In honor of beloved NBC sitcom Community and its upcoming movie spinoff, let’s begin with some Remedial Chaos Theory. Without the release of a tepidly-received action comedy in 2005, you wouldn’t be reading this article right now.
That’s because if the Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie-starring film Mr. and Mrs. Smith didn’t premiere 20 years ago, then there wouldn’t be a TV version starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine today. And if there’s no 2024 Mr. and Mrs. Smith then we wouldn’t get a very honest and open Donald Glover on a press tour, eagerly answering every question about the Community movie that comes his way.
Truly, the Troy Barnes actor has been an open book when it comes to his involvement in the Community movie of late. Just last week he confirmed to Entertainment Tonight that he was “all in” on the film...

Jenna Ortega is teasing the second season of Wednesday, saying that each episode will feel like a movie.
“I’ve received some scripts now for the second season, and we’re definitely leaning into a little bit more horror,” Ortega told Laverne Cox while being interviewed for E! on the Emmys red carpet. “It’s really, really exciting because all throughout the show [Wednesday] never really changes and that’s what’s wonderful about her.”
She continued, “There’s some really good one-liners and I think everything is bigger. It’s a lot more action-packed. I think each episode will probably feel a little bit more like a movie, which is nice.”
The second season of the Netflix series has moved filming locations to Ireland after filming the first season in Romania. Wednesday EP Steve Stark recently revealed that production for the series would begin in April.

Plot: With his job, life and family unraveling around him, a despondent Bernard dusts off a jewelry box and unintentionally releases genie Flora, who just might be able to help him. Maybe. It’s a longshot, frankly. In the process, Flora and Bernard will discover that love, and an unexpected friendship, can unleash a special holiday magic all its own.

Exclusive: Writer-director Courtney J. Camerota has wrapped production on her first feature, Dead Guy, a dark comedy shot under an Interim Agreement that will be introduced to buyers at AFM by CAA Media Finance. Among those in the starry cast are two-time Oscar nominee Michael Shannon (The Bikeriders), Golden Globe nominee Eva Longoria (Sylvie’s Love), Judy Greer (White House Plumbers), Luis Guzman (Story Ave), Amaury Nolasco (The Valet), Rory Culkin (Black Mirror), Curtis Armstrong (New Girl), Ashley Reyes (Walker), and Richard Ellis (Walker).
Dead Guy‘s plot is set into motion when an abrasive old man suddenly dies in the apartment of a neighbor. An absurd game of hot potato then begins with the not-so-dearly departed, as neighbors and building workers each pass the body along, in the hopes of not being linked to the old man’s demise.
Marking the launch of Shft, the new production company of Zac Adams, Dead Guy is also produced by Ryan Lewis of Ryan J. Lewis, Esq, as well as Chadd Harbold of Post Film. Jack Christian of Filmology served as a producer and financier. Exec producers included D.J. McPherson of Filmology, Jared Safier and Justin Safier of Safier Entertainment, Russ Posternak of Post Film, and Nathan Marcus.
Said Camerota, “I wrote this script years ago and to finally see it come to life is a dream come true. The opportunity to work with such an incredible cast, crew and producing team for my directorial debut has been an absolute honor. I can’t wait for the world to see Dead Guy.”
Producer Zac Adams stated that “as both a filmmaker and movie lover, the main goal is to always create films that are not only of the highest quality, but films that are enjoyable. With the world being as dark as it’s been the past few years, I hope our film helps spread some much needed light. It was an absolute honor and privilege in helping Courtney’s vision come to life.”
Added producer Ryan Lewis, “When I read this script I knew this movie had to be made. I’m thrilled that I got to help make it, and got to do so with both a friend and client in Courtney. Our incredible cast is a testament to Courtney’s writing and I’m overjoyed to see her vision come to life on the big screen.”
Shannon is repped by CAA, Range, and Yorn, Levine, Barnes; Longoria by WME, Linden Entertainment, and Yorn, Levine, Barnes; Greer by CAA, Artists First, and Felker Toczek Suddleson; Guzman by Gersh and Gravesend Entertainment; Nolasco by Brillstein Entertainment Partners and Goodman, Genow, Schenkman; Culkin by Paradigm and Brookside Artist Management; Armstrong by Cesd; and Reyes by Stewart Talent and Mosaic.

Story Ave starring Luis Guzman grossed $9.85k in a limited opening at one theater, Quad Cinema, with multiple sold-out shows. The first feature from director Aristotle Torres, which won for Best Cinematography at SXSW (see Deadline review) expands to Chicago and the Bronx next week, followed by LA and additional markets October 13.
Guzman plays a no-nonsense subway operator who becomes an unlikely mentor to a teenager (Asante Blackk) caught up in the dangerous world of Bronx graffiti gangs. Written by Torres and Bonsu Thompson. Produced by Jamie Foxx.
In an overall market “that’s not exactly easy,” Story Ave pulled in a diverse crowd, said Kino’s director of theatrical distribution, Maxwell Wolkin. “You have to get creative, and find an angle, and find things that hit. And it’s not necessarily always what you expect, but this film is audience friendly, it’s got a real voice, it’s connecting with people.

One of the biggest box office surprises in 2013 was the comedy film "We're the Millers," which featured Jason Sudeikis, Jennifer Aniston, Emma Roberts, and Will Poulter as a ragtag group of amateur drug smugglers posing as a family in the hopes of bringing home a massive payday. The road trip comedy was a huge financial success and is considered by many to be one of the very best films of Sudeikis' career. Directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber ("Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story"), the film also features a knock-out supporting cast including Nick Offerman, Kathryn Hahn, Ed Helms, Molly Quinn, Luis Guzman, Thomas Lennon, Ken Marino, Tomer Sisley, Matthew Willig, and the feature film debut of Sam Richardson.

When you look at Adam Sandler’s filmography, you might either think outrageous comedy or some seriously impressive dramatic turns in movies like Punch Drunk Love, Uncut Gems and Hustle. But for his latest Netflix flick, he is taking a back seat on camera by basically playing the beleaguered dad to his real-life daughters Sadie and Sunny Sandler, all in fictionalized roles but nevertheless all still in the family. Sandler’s real influence in You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah is as a producer, and in this instance he has brought forward the right creative elements to make this adaptation of Fiona Rosenbloom’s YA book a complete delight.

This story about Natasha Lyonne and “Poker Face” first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Comedy issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine. All actor interviews in that issue were conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike began.
In each episode of “Poker Face,” the Peacock series created by Rian Johnson, Natasha Lyonne’s Charlie Cale, a former casino worker on the run from some very bad men, solves murder mysteries in the towns she travels through, aided by her ability to detect when someone is lying. Charlie is no saint, but she lives by a strong moral code.
But let’s let Lyonne explain it in the most Natasha Lyonne way imaginable. “Rian and I have this real shared love of crossword puzzles and puzzles in general — it’s how we pass time together on set between shots,” she said. “So we discovered that Charlie was going to have this...
