As the search for the next “Squid Game” continues, South Korea brought out the big guns at MipTV, introducing several scripted and unscripted offerings. These includes FormatEast’s intergenerational game show “Gganbu Race,” inspired by the Netflix smash hit.
“It’s a slang term meaning close friends and companions. Kids would say that when forming teams to play games,” said producer Fay Zhang during the K Formats: The Next Big Hits from Korea session, mentioning “Squid Game’s” episode where the main character joined forces with female and older contestants.
“Everyone thought they would lose. They won, because of an unexpected synergy effect. Our main concept is to overcome prejudice and win through cooperation beyond age.”
The show will see juniors and seniors battling for prize money. They have to choose partners not knowing which games they will play, but there is a twist: the bigger the age difference, the bigger the prize.

2019, the centennial of South Korean cinema, proved to be an interesting year for the country’s film industry. Where mainstream cinema saw great commercial and critical success with films like “Parasite”, “Extreme Job” and “Exit”, independent and arthouse cinema also thrived, with several films winning important awards at film festivals around the world. This last aspect is probably the most hopeful for Korean cinema, whose independent part has been suffering for years, but through a number of initiatives, mostly coming from Busan International Film Festival, seems to start picking up again. The success of those films is still festival-driven and not distribution-driven, but the fact remains that something seems to be changing in the Korean movie industry, as the people “running the show” begin to realize that they cannot continue in the exactly same path that kickstarted the success of local cinema more than twenty years ago.

Doing its rounds this year in the festival scene is this South Korean movie which talks about family and what happens when relationships are not able to withstand the rigors of time. The camera angles were unique and mostly catered to the Pov of the daughter. I felt that the faces of characters were shown only when necessary, a special talent used exceptionally well by Abbas Kiarostami. For that matter, the direction by Sol Kim & Lee Jihyoung and cinematography by Kim Jinhyeong needs special mention.
