Taylor Sheridan’s 1883 is one of the most popular Western prequel series and a fitting series that takes place before the events of Yellowstone. The prequel stories told the story of why the Dutton family decided to settle in Montana. The series features Tim McGraw and Faith Hill in the roles of James Dutton and Margaret Dutton in the lead role, and they travel from Tennessee to Fort Worth, Texas to start a new life.

After over a year hiatus, Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2 has begun production in Montana, as earlier promised and then revealed by Paramount Network Monday. The Western drama series approaches its close with the final episodes predicted to land in November later this year.
Four and a half seasons of the Taylor Sheridan series have followed the Dutton Family, led by patriarch Kevin Costner’s John Dutton, who oversees the largest cattle ranch in the modern-day United States. The Dutton family faces constant challenges from those at its borders — the growing Bozeman, Montana, the fictional Indian reservation of Broken Rock and America’s first national park.
With several prequel series and a contemporary spinoff in the works, the original installment was originally set to conclude at the end of 2023, but the WGA and SAG strikes delayed production on the final episodes.

Following the resounding success of the Yellowstone prequel 1883, creator Taylor Sheridan delved even deeper into the Dutton family history and launched 1923. In an interview, Sheridan shed light on an intriguing aspect of the prequel. He revealed that during the development of 1883, Paramount expressed interest in a storyline that he personally didn’t feel was appropriate just to milk it even more.

Actor Sam Elliott is regarded as one of the most talented actors in the industry who is also known for his full mustache and deep & sonorous voice. The actor appeared in the Western drama miniseries 1883 created by Taylor Sheridan. The miniseries serves as the first of several prequels of Sheridan’s Yellowstone and goes into detail of how Duttons came to own the land which is now known as Yellowstone Ranch.
The ten-episode long limited series was released in December 2021 and to introduce the prequel to the audience of Yellowstone viewers, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill appeared on Yellowstone. The stars appeared as James and Margaret Dutton in a flashback scene. 1883 followed the story of the post-Civil War generation of the Dutton family and their journey to Fort Worth, Texas before settling in Montana. Sam Elliott starred as Shea Brennan and had a very surprising opinion when it came to Yellowstone.

Following the success of chaotic cowboy drama Yellowstone, co-creator Taylor Sheridan has been given an entire book of blank checks, and has cashed as many as he could manage in just five years. While his involvement in these TV projects wavers, sometimes drastically, his brand has always been on point.
With over half a dozen shows now within the House of Sheridan, let’s take a look at how each program measures up against the rest of the catalog.
7. Lawmen: Bass Reeves
The story of real life American folk legend Bass Reeves (David Oyelowo) was originally supposed to be a larger cog in the Yellowstone prequel machine, but as it continued to evolve, it became its own standalone project, which works both for and against the show. Part of the charm of the Yellowstone prequels for any Sheridan fan is getting to search for connections between the different generations of the Dutton family.

Remember when 1883 Season 1 launched on Paramount Network out of Yellowstone?
At the time, a handful of episodes aired before viewers had to stream the rest of the episodes on Paramount+.
It caused a lot of commotion amongst fans who did not have the streaming service.

When Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan announced the project that would become 1883: The Bass Reeves Story in 2021 it was intended to be an entirely standalone project. However, it’s since been tied into the Yellowstone family after Paramount+ leadership pressed Sheridan to bring 1883 back for a second season. Because many of the characters in 1883 ultimately died when they chose to stay in a fort with thieves after the Duttons, Shea Brennan, Risa, Josef, and Noemi, and the children moved on, Sheridan felt there wasn’t a way to continue the story. Ultimately, Risa and Shea both die, and Josef...

Audiences are captivated by Yellowstone, the critically acclaimed TV drama that follows the Dutton family and their lives at their ranch in rugged, wild Montana. The show is led by a star-studded cast that includes Kevin Costner, Luke Grimes, Kelly Reilly, Wes Bentley, and more. With so much viewer love for this world, there are already two spin-off series including 1883, starring Sam Elliott. And though that series seemed to end pretty definitively, could there be room for yet another spin-off?

