Schell brings with him a list of clients that includes Tom Hanada (Motherland: Fort Salem), Jess Carson (The Flash), Meredith Kecskemety (The Legend of Vox Machina), Alyssa & Griffin Devine (Portals), Todd Stephens (Swan Song) and Addison Heimann (Hypochondriac). When Midland announced that they would be playing a one-off show at the Palomino in October 2019, the North Hollywood venue hadn’t been operational for nearly 25 years. Though the original structure is still standing, the former country-music hot spot on Lankershim Boulevard now serves as a rentable banquet space for birthday parties and quinceañeras.
“They essentially moved a honky-tonk into that building, which is as un-honky-tonk as you get,” says Midland guitarist-vocalist Jess Carson, joined by singer Mark Wystrach and bassist-vocalist Cameron Duddy a few months later at their label’s Nashville offices.

The members of Midland aren’t ones to hold their tongues, and now they have a new platform to let it rip. On Wednesday, the country trio of Mark Wystrach, Cameron Duddy and Jess Carson premiered the first episode of their country music podcast Set It Straight on Spotify.
Set It Straight seeks to answer some of country’s burning questions, kicking off with a deep dive into the circumstances surrounding the theft of cosmic-country pioneer Gram Parsons’ body. The episode includes an interview with Phil Kaufman, Parsons’ road manager...

Midland sang one for the music-making ramblers on Tuesday’s episode of Late Night With Seth Meyers, where they performed “Playboys.” The song originally appears on the country trio’s 2019 album Let It Roll.
With their uniquely flamboyant sense of style, Mark Wystrach, Cameron Duddy (who skips his shirt buttons entirely for this appearance) and Jess Carson put a little bit of outlaw bounce into “Playboys,” which they wrote with Shane McAnally and Josh Osborne. And the seemingly untethered, road-romanticizing life of the outlaw country greats is something to be...

Jess carson, Cameron Duddy, and Mark Wystrach, a.k.a. Midland, are arguing about L.A. traffic. “You should take La Brea over to Sunset,” Duddy, the band’s bassist, says from the back seat of a fire-engine-red Jeep Gladiator Rubicon.
“No, not La Brea,” says lead singer Wystrach, who’s driving. “We want La Cienega — or, no, Crescent Heights.”
All three guys currently call Austin home, but they used to live in L.A. So the drive up into the Hollywood Hills is also a trip down memory lane...

“Anyone have a Triple A card?” asks Midland’s Mark Wystrach, climbing into the middle row of a Pepto-Bismol-colored vintage Cadillac limo that’s currently parked outside of a hip East Nashville bed and breakfast called, appropriately, Urban Cowboy. Though it looks impossibly cool, the interior of this thing is more aging New York taxicab than luxury vehicle — the circulation is minimal, the seats shellac themselves to thighs like athletic tape, and it may or may not emit borderline lethal amounts of exhaust. And it’s hot. So hot. The tiny,...

Country trio Midland sparked a lot of unnecessarily heated debates back when they first arrived back in 2017. Their throwback aesthetic and sound — a playful, scuffed-up nod to the oft-derided Urban Cowboy era in country and its characteristic softness — drew suspicion from anyone who shaped their idea of masculinity around Waylon or Willie. Then there was the fact that singer Mark Wystrach’s résumé included acting and underwear modeling, while bassist Cameron Duddy had pop superstar connections as the video director for Bruno Mars’ “Locked Out of Heaven” and “Uptown Funk.

Midland performed their current single “Mr. Lonely” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Wednesday night, owning the late-night stage with a mix of sartorial flash, choreographed dance moves, and impromptu hat tosses.
From afar, it looked as if the trio couldn’t agree on what to wear, as guitarist Jess Carson and bassist Cameron Duddy both sported suits and cowboy hats, while lead singer Mark Wystrach decided sleeves were apparently too cumbersome for late-night and opted for a tank top. Midland tapped into the dreamy vibe of Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game” with their atmospheric new song “Put the Hurt on Me.” The country trio follows Isaak’s lead with the music video too, setting the tune to a stark black–and-white video (though theirs doesn’t feature Helena Christensen on a beach).

Gary Busey will play God in new pop-rock musical Only Human opening Off Broadway this fall, producers announced today.
The musical, with a book by Jess Carson, music and lyrics by Mike Squillante and based on a story by Jesse Murphy and Squillante, will have its world premiere at Off Broadway’s Theatre at St. Clements. Previews begin October 8, with an opening night on October 21. The limited engagement runs through January 5, 2020.
“God is everything love is, and that love becomes the beginning of blessings and miracles,” Busey said in a statement. “Playing this role of God is easy because I’m not acting, I’m just believing. You come see it and you’ll believe it too.”
Busey did a two-week stint in Off Broadway’s murder mystery Perfect Crime in 2016, but Only Human will mark his first musical.
The production will be choreographed by Josue Jasmin and directed by NJ Agwuna.

Gary Busey, an award-winning actor whose inimitable ramblings could be construed as gospel, will play the role of God in an upcoming Off-Broadway musical.
In Only Human, Busey will play “the Boss,” as he’s referred to in the musical, which put a clever spin on a biblical tale.

Midland held court at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium on Sunday night, delivering a headlining set full of hits like “Drinkin’ Problem” and “Burn Out,” new songs off their upcoming second album and a slew of bar-band covers. That the gig also fell on Cinco de Mayo only made it that much more of a party. Here are five reasons you should have been there.
1. Midland’s New Material
If the new songs that Midland debuted on Sunday night are any indication, the trio is doubling down on making Eagles country-rock cool again.

Midland chronicle the misadventures of “Mr. Lonely,” played to the comedic hilt by Dennis Quaid, in their riotous new video. The track is the first single from the trio’s upcoming album.
Embracing the titular character’s greasy charm and penchant for philandering, Quaid leaves one stranger’s bed in search of the next. He saunters into a bar — Midland members Mark Wystrach, Cameron Duddy and Jess Carson are there setting up their gear as “Drinkin’ Problem” pours from the jukebox — with the collar popped on his denim jacket, scanning the room.

Brooks & Dunn and Midland brought their collaboration for B&D’s new album Reboot to life when they teamed up to perform “Boot Scootin’ Boogie” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday night.
Midland singer Mark Wystrach set the scene with the song’s famous opening lyric — “Out in the country, past the city limits sign” — before Ronnie Dunn and his honeyed voice joined in. His partner of nearly 30 years Kix Brooks laid down some rootsy harmonica, while Midland’s Jess Carson and Cameron Daddy chimed in on background vocals.

Since releasing their debut album On the Rocks in 2017, Midland have made their home on the road, supporting the LP on tours with Little Big Town and Thomas Rhett and with their own headlining sets. The latter gigs are typically raucous affairs, with the band playing the majority of On the Rocks and firing off a string of on-the-nose cover songs — like Jerry Reed’s Smokey and the Bandit trucker anthem “East Bound and Down,” which Midland performed Wednesday night on the 52nd annual Cma Awards.
