A striking film that evokes a wave of emotions, Natalie Rae and Angela Patton’s Daughters is another picture––à la Rudy Valdez’s The Sentence, Garrett Bradley’s Time, and Zara Katz and Lisa Riordan Seville’s A Women on the Outside––focusing directly on the impact prison sentences have on families. All three films discuss the direct and indirect costs of keeping in touch with loved ones “inside,” from visiting far-flung facilities across the state or country to the exorbitant rates charged by companies (e.g. Secures Technologies) for video visits and emails. Daughters is an oft-poetic look at the impact this separation has on four girls, ages five to 15: Aubrey, Santana, Ja’Anna, and Raziah.

The Scene 2 Seen podcast is back to regularly scheduled programming–publishing episodes on the first, second, and third Tuesday of the month unless otherwise specified.
On this episode, I discuss documentary, A Woman on the Outside. The film premiered at SXSW in March 2022, won Best Documentary Feature at the American Black Film Festival, and won Best North American Documentary Feature at the Mammoth Lakes Film Festival.
Filmed over more than four years, the story follows Kristal Bush, a young Philadelphia woman who saw nearly every man in her life disappear to prison. She goes out on the road, driving for her van service, which takes families to visit their incarcerated loved ones in prisons hundreds of miles from the city. She lives that life too – her father has been locked up most of her life, her middle brother has been in prison more than a decade, and her oldest brother...

Chicago – Of all the films of the recent 2022 SXSW Festival, one documentary stood out as a profile of empathy. Co-directors Zara Katz and Lisa Riordan Seville presented “A Woman on the Outside,” an overview of a Philadelphia activist who advocates for prison reform while actually having – within her own story – three male family members in and out of incarceration.
After watching the men in her life disappear to prison, Kristal Bush channeled that struggle into starting her prison van service (Bridging the Gap), which keeps families together by driving loved ones to often faraway prisons. But when her father and brother return to Philadelphia after decades behind bars, Kristal has to figure out what it means to her and her family “on the outside” … including her mother Crystal and her nephew Nyvae, who she wants to adopt.

SXSW is still on-going with the music portion at the center of attention, but the films at this years festival were unforgettable. Because SXSW champions independent cinema, it gives move lovers like me the chance to discover movies I wouldn’t have heard of outside of traveling to Austin. Below I provide some quick cut capsule reviews for Aftershock, Woman on the Outside, Slash/Back, and Bitch Ass, which are a few of the films that made an impression on me. Be sure to put these on your radar!
Aftershock
Directors and producers Paula Eiselt and Tonya Lewis Lee’s documentary Aftershock chronicles life in the aftermath of the skyrocketing maternal deaths among Black women in the United States. Black maternal death includes numerous factors regarding race, sex, income, and preventable. Shamony Gibson and Amber Rose Issacs are two Black women with tragic backstories as both women died from medical negligence in hospitals.

When a family member is sentenced to prison it’s often their family that “does the time”—having one less mother, father, brother, sister to raise a child. This isn’t to say a sentence isn’t ever deserved, even if the justice system is far more punitive and destructive than need be, placing incarcerated individuals from the city in far-flung rural places and bringing them back into the system for minor parole violations that could be dealt with a warning rather than six more months. This is where young entrepreneur Krystal Bush, daughter and sister of two justice-impacted individuals, comes in: staring a van service, Bridging the Gap, to drive families to see their loved ones hundreds of miles from her home in Philadelphia.
The service becomes a family affair with mother “Big Krystal” driving a second van while also preparing for son Jarvae’s release from the city prison after 11 years.
