Batwoman season 2 will feature yet another iconic villain from Batman’s rogues gallery. It’s been clear from the references in the first run that crime boss Safiyah (who’ll be played by Shivaani Ghai) will be the big bad of the next outing of the Arrowverse series, but now EP Caroline Dries has dropped the bombshell that we can expect another main antagonist to arrive later in the season – none other than Roman Sionis Aka Black Mask.
The showrunner revealed the news to EW, ahead of the premiere this weekend. As well as the Safiyah plotline, new heroine Ryan Wilder will battle the False Face Society, too, Black Mask’s outfit from the comics, which will tighten “its grip on Gotham distributing a perilous new drug known as Snakebite.”
“We have a couple big bads this season,” Dries explained. “One, [who] we teed up midway through last season, is this woman Safiyah,...

Of all the returning crop of CW shows, the most closely scrutinized will be Batwoman, which suffered a major blow with the departure of Ruby Rose’s eponymous vigilante. Now, a fresh trailer for season 2 gives us a look at the next heroine to don the cowl of the Scarlet Knight, as well as a brief taste of what we can expect from the series.
Having Alice describe ‘new girl’ Ryan as a “handful” suggests that she won’t just be a carbon copy of Kate, but someone different enough that the character is initially unsure how to deal with her, which will hopefully balance out feeling short-changed at the lack of resolution of the enmity between the sister enemies. Meanwhile, when it comes to the Batmobile, instead of the full black number that various media have portrayed it as for years, it gets the addition of some red accents...

Javicia Leslie has given us a fresh behind-the-scenes look at her costume for the upcoming second season of Batwoman. Following Ruby Rose bowing out of the Batcave, there will be a new Scarlet Knight protecting Gotham City when The CW show returns, with Leslie – previously best known for God Friended Me, also produced by Arrowverse chief Greg Berlanti – playing Ryan Wilder.
Fans are eager to see this new heroine in action, with each little scrap of set footage proving exciting, and during WarnerMedia’s virtual presentation at Ccxp last weekend, we got another glimpse of the actress in the Batsuit. As shared by Geeks of Color on Twitter, the clip sees the star discussing her threads as a costume designer applies the finishing touches. The whole suit is on show, too, except for the red wig and cowl.

Batwoman's Plan to Not Simply Recast Kate But Introduce a New Lead Character Has More Cons Than Pros

Batwoman‘s plan to not recast Ruby Rose’s Kate Kane but instead introduce a brand-new lead heroine seems to create more problems than it solves. So… why do it?
When it was first announced that Rose and the CW series were abruptly parting ways, a joint statement from the production studios said they were “firmly committed to Batwoman’s … long-term future” via “the casting of a new lead actress and member of the Lgbtq community.” Though in hindsight we now can parse words and see that recasting the role of Kate was never outright stated as the plan, that...

Former Batwoman star Ruby Rose has taken to social media to thank fans for their support… and to hint at why she and the show parted ways in the first place.
In an Instagram post on Wednesday, accompanied by a fan-made video, Rose — who announced her split from the CW superhero drama last week — said: “Thank you everyone for coming on this journey. If I mentioned everyone it would be 1000 tags… but Thank you to the cast, crew, producers and studio.” She added that “it wasn’t an easy decision but those who know, know. I didn’t want to...

The star of Batwoman will have a new face when Season 2 rolls around. But will Kate Kane herself? Is there any way — or any reason — for the Arrowverse series to write in the change of appearance?
Let me state up front, before we blow past the 280-character attention span, that I am Not an advocate for writing it into a show when a role gets recast. Ignore it, I say, or make a wink-wink nod to it via some second banana’s throwaway line. (“You seem… different … today, Laramie.”) I spent a whole day last week compiling/researching dozens of past TV recasts,...

As Arrow ended, another Arrowverse show rose up to take its place. The Emerald Archer’s series completed its eight-season run this year, with Batwoman debuting around the same time. For producer Marc Guggenheim, this isn’t a coincidence as he thinks that the Crimson Crusader is symbolically replacing Oliver Queen as the resident grim and gritty hero in The CW’s DC TV universe.
During a podcast with Comic Book Central recorded back in January, shortly after Arrow concluded, Guggenheim revealed that it struck him during Batwoman’s very first appearance in 2018’s “Elseworlds” crossover event that Kate Kane was essentially filling the Green Arrow’s role in the Arrowverse. As he put it, in colorful terms:
“After we did ‘Elseworlds,’ I said to the powers that be, ‘I feel like I just introduced my wife to her new boyfriend,’ because in many ways, Batwoman is carrying on the...

Ruby Rose wanted off Batwoman — and no one was going to stand in her way.
Although the actress’ sudden, surprising departure from The CW superhero drama after just one season was framed on Tuesday as her choice and her choice alone, sources confirm to TVLine that the split was — at best — a mutual one.
