The Lumiere Brothers began their career filming in locations relatively close to their home. After becoming comfortable with their instrument they began sending cameramen all over the world to direct films which they would produce. Alexandre Promio was one such cameraman. He witnessed Lumiere's first film show and became deeply interested in moving pictures and was hired as one of the Lumiere Brother's first cinematographers.
Promio traveled to Canada in order to film the Niagara Falls. He created the world's first moving shot when in Venice, Italy he set his camera in a gondola and traveled through the streets in order to capture the surrounding locations. Promio also made what may be world's first "phantom ride" shot when he traveled to Jerusalem and filmed footage on a train as it was leaving a station. Promio also filmed in other locations such as Geneva, New York, and London.

- Hans V. Kaltenborn had some colorful experiences in 1933 at the advent of Hitler becoming Chancellor of Germany and the founding of Nazism there. Being of German descent he may have had a blind admiration for the discipline and precision of the Nazi German youth. He refused to believe reports that the S.A. roughnecks routinely insulted and beat up American visitors to Germany who did not show due regard for their street parades nor lifted their arms in the Nazi salute. His adulation for Nazi Germany came crashing down in 1933 when for failing to stand still and salute the parade he was verbally insulted and his son physically assaulted. He received a rude shock and made a complaint to the American Consulate in Berlin but nothing came of it. This incident is well documented in the book titled In the Garden of Beasts by Erik Larson.

Italian composer who introduced Russian orchestral colour and some of the violence of Richard Strauss's harmonic techniques into Italian music. He studied at the Liceo of Bologna and later with Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov in St. Petersburg, where he was first violist in the Opera Orchestra. From his foreign masters Respighi acquired a command of orchestral colour and an interest in orchestral composition. A piano concerto by Respighi was performed at Bologna in 1902; a "notturno" for orchestra was played at a concert in the Metropolitan Opera House that year. His comic opera Re Enzo and the opera Semirama brought him recognition and an appointment in 1913 to the St. Cecilia Academy in Rome as professor of composition. He became director of the conservatory in 1924 but resigned in 1926. Respighi was drawn to the sensual, decadent climate of the Rome depicted by the poet Gabriele D'Annunzio, and in his celebrated suites--Pini di Roma (Pines of Rome, 1923-24) and Fontane di Roma (Fountains of Rome, 1914-16) especially--he sought to convey the subtlety and colour of the poet's imagination. Other suites include Vetrate di chiesa (Church Windows, 1927); Gli ucelli (The Birds, 1927); Feste Romane (Roman Festivals, 1929); and Trittico Botticelliano (Botticelli Triptych, 1927, for chamber orchestra)- Actor

- Canadian writer Douglas Leader Durkin was born on 9 July 1884 in the small town of Parry Sound on the eastern shore of Georgian Bay, an inlet of Lake Huron in south central Ontario. Early in life he abandoned the notion of becoming a missionary after acquiring an appreciation for literature and in time taught literature at Brandon College, the University of Manitoba and Columbia University.
In 1918 Durkin published a book of poetry entitled "The Fighting Men of Canada". His first two novels, "The Heart of Cherry McBain" (1920) and "The Lobstick Trail" (1921), were dramas set in the rugged terrain of Northern Manitoba. In 1921, after moving to New York, Durkin left his wife and sons and discarded his academic career. It was during this period that he wrote "The Magpie" (1923), a story set in post-war Winnipeg that is considered by some to be his best work.
In 1944, he married his long-time companion; Norwegian-American author Martha Ostenso, whom he had known since she was a high school student in Manitoba. Durkin early on saw her potential as a writer and began to work as her mentor. She later followed Durkin to New York and in time collaborated with him on the writing of her award-winning novel, "Wild Geese" (1925). An earlier work by Durkin was very similar to "Wild Geese" and it is thought that Durkin and Ostenso were afraid that the Dodd Mead First Novel Award committee might have disqualified the book if he was listed as co-author.
Durkin and Ostenso married after his first wife passed away. By then the couple had collaborated on a dozen or so novels and a number of short stories. Durkin and Ostenso lived and worked primarily in Brainerd, Minnesota and in Hollywood, California, where they became friends with such stars as 'Douglas Fairbanks Jr' Mary Pickford' and Henry Fonda. Douglas Durkin passed away on 4 June, 1967 at Seattle. He was survived by two sons from his first marriage.
