Thor and Captain Marvel, at various points, have been labeled the strongest Avengers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, showing great feats of strength at various points in their tenure as superheroes. Be it Captain Marvel’s fight against Thanos, or Thor’s battle with Hela, these characters have routinely proven themselves to be strong and competent fighters.

However, with a recent change in Marvel Comics, the Fantastic Four might have the Avengers beat, especially Reed Richards and Sue Storm (who have both served on the team). Reed Richards and Sue Storm were both exposed to a cosmic storm, which altered their bodies, giving Richards the power of a malleable body and Sue the ability to turn invisible.

When discussing MCU characters, our focus often gravitates towards the Avengers and prominent villains. However, the MCU owes much of its success to secondary characters whose roles significantly influence the storyline.
That’s why fans recently turned to Ranker to determine the top 10 most underrated characters in the MCU. While some may never regain the spotlight due to past events, others still hold the potential for greater recognition.
10. Talos
Talos made his debut in ‘Captain Marvel’ as the compassionate leader of the displaced Skrulls, sparking hopes among fans for his significant role in the MCU’s future. While he did appear in the recent ‘Secret Invasion,’ his storyline took a tragic turn. We discovered that his life was even more sorrowful than anticipated, with his daughter nearly joining the enemy ranks. Ultimately, Talos sacrificed himself to protect the human president from Gravik’s attack, preserving his ultimate aspiration.

When commenting on the MCU characters, we almost always reference the big hitters like the Avengers or the most notable villains. The world of Marvel Comics is huge, but so is the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). And in the last few years, the MCU has expanded and grown into an even bigger entity than it was thanks to its Multiversal concept. Due to the Multiverse and time traveling, the MCU also brought two great characters back from the dead, i.e. Loki and Gamora.

Despite the shocking return of these two beloved characters, fans eagerly anticipate that it will potentially open the door for others to return. Yet it is essential to remember that not every fallen hero will rise again, since for some characters like Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, their legacy matters more than fans’ desires.

Comic book author Brian Michael Bendis has set a first-look deal with Amazon is already developing three TV series under the new pact based on his previous works: “Jinx,” “Murder Inc.” and “Pearl.”
“Jinx” is a crime-ridden love story unfolding on a high stakes treasure hunt, per Amazon’s series description. Our players are: Jinx Alameda, a bounty hunter at the top of her game who’s tired of her grimy life; Goldfish, a charming con man and wanted felon who falls head over heels for Jinx; and Columbia, Goldfish’s loose-cannon partner, who has big criminal dreams. Their paths join when they’re pulled into a search for missing mob money — a payout so big that it lures them away from the familiar streets of Cleveland, into a dangerous, unpredictable misadventure that will change the course of their lives.
“Jinx” is executive produced by Bendis along with showrunners Ayelet Waldman and Michael Chabon.

In this alternative reality among the multiverse of the Avengers, Happy Hogan accidentally turned into a gigantic, purple-colored Hulk and saved Stark Tech from Tony’s long-standing rival, Justin Hammer. Marvel Studios’ latest Disney+ series, ‘Secret Invasion,’ premiered on the streamer last June and aired for six episodes. Although the premise teased a more mature and grounded approach, similar to 2014’s acclaimed movie ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier,’ the series was a disappointment due to its slow pacing, writing, and the simplification of the plot compared to the source material.
Another thing that fans disliked about the series was mishandling the new characters and the unjustified and pointless deaths of some fan-favorite characters. Cobie Smulders’ Maria Hill, who was part of the MCU since 2012, and Ben Mendelsohn, who joined the franchise in 2019, didn’t survive to see the series’ last episode. Although these deaths could’ve been justified for the sake of the main villain’s character development, it turned out they really died for nothing, particularly Smulders’ character.

An MCU producer explained the real reasoning behind the decision to have Maria Hill killed off in Marvel Studios’ Secret Invasion.
Although Maria Hill was billed to be a major part of Disney+’s Secret Invasion as she got her long-awaited reunion with Nick Fury, her return didn’t last long at all as Cobie Smulders’ hero met her end in Episode 1.
She became the first major casualty in this series as Gravik took her out in Russia, leaving countless MCU fans disappointed as Smulders’ run with Marvel ended after 11 years in action.

