fall down the wrong path and Uli Latukefu showcases him as a University of Miami football player. Johnson bookends each episode with interviews that take place in the year 2032 with a journalist played by Randall Park as he reflects on these aspects of his life while on the campaign trail. The storylines featured...

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Scott Thompson on Wbgr-fm on February 18th, 2021, reviewing the new TV series “Young Rock,” Tuesdays on NBC-tv.
“Young Rock” is about media sensation Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, chronicling his early years in three phases, portrayed by three different actors. First phase, as a 12-year-old (Adrian Groulx) with a wrestling Dad from the 1970s/80s named Rocky “Soul Man” Johnson, and the assorted characters he worked with including the Iron Sheik and Andre the Giant. Second, nicknamed as “Dewey” (Bradley Constant), he’s a broke high schooler trying to learn his way in life. And third, as a college footballer (Uli Latukefu) determined to make his way in a new world. This is all framed with a sit-down interview of The Rock in reality (albeit running for president) by the great Randall Park.

Dwayne Johnson's new show, Young Rock, premiered on NBC on Tuesday night, and many fans are wondering whether it's based on a true story. Well, the short answer to that is yes.
Even though the show takes place in the year 2032 and Johnson isn't actually running for president in real life (although many probably wish he would), Young Rock is an autobiographical sitcom that highlights real-life events from the actor's formative years.
"All these stories, finally, we started thinking, 'I wonder if there's value in creating a show that has the lens of comedy, but to be able to share the life lessons I've learned,'" Johnson explained during a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. "We wanted to figure out three points in my life that were defining times: when I was 10 years old living here in Hawaii, when I was 15 years old after multiple...

Before he was The Rock, he was just Dwayne Johnson… or, as the wrestler-turned-movie star’s autobiographical NBC sitcom Young Rock tells us, just “Dewey.”
Young Rock hops across decades to tell The Rock’s colorful life story, and Tuesday’s series premiere kicks off in the year 2032, with Johnson (playing himself) on the campaign trail running for president (!). In an interview with Randall Park — who’s ditched acting for journalism, it seems — The Rock hits back at claims he’s a Hollywood elitist, insisting that he’s had to work hard for everything he’s ever gotten in life.

Not every sitcom ends with its audience furiously Googling, “Is The Rock running for president?” — and honestly, it’s hard to tell if one ever should.
While the answer remains inconclusive, the question hovers over “Young Rock” like the Ghost of Elections Yet to Come. NBC’s new sitcom tells Dwayne Johnson’s life story, and it frames that story around a fictional 2032 presidential race, in which the former professional wrestler, college football player, and action star has landed one party’s nomination for America’s highest office. In an effort to connect with the voters, with the people, Johnson gets real with reporters on the campaign trail and starts telling stories from his childhood.
Each tale (or two) frames an episode, which might focus on his adolescence in Hawaii, when a 10-year-old Rock (played by Adrian Groulx) idolized his pro wrestler father, Rocky (Joseph Lee Anderson), and abided by his mom,...

How ‘Young Rock’ Star Bradley Constant Played 15-Year-Old Dwayne Johnson as More Than a ‘Badass Kid’
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has made a career out of being larger than life, but for “Young Rock” star Bradley Constant, the challenge wasn’t mimicking the former pro-wrestler’s outsized persona but finding the insecure 15-year-old underneath.
“It was never pressed upon me to make sure I was a badass kid,” Constant said in an interview with TheWrap. “We all talked a lot about him being a real kid who’s dealing with real issues, and how that shows up in the show.”
The series, which comes from “Fresh off the Boat” duo Nahnatchka Khan and Jeff Chiang, charts Johnson’s growth from 10-year-old Dewey Johnson growing up in Hawaii to college athlete to wrestling superstar (to future presidential candidate?). Constant plays the 15-year-old version of Johnson who struggles to balance his two main priorities: impressing girls and being good to his mom.
