‘Wonder Woman 2’ doesn’t hit theaters until November 2019 but we have the lowdown on the upcoming movie and its villain, Cheetah. Watch our video here.
We know that Gal Gadot will return as Diana Prince, aka Wonder Woman, and that Patty Jenkins is back as director. The film will be set in the 1980s, which has been further confirmed when Warner Bros. purchased every domain name from wonderwoman1980.com through wonderwoman1989.com, a possible clue to the new film’s title.
We also know that Kristen Wiig is playing the bloodthirsty demigod, Cheetah, an established villain of Wonder Woman in the comics.
ORIGINS: The comic books have repeatedly retconned the story of the Cheetah since her 1943 introduction as an aristocrat in a catsuit.
The new film will most likely feature the Barbara Minerva version of Cheetah. Created by George Pérez and Len Wein for “Wonder Woman” #7 in August 1987, Doctor Minerva’s backstory has been amended in the aftermath of two DC revamps: The New 52 and DC Universe Rebirth.
Her iteration as an archeologist would contrast perfectly with the film version of Diana Prince as a museum curator. We can also assume that her powers will come from a mystical curse that Wonder Woman wasn’t able to prevent, and that will fuel her hatred.
POWERS: The Cheetah’s deadly claws are backed by super strength, cat-like agility, and super-speed.
MOVIE: Coming November 2019, the movie is set in the 1980s, and there’s a good chance that the Cheetah may get a hand in taking on the Amazon princess.
Cheetah often allied with supervillain super group The Legion of Doom, which was hinted at during the post-credit scene for ‘Justice League,’ when Lex Luthor met with Deathstroke and declared: “Shouldn’t we have a league of our own?”
This film could be a first in the building blocks of the evil answer to the Justice League’s heroes.
Wiig may be best known for “Saturday Night Live” and ‘Bridesmaids,’ but she’s taken on more dramatic roles in ‘Mother!’ and ‘Welcome to Me.’ She could takes these dark and light sides of the Cheetah and balance comedic one-liners with the tragedy of a woman trapped in a cat’s body.