‘Secret Invasion,’ currently the latest MCU series on Disney+, debuted in June and aired on the streamer for six episodes. Although the series sounded promising from the start with its grounded political thriller premise and more serious and mature approach, the series turned out to be a disappointment, particularly after the last episode. Don’t get us wrong, the series wasn’t all bad, but as we always like to say, it could’ve been better.
The series killed off two characters who had a close personal relationship with Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury. Cobie Smulders’ Maria Hill, who was a part of the franchise since 2012, and Talos, a Skrull general whom Ben Mendelsohn played since his MCU debut in 2019’s ‘Captain Marvel.’ While these deaths could’ve been justified if used for Nick Fury’s motivation and further character development, the sad news is that, ultimately, these fan-favorite characters died for nothing.

When Disney+ announced Secret Invasion, it was poised to be a more adult, grittier take on the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In the wake of the season finale, Secret Invasion seems more like a colossal waste of time.
Six episodes isn't a significant investment, but nonetheless, you expect a payoff after spending that much time watching a season of TV.
Instead of being closed-ended, the series was more about setting up the following stories in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We watched six episodes and got little to no satisfaction with the conclusion.
The best compliment I can give Secret Invasion is that it was different from the other shows we've watched on Disney+ set in this universe, but since it was also the biggest chore to watch, that's not saying much.
I wasn't the biggest fan of She-Hulk, but at least the characters evolved as the series progressed.

Like it or not, fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will definitely remember the Samuel. L Jackson-led Secret Invasion. Whether it be as the show that sent Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) off in underwhelming style, or as the six-part series that created the MCU’s most Op character in Super Skrull G’iah (Emilia Clarke), there’s a lot to discuss now the final credits have rolled.
As with all these Disney+ series, Secret Invasion set the stage for upcoming outings, including The Marvels and Captain America: New World Order. However, you might’ve missed a major tease of a whole franchise hiding in plain sight. If the surprise reveal that Ms. Marvel’s Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) could be a mutant has taught us anything, it’s to hunt in the most unlikely places for the X-Men. In the Secret Invasion finale, it looks like a case of X marks the spot.

Los Angeles, July 22 (Ians) Actor Kingsley Ben-Adir, who plays the role of the Skrull villain Gravik in ‘Secret Invasion’, has detailed his motivations and personality, saying that ultimately Gravik is someone who’s had too much of Nick Fury and his empty promises and now he trusts no one but himself.
Deception and manipulation are key points in spy-thrillers, and with no longer sure of who to trust anymore when amid massive chaos and looming destruction, Marvel Studios’, new series ‘Secret Invasion’ packs in a darker and more grounded approach to its storytelling.

He’s definitely of the belief that nothing was going to change and that Fury’s full of it. He’s not buying any of it anymore. So,...

Three episodes of Marvel’s “Secret Invasion” will stream on Hulu ahead of the finale of the Disney+ series. The episodes “Resurrection,” “Promises” and “Betrayed” are set to stream from Friday, July 21, through Aug. 17.
The move marks the first time a Marvel series for Disney+ gets the Hulu treatment. The sibling streamer previously featured the “Star Wars” series “Andor” for two weeks in the fall following its strong performance on Disney+.
The show, which is set in the MCU’s present day, follows Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury as he learns of a clandestine invasion of Earth by a faction of shapeshifting Skrulls.
Fury is joined by allies including Everett Ross, Maria Hill and the Skrull Talos, who has made a life for himself on Earth. Together they race against time to thwart an imminent Skrull invasion and save humanity.

Marvel Studios’ Secret Invasion is coming to Hulu. Ahead of the series’ season finale on Disney+, the first three episodes, “Resurrection,” “Promises” and “Betrayed” will begin streaming tomorrow July 21 through Thursday, August 17 on Hulu.
The first five episodes of the series, starring Samuel L. Jackson, are currently streaming on Disney +, with the finale Episode 6 premiering next Wednesday, July 26.
While a number of titles have moved between Hulu and Disney+ before they were on air, this marks one of the first times that a Disney+ original series will also stream on Hulu. Andor and American Born Chinese have also previously streamed on Hulu.
High Fidelity moved from Disney+ to Hulu, as did Love, Victor, while The Mysterious Benedict Society moved from Hulu to Disney+, but all of these moves came after greenlight and before premiere.

