Back in 2016, when Danny Ocean scribbled out the lyrics to “Me Rehúso” in the quiet of his bedroom, he was really only writing for one person. Music is a universal language. You don’t have to understand the lyrics to feel the joys, the heartbreaks, and the frustrations expressed in a melody. You don’t have to pinpoint musical styles to feel the nostalgia a beat can invoke. For the likes of Bratty in Mexico to Anatomy Rabbit in Thailand, the gentle exploration of love is a palpable and common through line. For Sleepy Hallow in Brooklyn and PinkPantheress in the UK, their nods to ’90s production and expansion of classic international genres, respectively, both hold...

The parade of collaborations between Jamaican dancehall acts and Nigerian afrobeats singers continues with “Boom Bang,” a sugary single from Konshens and Davido. The sticky core of this track is a sing-song jumble — “boom bum ba-dum bum bum ba-da-bum” — that descends in conjunction with a pinging bass line.

The rising Colombian singer Feid released “Fumeteo,” a thunking yet hummable reggaeton single, on Thursday. It’s the first cut from an upcoming album due out later this year.
The production on “Fumeteo” is gaunt, little more than a blistering beat and a four-note riff that tumbles downward before climbing skyward. This skin-and-bones set-up means that minor embellishments have a major impact: A second instrument that sounds like a programmed string section hammers out three quick notes, evoking Dr. Dre radio hits from 20 years ago. And Feid adds a pleasantly...

Ty Dolla $ign, Jack Harlow, and 24kGoldn have teamed up for a new song, “I Won,” the first official single from the upcoming soundtrack for the next Fast and Furious movie, F9.
The song is anchored by big bass and drum hits, topped by a light synth riff that gives the song a sly edge. The verses from Harlow and 24kGoldn are, fittingly, all about big boasts and fast cars, while Ty Dolla $ign caps things off with a triumphant hook, “Medals round my neck because I won, I won...

Panamanian artist Sech has released a new track, “911,” as well as an accompanying music video.
The track finds Sech brushing off a bad relationship, ending the chorus with a ruthless kiss off, “Si estas herida pues llama al 911, no a mí,” which translates to, “If you’re hurt then call 911, not me.”
The song’s video, directed by Squid, provides a delightfully over-the-top visual accompaniment to the song, with Sech reluctantly working at an emergency call center, blowing up an ambulance and — for good measure — winning the lottery (Latin...

In a move few saw coming, Maluma pulled a page out of Beyoncé's playbook and dropped a surprise album in the wee hours of Friday morning. Titled Papi Juancho, the 22-track project marks the 26-year-old Latin superstar's fifth studio album and brings back the old reggaeton sound that first made me fall in love with him, a departure from the more pop-style music we last heard on 11:11. Produced by The Rude Boyz (who have worked with Maluma since his first album), Papi Juancho is a tribute to his native Colombia and features a handful of collaborations with some of Maluma's idols, including Justin Quiles, Lenny Tavárez, Myke Towers, Yandel, and Zion.

Maluma feat. Lenny Tavárez, Justin Quiles, “Parce”
Surprise! Colombian singer-songwriter Maluma dropped his fifth studio album on Friday morning, titled Papi Juancho. After playing the “Pretty Boy” in his Grammy-nominated album, 11:11, this summer the Medellín heartthrob resuscitates the “Dirty Boy” persona that first garnered him his global fanbase … and the occasional spell of controversy.

Colombian singer-songwriter Feid and Puerto Rican crooner Justin Quiles made R&b-reggaeton magic in their 2019 track, “Porfa.” Produced by Feid’s fellow parcero, Sky Rompiendo, the song is a highlight from his latest album, Ferxxo Vol 1: M.O.R.
After receiving much fanfare across Latin America, including a Number One spot on the Colombian pop chart, Feid assembled mighty team of Latin dynamos to give “Porfa” — the bite-sized word for “please” in Spanish — an extra jolt of star power. In “Porfa (Remix),” Feid and Quiles get a boost from hitmakers Maluma,...

There are three immediate standouts on J Balvin’s new album Colores: “Azul,” with its relentlessly hummable hook written in part by the formidable Justin Quiles, “Gris,” which weaves pinprick guitar lines around a gnawing beat, and “Arcoíris,” which transforms Buena Vista Social Club’s classic “Chan Chan” into a modern dancefloor killer.
All three tracks feature contributions from the Haitian-born, New York-based artist-producer Michael Brun. Brun has been working with Balvin intermittently since 2018; he also introduced the Colombian superstar to Mr. Eazi, leading to their essential collaboration “Como un Bebe.

In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic sweeping the planet, Latin music’s biggest names, from Juanes to Alejandro Sanz, have urged their fans to stay home. But Puerto Rican Mc Darell said it best when he tweeted on Tuesday: “Nobody Go To The Discotek. Everybody Go Home.”
Now, with U.S. cities ramping up restrictions on public events, Panamanian urbano singer Sech had no choice but to cancel the remainder of his Sueños tour. In lieu of touring the West Coast as planned, he will stream an acoustic set...

Marco “Tainy” Masís first made a name for himself producing reggaeton classics alongside his mentors, the legendary duo Luny Tunes. Eventually, he’d play a critical role in the making of Grammy-nominated hits by Latin pop titans like J Balvin and Bad Bunny.
But this Friday, the acclaimed Puerto Rican producer arrives as an artist with his debut Ep, The Kids Who Grew Up on Reggaeton, released via his boutique label NEON16 and Roc Nation Records.

Yashua, a singer with a misty-eyed falsetto and a polished moonwalk, is only 20, but he says he has already experienced every possible shade of romantic torment.
“I’ve dated girls older than me; I’ve dated girls younger than me,” he explains earnestly. “And it wouldn’t be like, we date for three months. No: Some of these girls I’ve dated for eight months, a year, two years, three years. I have a lot of experience with girls and with heartbreak.”
Yashua catalogs all of this on his debut Ep 777, out Friday.

Dalex and Rafa Pabón’s “Pa Mí” is the latest single to benefit from the ensemble-remix treatment that has boosted recent hits like Nio García, Casper Mágico and Darell’s “Te Boté,” El Alfa’s “Suave” and Alex Rose’s “Toda.”
In the original “Pa Mí,” Dalex sings with stirring force about romantic fixation, sounding possessive to the point of anguish, while Rafa Pabón’s tone is uncaring, removed from it all. Dimelo Flow, who also produces for the singer and hit-writer Justin Quiles, is responsible for the beat, a simple but handsome loop.

Here’s a foolproof way to turn a hit into a bigger hit: Release a remix version that includes new verses from other stars. No genre is doing this more effectively than reggaeton right now — see the billion-views-and-climbing smash “Te Boté.”
The latest hit to get the revise-and-re-energize treatment is Mozart La Para’s “Mujeres,” originally released in June. The new version features nimble rapping from Farruko, a Puerto Rican star fluent in both reggaeton and trap, along with the duo Jowell & Randy, who enjoyed a massive hit of their own last year with “Bonita.
