- The 17th Earl of Oxford, hereditary Lord Great Chamberlain of England, scion of the noble house of Vere (his ancestor Aubrey received titles and estates from William the Conqueror in 1066). Poet, playwright, and courtier to Queen Elizabeth I, he received his classical education at Cambridge and Oxford, studied law at Gray's Inn, and had his own company of players who performed at court and in the public theatres. Due to the extraordinary parallels between what is known about his life and writing, and the language and events of the poems and plays, he is believed by many to have written under the pen-name William Shakespeare.

- Best remembered by his famous novel "O Ateneu", a mixture of autobiography and fiction that tells about his school year during the first years of adolescence, Raul Pompéia is highly regarded as one of the most important writers of the classic Brazilian literature.
He was born in Rio de Janeiro in a household of means. At age 11, his father sent him to the aristocratic school institution Colégio Abílio - which formed the basis for his future novel "O Ateneu". In 1880, at age 17 he wrote his first novel "Uma Tragédia no Amazonas", which went unnoticed by the public. Some time later he goes to the law school at Faculdade do Largo São Francisco, in São Paulo. His conflicting and progressive ideas in favor of abolishing slavery and the end of monarchy isn't seen with good eyes by the academics, so he's constantly failed in exams again and again...but gained some friends too such as Luis Murat, an intellectual with similar thoughts. Later on, he moves to another law school, graduates but never actually works as a lawyer. Instead, he takes several positions in many newspapers and it is in one of those, he publishes "O Ateneu" as a chronic. In the following years, it became a full acclaimed novel.
Now with a formed Republic and no longer a monarchy, Pompéia is chosen to be chairman of the Academia de Belas Artes (Fine Arts Academy). But due to constant rivalry and fights between sections supporting former first Brazilian president Deodoro da Fonseca and the then president Floriano Peixoto, that meant Pompéia wouldn't have an easy term while securing the art projects in Brazil, since he was truly loyal to Peixoto and because of that he gained many enemies and lost several friends. By that time, he was the director of National Library. When Floriano Peixoto died, Raul Pompéia made an inflamed speech honoring the man during his funeral which enraged the crowd and the supporters of the new Brazilian president Prudente de Moraes, who followed a similar line as the first leader. In 1895 he was fired from his position at the library, and to add to it, he was publicly humiliated by a critical article written by his old friend Luis Murat. A severely depressed Pompéia committed suicide on Christmas day at age 32.
The novel that brought him acclaim was made into a TV series in 1979 Memórias de Amor (1979). - Edwin Holt was born on 12 April 1863 in Fort Fairfield, Maine, USA. Silent-film star William Russell was born in the Bronx, New York, in the late 1880s (various sources give it as 1884, 1886 and 1889). His mother, Clara, was a highly regarded stage actress. Russell studied law at Fordham University (and, some sources say, Harvard University). He started a law practice in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, but it wasn't particularly successful. He tried a variety of other jobs--including bookmaker and boxing instructor--before deciding to give the stage a shot. He had actually been a fairly successful child actor on the stage, and after re-entering the profession as an adult, he found himself acting with Ethel Barrymore in "Cousin Kate" on Broadway. Russell kept busy as a stage actor, appearing with many of the top stars of the day, including Chauncey Olcott and Cathrine Countiss. He toured the country in various stock productions.
His film career began at Biograph in 1910 with "The Roman Slave", directed by D.W. Griffith. He stayed almost a year at Biograph, although he was used mostly in small parts. In 1910 he left Biograph for Thanhouser. There he became a star, and Thanhouser put him in quite a few of its productions. His brother Albert Russell also appeared in several of his films.
In 1913 Russell left Thanhouser to return to Biograph, but later that year he again left Biograph to go back to Thanhouser. He finally left Thanhouser and worked for a variety of studios, both major and minor, over the next several years. In 1917 he married actress Charlotte Burton, but it ended in divorce four years later. From 1916-20 he worked for American Film Co., appearing in The Torch Bearer (1916), The Strength of Donald McKenzie (1916) and The Man Who Would Not Die (1916), among others. In 1919 he formed his own production company, William Russell Productions, and produced and appeared in This Hero Stuff (1919), directed by Henry King. He freelanced at studios as varied as Fox Films and Victor. In the 1920s he decided to move to Hollywood after having spent much of his life in New York City. He married actress Helen Ferguson, and that marriage lasted until his death in Beverly Hills, California, on February 18, 1929, from pneumonia.- Jullan Kindahl was born on 12 April 1885 in Stockholm, Stockholms län, Sweden. A former salesman and vaudeville and stage actor, Harold Lockwood was one of the earliest romantic stars of American films. He was paired with Mary Pickford, Kathlyn Williams and Dorothy Davenport, among others, but his most popular films had him as the lover of May Allison, and they became one of the earliest screen romantic teams.