The mettle of a leader is tested in the toughest of times, and the penultimate episode of Disney+’s Secret Invasion highlights that through the roles of the now-deceased Talos, a determined Fury, and a restless, desperate Gravik. After the Skrull crisis reached its worst state in the previous episode, with the terrorist Skrull leader Gravik leading his operatives into an attack on the convoy of United States President Ritson while posing as Russians, the situation went haywire at both the Skrull and human fronts. Colonel James Rhodes, who was so far acting as P.O.T.U.S.’ Chief of Staff, is revealed to be a Skrull operative named Raava, whose deliberate inaction resulted in the ambush.
The arrival of Fury and Talos to aid the human forces spoils Gravik’s plan, and Talos sacrifices himself while saving the President’s life. In the previous episode, viewers also saw...

If there’s one thing that the MCU has taught us about Nick Fury, it’s that he’s pretty damned good on his own, but when he gets a team together who work towards his cause, whether it be Skrulls, Shield agents, or Avengers, he’s a lot better. Secret Invasion has compounded this theme throughout, revealing that some of Nick’s greatest achievements would never have happened without his worker bees. And in its fifth episode, “Harvest”, Nick’s new team begins forming in order to help him deal with the Gravik situation, even as he maintains he’s the only one who can really resolve the conflict and clean up the mess he made.
To that end, the “good guys” are split off into pairs ahead of the show’s climax . G’iah (Emilia Clarke) and Varra (Charlayne Woodard) meet to deal with...

With a rich tapestry of characters, it's disconcerting Secret Invasion can't tell a cohesive story worthy of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
After watching Secret Invasion Season 1 Episode 3, my hopes are officially dashed that the series can turn things around.
If you're not worth watching by the halfway mark, then it's pretty much a given that the second half won't improve much.
It's a shame because the cast is phenomenal.
You don't have Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Olivia Colman, and Emilia Clarke in the same project and waste their talents.
G'iah's death lacked the punch in the guts we got at the end of Secret Invasion Season 1 Episode 1.
Maria Hill was done dirty by the writers because, just when we were promised a more significant arc for Colbie Smulders' alter ego, she was gunned down.
G'iah has been challenging to read, thanks to her lack of expression.

Actress Olivia Colman, who stars as Sonya Falsworth, a seasoned MI6 agent in the espionage thriller series ‘Secret Invasion’, has shared that actor Samuel L. Jackson complimented her for her choice of sneakers.
In the series, Nick Fury and Sonya Falsworth are old friends but yet don’t completely trust each other. Olivia Colman couldn’t contain her excitement when she found out she would be working with the legendary Samuel L. Jackson in the series.
Talking about her love for Samuel L Jackson, she said: “I love Samuel L. Jackson. I was so excited and so nervous when I knew I was going to meet him, and he was just so lovely. He called my sneakers dope, and I don’t think I took them off for a year!”
She further mentioned: “I think we had chemistry on set because we were so excited to meet each other, and we got on really well.

The first Disney+ series of the MCU’s fifth phase of storytelling, Secret Invasion, is airing, and the released first two episodes have provided viewers with a basic overview regarding the grounded espionage plot of the series revolving around shapeshifting alien Skrulls. The eponymous event was of significant importance in Marvel comics, where the infiltration of Skrulls among the ranks of established superheroes and other characters created an engaging, unpredictable intrigue. The Disney+ series takes a different approach to the crisis, bringing street-level players to the forefront. It weaves a political espionage storyline around the crisis, as the Skrulls, who came to seek refuge on Earth, turn out to have been playing the role of puppeteers all along, taking the guise of world leaders to orchestrate global events. Despite the difference in approach, a number of Easter eggs that give a nod to the source material and connection to the...

Marvel Studios’ two latest movies, ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ are now way back in our rearview, but the MCU isn’t planning to slow down any time soon. For the last two weeks, we’ve been following MCU’s newest Disney+ series, ‘Secret Invasion,’ which has four more episodes to air this month.
‘Secret Invasion’ is loosely based on the homonymous comic book storyline of the same name, which is one of the biggest and most ambitious crossovers ever spawned from Marvel Comics.
And although this series is a very loose adaptation, which focuses mainly on Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury and doesn’t feature any regular MCU superheroes, the series has gathered positive reviews so far thanks to its seriousness and more realistic approach. However, the fact that AI made the opening title sequence was a subject of criticism among fans and visual artists.