When he was young, he saw a classic Universal monster movie in theaters. The screening helped motivate him to become an actor.
Sam Elliott’s career and recent role
Elliott got his first acting credit back in 1969 in an episode of Judd for the Defense. He continued working in television over the years before transitioning to films. His movies include Mask and Fatal Legacy, and The Big Lebowski is one of his most notable appearances.

Sam Elliott, the mustachioed actor best known for roles in “1883,” “A Star Is Born” and “The Big Lebowski,” sat on Variety‘s Talks, presented by Paramount+, for a meditation on endings and beginnings throughout his long career.
Born and raised in Sacramento, Elliott explained his love for filmmaking developed as a result of frequent visits to The Sequoia, his local theater. At the age of 9, he saw “Creature from the Black Lagoon” (1954), which he credits as a major source of inspiration in committing to acting: “I wanted to make an audience feel what that magic was doing up there,” Elliott said.
A deep dive through the Variety archives yielded insight on the first time Elliott’s name ever appeared in print. Elliott shared a laugh with Cynthia Littleton, Variety Co-Editor in Chief, when she surprised him with a copy of his first-ever reference in Variety, a two-line item from...

Although no member of the Screen Actors Guild Award-nominated “Yellowstone” cast has yet been individually recognized by the organization, the team can now take pride in the fact that a performer within their recently expanded franchise has caught the attention of their guild peers. Four years after losing on his film ensemble and supporting bids for “A Star Is Born,” Sam Elliott is a Best TV Movie/Miniseries Actor nominee thanks to his work on the “Yellowstone” prequel program “1883.” If he succeeds on this outing, the 78-year-old will be the second oldest man to ever pull off a solo SAG Award win for TV acting.

1883 concluded on Paramount+ earlier this year.
Despite the streaming service ordering up a second season ahead of the finale, Taylor Sheridan has revealed that he wanted to end that chapter.
However, Sheridan has opened up in a new interview with Deadline to reveal that Paramount+ wanted him to reverse some significant deaths to keep the show alive.
Sheridan touched upon the "autonomy" he's been given following the runaway success of the original Yellowstone on Paramount Network.
"No one has had the freedom I've had since Robert Evans ran Paramount," he told Deadline.
"Bobby Evans had made movies before he became the head of the studio and so he understood how to turn them loose. If you trust them, trust them, and turn them loose."
"And under his regime, Paramount made some of the best movies they'd ever made, some of the best movies ever made."
"The Godfather being one of them.

The following post contains spoilers for "1883."
The Taylor Sheridan Western drama "Yellowstone" is still going strong, and in late 2021, the prequel series "1883" premiered. In the present day, the central Dutton family has the largest ranch in Montana. Almost a century and a half before that, however, the Duttons were part of a group of people heading to Oregon to start a new life. They crossed America in covered wagons, facing the dangers of the trail, bandits, weather, disease, and so much more. Americans who lived on the East coast weren't the only settlers of the American West, though. In fact, many of those pioneering and brave people weren't American at all.

There is a Taylor Sheridan aesthetic. The "Sicario" writer and "Yellowstone" creator is a poet laureate of the American West, a writer who reframes its ancient archetypes for modern audiences by placing emotion first. "Hell and High Water" sweepingly considers the folk hero power of modern-day outlaws. "Those Who Wish Me Dead" is a classic white-hat-vs.-black-hat yarn set in the daredevil world of smoke jumpers. Then, there's "Yellowstone." The Paramount+ smash is an unabashedly melodramatic soap opera, a dime-store novel for the small screen. Sheridan's show disguises its seedier impulses through grit and self-seriousness. The "Yellowstone" discourse has revolved around it being immensely popular yet widely unknown. So are dime-store novels. So are the works of Taylor Sheridan. It's all part of the plan.
If you love "Yellowstone" or any of its many genre elements, here are 16 shows you can watch next that range from neo-westerns to classic soaps.

