Exclusive: New Amsterdam fans who were left wanting more when the NBC series concluded its run after 5 seasons last year, may have something new to look forward to.
Series creator, executive producer and showrunner David Schulner is developing a spinoff series at NBC set 30 years after the events of the original series. Tentatively titled New Amsterdam: Tomorrow, it follows Dr. Max Goodwin’s (Ryan Eggold) daughter, Luna Goodwin, who steps into her father’s role as Medical Director of New Amsterdam Hospital.
The potential sequel, which is expected to explore the ways artificial intelligence would help advance the medical industry in the future, was set up in the New Amsterdam series finale. It introduced a young and enthusiastic new medical director, played by Molly Griggs, at the beginning of the episode who was revealed at the end to be Max’s daughter, Luna Goodwin, as an adult in flash-forwards.

We have the first member of the fall 2018 freshman class to get a back order. NBC has picked up an additional 9 episodes of new drama series New Amsterdam, bringing the full-season order to 22 episodes.
The news came after another solid ratings showing for the rookie last night. New Amsterdam, from NBC sibling Universal TV, is one of two hot newcomers at NBC this fall. There is no back order news yet for the other, Manifest, produced by Warner Bros. TV. Likely part of the delay has to do with the heavily serialized nature of Manifest, which often leads to limited season orders. New Amsterdam is a medical procedural, making a 22-episode season easier t pull off.
New Amsterdam has averaged a 1.6 rating in adults 18-49 and 7.6 million viewers overall in Live+Same day ratings and ranks as the #2 new series behind only NBC’s Manifest New Amsterdam has dominated its Tuesday 10 Pm hour,...

“New Amsterdam,” like the mammoth hospital it’s set in, has a whole lot of enthusiasm and too many areas in which to direct it. Based on Dr. Eric Manheimer’s book on New York City’s Bellevue Hospital (“Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital”), NBC’s new medical drama paints a simultaneously promising, bleak, and (unintentionally) absurd picture of how a public hospital built on good intentions went awry. As Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold) tells a roomful of skeptical employees on his first day as their latest medical director, the hospital needs to find its way back to patient care after taking advantage of its celebrity status for too long.
This isn’t necessarily a bad way into a TV show. The problem is that no matter how many side characters and plots the series adds into the mix — and it adds a lot — the doctor who...

Given that virtually all dramas, especially on network television, revolve around cops or doctors, it isn’t surprising that they are as beholden to the “gimmick plot” as sit-coms. They generally nail things down as simply a quirk of the main character, but even that simplicity is falling away as ideas run dry. Worst of all, many of them only care so much about gimmicks or plot setups, because they’re lazy spins through melodrama. New Amsterdam is a show that looks to run so hard at a gimmick that it bursts beyond some form of event horizon and comes full circle to not having a gimmick at all. What if our doctor’s quirk was… wait for it, that he wanted to be a good doctor? And, what if our gimmick was that no one else could figure out what the hell he was talking about, and everyone at...

“Abby’s”
From the producers of “The Good Place” comes a hilariously aspirational new comedy about the best bar in San Diego, home to good prices, great company and, of course, Abby. This unlicensed, makeshift bar nestled in her backyard is the opposite of everything annoying about today’s party scene. There are rules at Abby’s: no cell phones (not even to “look something up”), earning a seat at the bar takes time and losing a challenge means drinking a limey, sugary “not-beer” drink. As the oddball cast of regulars will tell you, hanging out at Abby’s is a coveted honor. But once you’re in, you’re family.
The cast includes Natalie Morales, Nelson Franklin, Kimia Behpoornia, Jessica Chaffin, Leonard Ouzts and Neil Flynn.
Josh Malmuth will write and executive produce. Pamela Fryman will direct and executive produce the pilot. Michael Schur and David Miner also executive produce.

“Manifest”
When Montego Air Flight 828 landed safely after a turbulent but routine flight, the crew and passengers were relieved. Now, faced with the impossible, they’re all given a second chance. But as their new realities become clear, a deeper mystery unfolds and some of the returned passengers soon realize they may be meant for something greater than they ever thought possible. How can he help? Well, the doctors and staff have heard this before. Not taking “no” for an answer, Dr. Goodwin must disrupt the status quo and prove he will stop at nothing to breathe new life into this understaffed, underfunded and underappreciated hospital — the only one in the world capable of treating Ebola patients, prisoners from Rikers and the President of the United States under one roof — and return it to the glory that put it on the map.

Emet is the perfect mom, boss, wife, friend and daughter. Ok, she’s not perfect. In fact, she’s just figuring it out like the rest of us. Sure, she feels bad when she has a sexy dream about someone other than her husband, or when she pretends not to know her kids when they misbehave in public, or when she uses her staff to help solve personal problems. But that’s Ok, right? Nobody can have it all and do it perfectly. From executive producer Amy Poehler comes a modern comedy about being perfectly Ok with being imperfect.
The cast includes Sarayu Blue, Paul Adelstein, Aisling Bea, Zach Cherry, Johnny Pemberton and James Buckley.

