Robert Dalton Smith was born in Nottingham, England to Andrea and Michael Smith.
He attended Henry Mellish Comprehensive School which was to be the setting for Exam Conditions (1992), a short TV film where he was cast as an extra. Shortly after filming in September 1991, he started a media studies course at South Notts College in Clifton, Nottingham where he studied video, radio, journalism and marketing. A year after completing the course in 1994 he got his first break in radio working at 96 Trent FM as a producer and occasional presenter.
In 1997 he moved to Gloucester to become the breakfast producer at Severn Sound FM. He was soon presenting the drive show and then moved to the evening show called "The Hot 30 Countdown". During his time at Severn Sound he appeared as a guest judge on Challenge TV's Karaoke Challenge (2000).
In 1998 The GWR Group decided to network the local evening shows and Rob moved to Bristol to co-host the show with Mel Everett where it was re-branded "Mel & Rob's Hot 30 Countdown", broadcast across 33 UK radio stations. The show ran from December 1998 to December 2001 and Mel and Rob were lucky enough to interview many celebrities such as Robbie Williams, Diana Ross, Noel Gallagher, Britney Spears, Pink and many more.
In February 2002 Rob moved to work at Bournemouth radio station 2CR FM where he stayed till June 2010 (the station re-branded to Heart in 2009). Since then he has been running a production company called Studio 2 Media Ltd.