One of the best shows to hit streaming recently is Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone spin-off, 1883. A one-and-done limited series, initially, the show was teased as something that would be ongoing, only for Sheridan to pull the rug out from under us in a finale that confirmed that the show’s story had reached its intended end. Instead of doing a second season, which he had never intended, the show will jump forward to depict another period of strife for the Dutton family in his upcoming series 1923, starring Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren.
That said, many of the Taylor Sheridan shows seem to exist in the same universe, and just because the saga of James (Tim McGraw) and Margaret Dutton (Faith Hill) maybe have ended, it doesn’t mean we won’t ever see them again. Painful snubs by the Television Academy have become an unfortunate fact of life, but the ongoing, across-the-board thumbs down for Yellowstone — not to mention the neglect for 1883 this year in the key acting categories — is particularly notable given the popularity of the two Taylor Sheridan dramas.

The latest Yellowstone prequel will actually be taking place a decade earlier than previously said. Paramount+ announced, as part of the streaming service celebrating its debut in the U.K. and Ireland, that Taylor Sheridan’s next installment in the hit franchise has been renamed to 1923 (formerly 1932). The next Yellowstone origin story stars Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford and, with the change, will account for the end of World War 1 (1918) and the start of Prohibition (1920), both of which will be woven into the story. It will premiere in December. 1923 is coming after 1883‘s one-season run on Paramount+, following Tim McGraw and Faith Hill’s James and Margaret Dutton, their daughter Elsa (Isabel May), and Shea Brennan (Sam Elliott), who led them on a journey west. The new limited series focuses on the Dutton family’s next two generations as they struggle to survive historic drought, lawlessness and prohibition, and an...

“I knew that this was a character I’d never seen in a western,” proclaims Lamonica Garrett about his role on the Paramount+ limited series “1883.” Garrett stars as Thomas, a former slave and army sergeant who helps guide a group of travellers from Texas to Oregon. Among the travelers is the Dutton family, who will eventually settle in Montana and create the ranch that is the setting for the popular drama “Yellowstone.” In our exclusive video interview (watch above) Garrett talks working with the show’s creator Taylor Sheridan and the potential impact the role could have on future westerns.
Garrett was initially attracted to the project because Thomas’ race is not at the forefront of the drama. The actor, who calls himself a fan of westerns, describes the impact of having a main character of color in a genre that isn’t known for racial diversity. “There are...

The cast of 1883 already miss their days on set of the Paramount+ drama, but make no mistake: the days and nights were brutal on the Yellowstone prequel.
Sam Elliott Apologizes For ‘Power Of The Dog’ Comments: “I Said Some Things That Hurt People And I Feel Terrible About That”
While promoting the series Sunday on a panel at Deadline’s Contenders TV event, star Tim McGraw talked about the lack of sleep and baths while shooting the limited series in Texas and Montana. From uber-producer Taylor Sheridan, the series follows James Dutton (McGraw) and his wife Margaret (Faith Hill) as they make the arduous journey from Texas to Montana. The cast also includes Isabel May as the Dutton’s only daughter Elsa, Sam Elliott as Civil War veteran-turned-wagon-train leader Shea Brennan, and Lamonica Garrett as Shea’s right-hand man Thomas.

Exclusive: Sam Elliott on Sunday apologized for the comments he made last month about the film The Power of the Dog on Marc Maron’s Wtf podcast and had a special message for Jane Campion, who won the Oscar for directing the Western drama starring Benedict Cumberbatch.
“I told the Wtf podcaster that I thought Jane Campion was a brilliant director, and I want to apologize to the cast of The Power of the Dog, brilliant actors all,” Elliott said. “And in particular Benedict Cumberbatch. I can only say that I’m sorry and I am. I am.”
While speaking during Deadline’s Contenders TV event Sunday to promote 1883 on Paramount+, Elliott began his mea culpa with a semi-serious warning. “First, don’t do a podcast with the call letters Wtf.” He then said the movie “struck a chord with me” and wanted to talk to Maron about “how I felt about the film.