When it comes to intense dramas set in hospitals, is it possible to over-prescribe? Maybe, but we’re not there yet, at least judging from the upcoming television season.
There are currently five such shows airing on the Big 4 networks, and last Friday NBC announced it’s adding a new hospital wing in the 2018-2019 TV schedule, picking up the Ryan Eggold-led pilot “New Amsterdam” to series.
Per the logline, the medical drama “inspired by Bellevue, the oldest public hospital in America” focuses on “the brilliant and charming Dr. Max Goodwin,” who we’re told “sets out to tear up the bureaucracy and provide exceptional care,” won’t be “taking ‘no’ for an answer,” will “disrupt the status quo” and “stop at nothing to breathe new life” into the storied institution. Which is, by the way, “the only one in the world capable of treating Ebola patients, prisoners from Rikers and the President of the United States under one roof.”

If this synopsis sounds familiar, it’s because you’ve read many of these adjectives before in descriptions of, oh, every other medical drama on broadcast television.
At this moment, NBC is also home to “Chicago Med,” ABC touts “The Good Doctor” and “Grey’s Anatomy,” Fox has “The Resident,” and CBS houses “Code Black.” That means if all of them get renewed (and most of them have been already) “New Amsterdam” will bring us to an even half dozen medical drams overall.
So why did the network feel the need to order up 10 cc’s of another medical drama Stat? Well, that’s a good question, as the Nielsen numbers for this genre are all over the place, meaning it could either become a hit, provide the network with steady mid-range ratings, or tread water each week.
Also Read: 'Grey's Anatomy' Renewed for Season 15 at ABC
According to the most current season averages from Nielsen, “Chicago Med” is pulling in a 2.0 rating in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic, with “Grey’s Anatomy” scoring a 3.2, “The Good Doctor” earning a 3.4, “The Resident” posting a 1.7, and “Code Black” managing a 0.7, according to Nielsen. (That last one is not based on live + seven days of delayed viewing like the others, as the CBS series just returned for its third season two weeks ago.)
That means overall, “The Good Doctor” is currently the No. 9 show on broadcast, “Grey’s Anatomy” is 11, “Chicago Med” ties for 27th, “The Resident” ties for 42nd, and “Code Black” is ties at 138th. So, it’s not a completely safe bet, but in general it is a solid return on investment for most networks, which is why they are continuing to invest in the ones they have.
“Grey’s” was recently given a 15th season (after star Ellen Pompeo was bumped to a $20 million a year salary), while freshmen series “The Good Doctor” and “The Resident” were each granted a Season 2, and “Chicago Med” was just handed a fourth. The fate of “Code Black” has yet to be decided, though it is probably on the bubble once more.
Keeping in mind the ratings and renewal status of its soon-to-be competitors, what is going to make “New Amsterdam” standout in a sea of shows set in a hospital? A speciality — something all the doc-centric shows with a good prognosis have.
Also Read: Ratings: ABC's 'The Good Doctor' Grows Viewership in Freshman Season Finale
Shondaland’s “Grey’s” gives viewers their weekly dose of relationship drama among characters they’ve grown attached to for over a decade. “The Good Doctor” has Freddie Highmore playing an autistic doctor, something new there. The Resident,” as star Matt Czuchry told TheWrap in January, could be ‘The Shield” of the genre. “Chicago Med” is a Dick Wolf show, so it’s like “Law & Order,” but for hospitals. And “Code Black” focuses on the nation’s busiest ER.
Chances are it’s that Bellevue angle that NBC thinks will drive viewers mad for “New Amsterdam.” But only time, and fall ratings, will tell.
Aside from Eggold, the drama stars Freema Agyeman, Janet Montgomery, Jocko Sims, Anupam Kher and Tyler Labine.
David Schulner will write and executive produce the series from Universal Television, Pico Creek Productions and Mount Moriah, with Kate Dennis directing and executive producing the pilot. Peter Horton also executive produces, with Dr. Eric Manheimer grabbing a producing credit.

Women and crime? They mix well.
Christina Hendrix, Rhetta, and Mae Whitman star in Good Girls, the sometimes crazy, sometimes touching series about women who needed a little help, so they took to crime to get their families through the tough times.
They soon discovered it wouldn't be a quick and easy fix, and the show was off and running. Fans wouldn't have been pleased without more from the endearing and funny ladies, and NBC has granted them more time to find a way out of their sticky wicket with Good Girls Season 2.
While the drama found stiff competition against ABC's The Good Doctor, once the medical series signed off for the season, Good Girls was either in front of or tied with the competition for the rest of its premiere season.
Fans, though, quickly fell for the women at the end of their financial ropes and didn't even...

NBC has given out the first series order from its pilot crop for the 2018-2019 season.
The medical drama “New Amsterdam” has been ordered at the broadcaster. Inspired by Bellevue, the oldest public hospital in America, the series follows the brilliant and charming Dr. Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold), the institution’s newest medical director who sets out to tear up the bureaucracy and provide exceptional care. Dr.
In addition to Eggold, the cast of the series also includes Freema Agyeman, Janet Montgomery, Jocko Sims, Anupam Kher and Tyler Labine. David Schulner...

We have the first official pilot-to-series order this upfront season. NBC, the first network to present its fall schedule on May 14, has picked up its medical drama New Amsterdam (fka Bellevue), which comes from sister studio Universal TV.
NBC has yet to renew the bulk of its current drama series, including all four Dick Wolf shows. The youngest of them is medical drama Chicago Med, now in its third season. New Amsterdam’s pickup brings up questions whether it might take Chicago Med’s spot as NBC’s flagship medical drama, though the network has had multiple medical series at the same time before, including Chicago Med and The Night Shift, the latter of which never had a full-season September-May run.
Traditionally, the networks first pick up the new series they are considering for the fall schedule, so if New Amsterdam launches in the fall, Chicago Med could be a...
