[Note: With the film out next week in the UK, here’s a reposting of our review of The 100 Candles Game (aka 100 Candles) from its US release earlier this year]
Where to start with The 100 Candles Game? How about the fact this is actually yet another one of those direct to DVD anthologies made up of numerous unconnected shorts which are contained within a wraparound story filmed specifically for this release – think Zombieworld, Galaxy of Horrors, Battle in Space or A Night of Horror: Nightmare Radio. And its the latter anthology that is most connected to 100 Candles, as both films come from producer Nicolás Onetti; with A Night of Horror: Nightmare Radio‘s writer Guillermo Lockhart also directing here – namely the wraparound segment of the film.

In a decaying mansion, in the middle of the night, old friends sit in a circle surrounded by 100 candles. They are about to play a game.
The rules of the game are simple. Each of them, in turn, has to tell a scary story, then take a candle into the neighbouring room, alone, and look into the old mirror standing there. If they're lucky, they'll see nothing but their own reflection. if they're unlucky, what they see will drive them mad. As the game goes on, a portal will begin to open - a portal which might give each of them access to something they very much desire. No matter what happens, though, they must not stop playing the game once it has begun.
This central, interlinking story is by far the silliest part of Mauro Croche and Guillermo Lockhart's otherwise serviceable horror anthology. It's no heavily laden with cliché that.

Our friend Nico Onetti has been working on another collection of horror short films after his recent project A Night of Horror: Nightmare Radio gained some traction on the festival circuit recently. Titled Asylum: Twisted Horror and Fantasy Tales this new collection features a fresh wrap around story directed by Carlos Goitia (Onetti`s Abrakadabra and What the Waters Left Behind) which was written by horror novelists Guillermo Lockhart and Mauro Croche. Brandon prepares to give his last stand-up comedy show. As his stories and jokes pass, the public begins to cheer up. But at that precise moment Brandon will realize that these stories have a strong relationship with his past. More than he imagines... This new anthology will have its world premiere...
