Touch of Evil, 1958 at Noir City Hollywood, 2019
When Welles got even with Hollywood
By Alex DeleonToe Is often cited as the last true Hollywood noir and a masterpiece of the genre to boot.Although there are some masterful touches such as the famous extended tracking shot that opens the film it comes across to me as a muddled parody of a noir rather than a noir per se, and as Welles’s tawdry version of a slap in the Face to an industry that abandoned him. And if, as diehard Welles advocates insist, it is a masterpiece it is a very flawed and messy masterpiece at best with gaping logical potholes strewn throughout such as Heston blithely abandoning his luscious new wife (Janet Leigh) and stashing her away in a remote fleabag motel run by sleazy thugs so he can attend to investigatory business in the midst of their honeymoon.