Veteran actor Sam Elliott is back in the spotlight thanks to the massive popularity of the Paramount+ “Yellowstone” prequel “1883.” In the show, he plays former Civil War soldier Shea Brennan. To promote his work on the series as it likely heads into Emmy contention, Elliott recently appeared on Marc Maron’s “Wtf Podcast” for a typically gloves-off conversation — and seeing as Elliott is one of the western genre’s leading figures, he had harsh words to say about Jane Campion’s Best Picture nominee “The Power of the Dog.” Listen below.
“You want to talk about that piece of shit?” Elliott started out. “You didn’t like that one?” Maron asked.
“Fuck no. Why? I’ll tell you why I didn’t like it anyway,” Elliott said. “I looked at when I was down there in Texas doing ‘1883’ and what really brought it home to me the other day when I said,...

Over the years there have been movies and TV series examining the trials and tribulations of settlers traveling together on wagon trains hoping to find a new life in the West such as Raoul Walsh’s 193o widescreen “The Big Trail” starring a young John Wayne; John Ford’s 1950 “Wagon Master”; and the 1957—65 series “Wagon Train,” which hit No. 1 in the ratings. And now there’s Paramount +’s rugged, gritty and bloody “1883,” which debuted last December attracting 4.9 million viewers. The series, which concludes on Feb 25, has been renewed for a second season.

Just as “Yellowstone,” “1883” was created by Taylor Sheridan and follows Costner’s great-great grandfather James Dutton (McGraw) and great-great-grandmother Margaret (Hill) as they make the arduous,...

Spoiler Alert: This story contains details from Sunday’s Season 1 finale of Paramount+’s 1883.
Larry McMurtry was a literary inspiration for writer-director Taylor Sheridan, who took a page from the miniseries adaptation of that late author’s Lonesome Dove by scattering the harsh terrain with the bodies of its most beloved characters in the Paramount+ 101 Studios MTV Entertainment series. Sheridan’s 10-episode odyssey, about the push to Montana by the ancestors of Yellowstone‘s Dutton clan, saw the death of the show’s bright young narrator, Elsa Dutton (Isabel May), the grizzled Pinkerton agent Shea Brennan (Sam Elliott), and most of the European settlers who made the trip from Fort Worth, Texas in a ragtag wagon train caravan.

I have a new, non-romantic supercouple to root for, and that couple is 1883‘s Elsa Dutton and Capt. Shea Brennan.
The way Brennan tends to Elsa and her gnawing, gutting, all-consuming grief in this week’s hour is one of the best things I’ve seen on TV recently. It’s a subtle and lovely exchange between two characters who at first don’t seem to have much — if anything — in common. And it made me hope for more interactions between Sam Elliott’s and Isabel May’s characters.

Rita Wilson will appear as a helpful Doan’s Crossing storekeeper named Carolyn in an upcoming episode of Paramount+ series “1883,” TheWrap has confirmed.
According to Paramount+, Wilson will make a one-time appearance and help Faith Hill’s character “decompress with some whiskey punch.”
The news comes after Wilson’s husband, Tom Hanks, made a surprise appearance in Episode 2 as Union General George Meade in the series, which stars Hill and Tim McGraw as 19th century Western pioneers Margaret and James Dutton.
“1883” follows the Dutton family as they journey to Montana and establish the ranch that will eventually become the one run by Kevin Costner in “Yellowstone.” Both series were created by “Hell or High Water” Oscar-nominated screenwriter Taylor Sheridan.
The prequel premiered on Paramount+ and Paramount Network on Dec. 19, 2021 to an estimated 4.9 million viewers, making it the most-watched original series debut for the streamer.

Long before John Dutton ever presided over Yellowstone‘s titular ranch, his ancestor James Dutton risked everything to settle his family in the wilds of the American west. 1883, the Yellowstone prequel that premiered Sunday on Paramount+, is that Dutton’s story.