Secret Invasion is not the first time the MCU has dipped its toe into the spy genre; Captain America: The Winter Soldier has been a fan favorite among MCU films since it was released in 2014. But Secret Invasion, a show following not superheroes (Rhodey aside), but human spies and aliens posing as humans, embraces the spy genre more than anything we’ve seen yet. With Russia back in the bad guy role, the show draws on the best spy dramas of the Cold War, and with London featuring quite heavily in its story and the British Prime Minister having a major role, a lot of those dramas are British spy classics.

Director Ali Selim, who has directed the spy-thriller-espionage series ‘Secret Invasion’, has said the show has a darker and more grounded tone as opposed to other MCU offerings. However, the director has said that one of the things which helped in enhancing that tone was the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and the massive tensions between US and Russia.
According to The Hollywood Reporter: “It’s coincidence, serendipity, danger and all of the above. But the thing that I like about it is that this show is meant to be real and grounded,” Selim said.
“The stakes are Earth and humanity, as opposed to something off in outer space that’s more abstract or fictional. So the real-life conflict between Russia and the U.S. only helps to make this story feel more real’.”

The MCU is pretty dang low on Avengers right now, but one theory surrounding Marvel’s new Secret Invasion series is that it’s about to bring back a lost member of the Og team.
While it might seem pretty “out there”, the idea could solve a few of the MCU’s current issues, some of which arguably began when the 2019 blockbuster Avengers: Endgame brought the Infinity Saga to a box office-slaying climax and killed off big hitters like Tony Stark/Iron Man and Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow.
The mantle of Captain America was passed from Steve Rogers to Sam Wilson, Bruce Banner went off to have some family-related Hulk adventures, and a massive new MCU saga soon got underway. Sam became the focus of his own TV series, as did Avenger Hawkeye, while Thor went on to lead another big budget movie in Thor: Love and Thunder,...

After starting on a serious note by showcasing the complexities introduced by the infiltration of the shapeshifting alien Skrulls into human society, the second episode of Disney+’s latest release, Secret Invasion, dials it down a bit to showcase the implications of the invasion in its true sense. In the previous episode, we saw that as a result of consecutive terrorist attacks conducted by a rebel sect of Skrull led by the renegade Gravik, Nick Fury was forced to return to Earth from his aerospace defense mission in space.
Fury learned from his friend, former Skrull leader Talos, and agent Maria Hill that the rebels have created and are using the organization ‘A.A.R.’ (Americans Against Russia) as a front and are planning a bombing of Moscow, which could spark a vicious war between two nations. When Marvel Studios ventured into television by way of Disney+, the expectation was that the brand would be able to dive deeper into its many characters, something it can only do so much of in a two-hour movie. Unfortunately for Secret Invasion star Cobie Smulders, her fan-favorite character Maria Hill will not be the recipient of such treatment, as the former Shield agent met her end in the Ali Selim-directed series premiere, “Resurrection.”
Considering her 2011 casting in The Avengers (2012) led to another five movies and three series, Smulders is taking her MCU exit in stride. (Her seventh movie appearance is reportedly coming in November’s The Marvels.)

Spoiler Alert: This story discusses major plot developments in the series premiere of Marvel Studios’ “Secret Invasion,” currently streaming on Disney+.
Since her first appearance as Maria Hill in 2012’s “The Avengers,” Cobie Smulders has popped into the Marvel Cinematic Universe roughly half-dozen times, racing into danger and cheating death as the hyper-competent lieutenant to Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), most recently in 2019’s “Spider-Man: Far From Home.” So when Marvel started planning the Disney+ series “Secret Invasion” — about how the shape-shifting Skrulls from the 2019’s prequel film “Captain Marvel” have turned against Fury and started infiltrating all levels of human society — it made perfect sense for Maria to show up, too.
Only this time, death caught up with her.
In the series premiere, Maria works with Fury and his Skrull bff Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) to thwart a plan by Skrull separatist Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir) to detonate a series of...

