As the first quarter of 2021 comes to a close, the film world isn’t exactly back to normal, but at least the festival circuit has remained a platform for new movies in search of distribution. Despite its virtual incarnation, Sundance still saw its largest sale ever, with “Coda” going to Apple for a record $25 million. The deals weren’t that crazy out of Berlin and SXSW, but both saw ample marketplace activity: At Berlin, Neon snatched up Celine Sciamma’s “Petite Maman,” while Magnolia Pictures scored Golden Bear winner “Bad Luck Banging.” At SXSW, Magnolia also nabbed the Udo Kier crowdpleaser “Swan Song.” Nevertheless, as theaters gradually open back up across North America, both festivals offered plenty of options for distributors who will need quality titles to make the trip worthwhile. As usual, several festival highlights still need homes. Here are the best of them.