In an age of television where nothing is more attractive to networks than established I.P., it’s not enough to build a solidly performing drama on a humble plot of land. It’s all about the hydra-headed franchise these days, with even a series like “Law & Order” clawing back its territory following a decade of austerity measures. So it was only a matter of time before “Yellowstone,” Paramount Network’s superlatively popular nouveau Western, began manifest destiny.
The first such expansion comes in the form of “1883,” a far-flung prequel series focused on the forebears of John Dutton (Kevin Costner), the beleaguered cattle rancher at the center of “Yellowstone.” Decades before defending their massive Montana ranch from rapacious developers, they were settlers hoping for just enough luck and fortitude to survive the long journey west. The titular time period means hot-streak creator Taylor Sheridan going from a neo-Western to a proto-Western,...

The illustrious Sam Elliott has had so many incredible roles, but we've always associated him with the great American cowboy.
It should come as no surprise, then, that Sam's presence in 1883 works like a charm, offering him a profoundly nuanced character in Shea Brennan, scoring him one of his best performances.
Please enjoy segments of reporters' conversations with Sam during 1883 press day, and tune in to the new series on Paramount+ tomorrow, Sunday, December 19.

What was it like working with Tim and Faith, who've never acted together before?
Yeah. You know, I think there was a certain contingent of people that thought, hmm, these country-western singers, now they're going to be actors. Well, they pulled it off; that's how I feel about it. And I think they're both incredible in it. And I think they've gotten more incredible with every episode.

Epic. That’s the only way to describe creator and executive producer Taylor Sheridan’s prequel to his smash-hit contemporary Western Yellowstone, which stars Kevin Costner as John Dutton, the patriarch of a wealthy cattle ranching family. The supersized story of 1883 chronicles the dynasty’s humble beginnings: their ancestors’ arduous journey, along with a wagon train of others, from Fort Worth, Texas, to the wilds of Montana, in hopes of a fresh start. “There are more moving parts to this than I’ve seen in my entire 54-year career,” says Academy Award nominee Sam Elliott, who plays Shea Brennan, a haunted Civil War vet turned tough cowboy and wagon train guide. “In every episode,” he continues, “there’s one more hurdle: famine, thieves, natural disasters, crossing rivers and mountains.” Paramount+ And interpersonal clashes. Brennan butts heads with 19th-century pioneer and wagon train participant James Dutton—the great-grandfather of Costner’s...

At first glance, Yellowstone didn’t have the makings of a major TV hit.
By the time Yellowstone premiered in 2018, its creator Taylor Sheridan didn’t have much name recognition beyond action movie die-hards. The show’s name was generic and certainly not search engine friendly. And its home on Paramount Network? One could be forgiven for not knowing where that was in their cable package.
And yet, Yellowstone did become a TV heavy hitter, arguably one of the biggest ones on television. Its ratings are absolutely massive, with the season 4 premiere pulling in a mind-boggling 14 million viewers before streaming was even factored in. Those are the type of Neilsen numbers you just don’t see anymore. Why did Yellowstone buck every possible roadblock trending against it to become TV royalty?
For starters, it’s good. That’s always important. But there’s another factor one can’t overlook: the Kevin Costner factor.

By just about any metric, Paramount Network drama Yellowstone is one of the most popular shows on television.
Created by actor-turned-filmmaker Taylor Sheridan and starring Kevin Costner, Yellowstone boasts some truly eye-popping viewership numbers. Though the show was a hit right out of the gate, it’s reached new heights in its fourth season. The season 4 premiere drew in 12.7 million viewers in the Nielsen Ratings Live+3 metric. That made it the most-watched premiere on cable since The Walking Dead in 2017.
Naturally, a show this successful almost has to become a franchise and introduce at least one spinoff. Well, that’s exactly what Paramount has done here. After signing a second major deal with Sheridan, Paramount will bring a Yellowstone prequel called 1883 to its streaming service Paramount+. As its name implies, 1883 will take place in the 19th century and document the expanding American frontier. Not only that but it...
