- Early information on Florence La Badie is sketchy. She is thought to have been born in New York City in 1888, and was either taken away from or given up for adoption by her birth mother. Florence was adopted by a married couple named LaBadie, who legally gave the child their last name. Her adoptive father, Joseph LaBadie, is believed to have been an attorney in Canada, and the family spent time in Montreal, where Florence grew up. She was educated in both Montreal and New York, and after graduation from high school she worked as a model for well-known illustrator (and, later, film director) Penrhyn Stanlaws.
She took up a career on the stage, first appearing there in 1908. She signed up with director Chauncey Olcott's theatrical company, and went on the road with them. In 1909 she went with a friend, Mary Pickford, to the American Biograph film studio in New York to watch Pickford at work in In the Window Recess (1909), and Pickford got her a bit part in the picture. La Badie didn't make any films for a year after that, though, at which time she signed a contract with Biograph.
In 1911 she left Biograph for Thanhouser. She met with great success in Thanhouser's pictures, and was gradually promoted to lead roles, working there from 1911-1917 (making her the player who worked at Thanhouser the longest). She became the best-known of all of Thanhouser's players and was wildly popular in fan magazines and trade journals.
Although she was engaged twice (to actor Val Hush and writer Daniel Carson Goodman), she never married. She was the "companion" of film mogul Marcus Loew for several years.
On August 28, 1917, while driving a car near Ossining, New York, with her fiancé Daniel Goodman, the car's brakes failed and it plunged down an embankment at high speed, rolling over when it hit the bottom. Goodman escaped with relatively minor injuries, but she was thrown from the car and incurred a compound fracture of the pelvis. She was taken to a hospital in Ossining, where her conditioned worsened. She died of septicemia (infection) on August 28. Born in France in 1872, Charles Prince Seigneur had been a stage comedian for years when he made his first films at Charles Pathé's studio in 1909. He quickly became the one film comedian of the time who could compete with Max Linder in terms of popularity, known as Rigadin in France, Moritz in Germany, Whiffles in England, and Tartufini in Italy. However, whereas Linder remains a relatively well-known name among silent film enthusiasts, Prince appears to have been forgotten since his popularity faded after the first world war. Swedish film historian Rune Walderkrantz pointed out that Prince used less refined methods than Linder, being more of a clown in the traditional manner. Prince kept on performing until his death in 1933, however, appearing mostly in bit parts on film.- Mystery thriller writer Arthur Somers Roche was born in Somerville, Massachusetts. He was the son of James Jeffry Roche, a prominent Irish-American author, journalist and diplomat and Mary Frances Halloran, a native of Massachusetts who died of pneumonia in 1885, some months shy of her thirtieth birthday. Roche attended The College of the Holly Cross in Worchester and later Boston College, from which he graduated with a law degree in 1904. Within two years he grew tired of the profession and in 1906 entered the field of journalism with the New York World.
By 1910 Roche was contributing short stories to national magazines and a few years later published "Loot" (1916), his first novel. America's involvement in World War One put Roche's writing career on hiatus while he served as a captain with the US Army Military Intelligence Division. After the war Roche became one of the more prolific authors of that period. In all, before his untimely death at age fifty-one, Roche wrote twenty-three novels, scores of short stories and worked on two plays. Roche would often use his adopted home state of Florida as a backdrop for his fast paced mystery thrillers.
In 1921, Governor Thomas G. McCrea of Arkansas was so impressed with Roche's novel "A Day of Faith". He declared November 21, the day the book was released, a state holiday.
In 1910 Roche married Ethel Kirby Rowell of New York City. She passed away in 1915 around the time of the birth of their son James Jeffrey. On September 28, 1917, he married Ethel Pettit of Stuttgart, Arkansas and became a father for the second time the following year with the birth of their son Clyde. Ethel was also a writer who would go on to survive her husband by some thirty-four years.
Arthur Somers Roche passed away from heart disease complicated by pneumonia at his home on Via Bellaria in Palm Beach, Florida. Along with his wife he was survived by both of his sons. - Beaming, rotund Lennox Pawle is chiefly remembered for his delightful, albeit brief, performance as the 'pixillated' Mr. Dick in MGM's classic David Copperfield (1935). A former newspaperman and owner of a racing publication, Pawle had been on stage in his native England from the 1890s as a comic actor and member of the Maude Adams Playhouse Company. With significant stage experience under his belt, he arrived in the U.S. in 1910. He almost immediately attracted supporting roles on Broadway in long-running hit plays like "Grumpy" and "Monsieur Beaucaire". Only infrequently in films, he portrayed Samuel Pepys in The Glorious Adventure (1922), but otherwise tended to subordinate film acting to his busy stage career. This changed in 1929, when he made three films for Fox. However, during the succeeding decade, he made relatively few and all-too-brief appearances on the silver screen before succumbing to a cerebral hemorrhage on February 22, 1936.

- One of the promising newcomers in baseball was Art Sheehan of San Francisco, California, whose AAA-League records remain unbroken. While attending Galileo High School, Art led the Galileo Lions to the three consecutive championships in '41, '42, and '43 at 18-1 with an Earned-Run-Average of 1.3 and was named MVP of '43. His image was frequently printed in the San Francisco Chronicle and San Francisco Examiner, and headlines about being recruited by the MLB soon followed. This didn't happen though, as he was drafted to serve in World War II. Although offered a position in the Coast Guard, he chose the Air Corps instead because he didn't wanna take the cowardly route. The prospective athlete was quickly promoted to Sergeant and respected by his crew. Art -only two missions from being discharged- died along with several people in his crew after their aircraft exploded. He was the only crewmate whose body wasn't recovered in the wreckage, and after weeks of being MIA was pronounced dead at the age of 20. In recognition of his service, he was subsequently awarded a Purple Heart, Air Medal, and Oak Cluster, and decades later was inducted into the San Francisco Prep Hall of Fame and Galileo Sports Hall of Fame for his brief, impressive career in baseball.
