Russian documentary filmmaker Vitaly Mansky doesn’t keep things off the record, he said during his masterclass at Ji.hlava Intl. Documentary Festival. Celebrated with a tribute section featuring “Under the Sun,” “Putin’s Witnesses” and his latest doc “Gorbachev. Heaven,” Mansky has already outlined his methods in his 2005 manifesto “Real Cinema,” including the fact that directors shouldn’t abide by any “moral” restrictions.
“Once you agree to be filmed, you lose your right to say things off the record. I am not here to have a chat about your life, I am here to record and then it’s up to me whether I will keep it or not. Otherwise, I would lose my freedom,” he said, admitting that Gorbachev, former leader of the Soviet Union, accepted his rules.

President Donald Trump is exploiting the media’s love of photo ops to fool America into thinking he is making any kind of meaningful progress on North Korea. Today, after extending a last-minute invitation via Twitter, he met North Korean leader Kim Jong-un at the border between North and South Korea where the two leaders shook hands, and Trump greeted Kim as “my friend” (after all, the two are now pen pals). Trump then stepped across the border into North Korea, becoming the first sitting president to do so.

A report Kim Jong Un demanded from the U.S. and President Donald Trump approved $2M for hospitalization costs of Otto Warmbier weighed on Trump Friday morning. He took to Twitter:
No money was paid to North Korea for Otto Warmbier, not two Million dollars, not anything else. This is not the Obama Administration that paid 1.8 Billion Dollars for four hostages, or gave five terrorist hostages plus, who soon went back to battle, for traitor Sgt. Bergdah!
and….
“President Donald J. Trump is the greatest hostage negotiator that I know of in the history of the United States. 20 hostages, many in impossible circumstances, have been released in last two years! No money was paid.” Cheif Hostage Negotiator, USA!
“Cheif’ shot up to top-trending worldwide on Twitter, wiith most responders agreeing the position of “Cheif Hostage Negotiator, USA!” doesn’t actually exist, though others speculated the post might be held by John Barron,...

President Trump’s vaunted negotiating prowess hasn’t been able to yield much from North Korea. Not only has the dictatorship failed to denuclearize, it reportedly wouldn’t agree to give up Otto Warmbier without the promise of a ransom.
On Thursday, the Washington Post revealed that North Korea billed the United States $2 million for the care of Otto Warmbier, the hostage who died shortly after he was returned in June 2017. North Korea — which detained Warmbier, then a 21-year-old University of Virginia student, in January 2016 — demanded the U.S. sign...

Updated with video. Bill Maher welcomed Conservative Union chairman Matt Schlapp, fresh off presiding over the annual Cpac confab, “into the lion’s den” of Real Time.
Over the first few minutes of the segment, he peppered Schlapp with questions about how he has stayed loyal to Trump despite repeated tests of his faith, a number of which Maher ran by Schlapp. There was Trump’s failure to secure money for a border wall; unsuccessful diplomatic talks with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un; and decision to give his kids and son-in-law Jared Kushner security clearances over the objections of the CIA and FBI.
On the border wall, Schlapp countered, “Call it what you will — a fence, a barrier, a wall. It’s being built.” On Trump’s siding with Kim, who claimed he knew nothing about the treatment of Otto Warmbier, an Ohioan who died after being beaten while...

Updated with Donald Trump response: President Donald Trump tried to tweet his way out of the corner into which he painted himself when he said he does not hold Kim Jong Un responsible for Otto Warmbier’s death, taking the North Korean ruler at his word that he did not know what was happening to the college student.
If you guessed Trump tried to turn the conversation to Barack Obama, go to the head of the class.
“I never like being misinterpreted, but especially when it comes to Otto Warmbier and his great family. I got Otto out along with three others. The previous Administration did nothing, and he was taken on their watch. Of course I hold North Korea responsible for Otto’s mistreatment and death.”

