Poll: The Directorial Legacy of Wolfgang Petersen †

The IMDb Poll board is very sad to hear that Wolfgang Petersen passed on August 12, 2022. The German Hollywood director was born on March 14, 1941 in Emden, Germany, but was raised in Mecklenburg during WWII. Returning to Emden after war, the whole family suffered from poor circumstances. They lived in a shack-settlement. Already in his school time he filmed little movies with his 8mm cam. Later he handed over his first directorial work at the Ernst Deutsch Theater (Jungen Theater).

In 1966 he changed to the Deutsche Film- und Fernsehakademie Berlin where he did some short movies. And thereby he also stage-managed some theatre plays in Hamburg.

After directing a few movie productions, including detective stories for TV (Tatort) and several other movies for TV, he had his big break-through with the movie Das Boot (1981) from Bavaria Film.