The premiere of Marvel’s latest Disney+ series Secret Invasion asks us to believe that this is going to be a different kind of Marvel Cinematic Universe property. Ostensibly a darker, grittier tale focused on grizzled ex-shield leader Nick Fury, the story requires him to face his own complicity in creating the very Skrull crisis he’s now rushing to solve. There are real life or death stakes with genuine consequences attached, and the motivations of the Skrull rebel faction aiming to wipe out humanity are certainly understandable if not particularly commendable ones. (Fury and Carol Danvers promised to find the displaced aliens a new home back in Captain Marvel but conveniently forgot their plight as soon as other villains and bigger problems came calling.)

When Secret Invasion was picked up at Disney+ with a mix of familiar faces from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and new actors, hearing that Colbie Smulders was returning as Maria Hill was welcomed by the fans.
Unfortunately, Maria Hill's journey on Secret Invasion was over by the end of the series premiere.
In a scene that rocked the MCU to its core, Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir) posed as Nick (Samuel L. Jackson) and shot Maria.
During Maria's final moments, Nick showed up to hear her saying, "It was you."
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Smulders opened up about the development.
"To have Fury … know that Hill thinks that Fury shot her — that's the pain of that moment," she said.
While the show didn't confirm whether Maria knew the person who shot her was not her longtime friend and confidante, Smulders doesn't know the answer.

This post contains spoilers for Secret Invasion.
As a spy story involving the shape-shifting Skrulls, Secret Invasion always presented itself as a twisty adventure in which nothing is what it seems. So while some people were certainly shocked when the first episode of the series ended with the death of Maria Hill, others assumed that the scene would echo CIA Agent Everett K. Ross’s death during the cold open. She would be revealed to be a Skrull and the real Maria Hill would return, probably to save Nick Fury in an exciting set piece.
But the real real Maria Hill has arrived to disabuse us of those hopes. Speaking with Vanity Fair, Hill’s actor Cobie Smulders weighed in on her character’s fate with some disappointing news for anyone writing the above headcanon.

If the first episode of Kyle Bradstreet’s Secret Invasion has taught us anything, it’s to trust no one. With shocking Skrull reveals and even more shocking deaths, the six-episode series got off to a flying start as a loose adaptation of the 2008 comic series and a long-awaited standalone story for Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury.
Hopefully taking some of the secrets out of Secret Invasion, fans are hoping to find out more about Nicholas J. Fury. It took the Marvel Cinematic Universe 11 years to tell us how Fury ended up with his signature eyepatch in Captain Marvel, and with a convenient 30-year gap between that adventure and the events of Secret Invasion, there are plenty of gaps to fill in – even with him being a pile of dust for five of them.

"She knows every secret, and can take down any threat. Remember former 'Deputy Director' 'Maria Hill’ (Cobie Smulders) and her life of espionage and bravery:
"...she fought a god in the 'Battle of New York'. She took on 'Hydra' when it infiltrated 'S.H.I.E.L.D.'
"Hill has put her life on the line time and time again to save strangers from every corner of the world...."

The recently-released streaming series ‘Secret Invasion’ boasts of a subversive tone which is a trademark of Marvel. While describing the show, director Ali Selim said, “I think that the series has a really interesting subversive Marvel tone that takes it and flips it on its head, which I think will challenge, surprise and please the audience and give them something unique and different.”
Elaborating on the story, Ali said, “It goes back to Nick Fury. It’s the Nick story. And Nick is a human. Whatever we think about his trench coat and his eyepatch and how cool Sam Jackson is, Nick Fury is a human. He’s a human with a certain kind of power, but not a superpower like Captain America or Captain Marvel. So, that immediately demands a more grounded, gritty series.”

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for Marvel’s Secret Invasion, episode 1, “Resurrection.”] It’s perhaps poetic—and shocking—that an episode titled “Resurrection” would end with a major character death. At the end of Secret Invasion’s premiere, Agent Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders), a mainstay in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2012’s The Avengers, gets caught up in the panicked rush of the crowd as Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir) enacts the first step in his explosive plan for Skrull domination. Maria turns from helping a survivor to locate her longtime friend and ally, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) through the haze of smoky chaos. “Hill!” Fury shouts—and then he shoots her in the stomach. Disney+/Marvel That was not, in fact, Fury. It was the villainous Gravik, utilizing his Skrull abilities to take Fury’s appearance. Unfortunately, the distinction doesn’t matter much for poor Maria. She bleeds out in surprisingly graphic fashion for the typically sterile MCU...