President Trump’s second meeting with Kim Jong-un didn’t go quite as smoothly as it did when they first met Singapore last June. The two leaders failed to reach a denuclearization deal after convening in Hanoi, Vietnam on Thursday, prompting Trump to leave the summit ahead of schedule. “Sometimes you have to walk and I think that was one of these times,” Trump said at a press conference before boarding Air Force One.

Donald Trump Talks “Talented” Kim Jong-Un & New North Korea “Bond”: “Adversaries Can Become Friends”
Donald Trump took questions from global media during a surreal, 60-minute media session after his meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un in Singapore.
Here are some of the key comments from his session:
“We’ve had a tremendous 24 hours, a tremendous three months actually,” Trump said. “My meeting with Chairman Kim was honest, direct and productive.” Trump said Kim is “already destroying a major missile site”. This detail was not in their joint declaration because the two leaders agreed it after the document was signed, he said. “We can replace the horrors of battle with the blessings of peace,” Trump continued. “There’s no limit to what North Korea can achieve when it gives up its nuclear weapons,” he said. “Anyone can make war, but only the most courageous can make peace.” The President also added that without Otto Warmbier “this wouldn’t have happened”. Otto Warmbier was the...

President Trump dangled an invitation to North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un to the U.S. at a White House presser today to talk about next week’s Singapore summit.
Asked if that means an invitation to the White House or Mar-a-Lago, Trump, standing with Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, smiled and answered “maybe we will start with the White House.”
If things go well at the summer, Trump said he could sign an agreement to end the Korean War after all these years, saying “that’s the easy part.”
But, he said, current sanctions will not be lifted until they have an agreement to de-nuke North Korea. Trump boasted he has lots more North Korea sanctions up his sleeve, which he also can whip out if the talks to not go well. He informed Rose Garden Reporters, and viewers watching the televised presse, that he has stopped using...

“Fox & Friends” offered a charitable assessment of Kim Jong Un on Wednesday, suggesting that the reclusive North Korean dictator probably didn’t really like all the killing that came along with his job.
“The guy who wants to meet with Dennis Rodman and loves NBA basketball and loves western pop culture probably doesn’t love being the guy that has to murder his people all day long,” said co-host Pete Hegseth. “…Probably wants some normalization,” he added.
Hegseth — who was briefly considered to lead the Department of Veterans Affairs earlier this year — made the observation in response to a question from fellow co-host Ainsley Earhardt about why Kim was seeking a meeting.
“I think he wants a picture with the American president,” said Hegseth continuing his insights.

President Donald Trump tweeted this morning the three remaining American citizens held captive in North Korea have been freed and are flying back to the United States with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. The release is being billed a a goodwill gesture by North Korea in advance of ruler Kim Jong Un’s meeting with Trump.
“I am pleased to inform you that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is in the air and on his way back from North Korea with the 3 wonderful gentlemen that everyone is so looking forward to meeting,” Trump tweeted. “They seem to be in good health. Also, good meeting with Kim Jong Un. Date & Place set.”
Trump then tweeted that Pompeo and his “guests” will be landing at Andrew Air Force Base at “2 A.M. in the morning” and that he would be there to greet them. “Very exciting!” Trump beamed.

Rachel Maddow took a dark message from Donald Trump’s first State of the Union address, saying the whole affair left her with a feeling that the president was itching for armed conflict with North Korea. “He wants a war with North Korea if you take him by what he says,” said Maddow during MSNBC’s State of the Union snap analysis. “It’s no departure from how he’s been for the last eight months toward North Korea.” In his speech, Trump blasted the rogue nation, inviting both a regime dissident and the parents of American student Otto Warmbier to watch the speech as...

Jimmy Kimmel took some shots at President Donald Trump on Tuesday evening, mocking his first state of the union address with a number of cutting barbs. “Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi spent the whole speech looking like they ate a bag of expired batteries,” said Kimmel remarking on their dour expressions. “As is always the case, there were a lot of standing ovations. There were more forced applause than a Kim Jong Un birthday parade at this thing tonight.” Interesting context: the parents of Otto Warmbier, the American college student who was arrested while visiting North Korea and later died as a...
