Born in Fort Worth, TX, in 1907, Adrienne Ames hit Hollywood in the late 1920s. Although her career only lasted about ten years, she crammed a lot of living into it--high-profile marriages (and divorces) and her reputation as a clothes horse and glamour queen par excellence far outshone her reputation as an actress.
In 1933 she married Bruce Cabot after leaving her second husband, a rich New York City stockbroker, but she and Cabot only lasted four years. In her divorce she told the court that the main reason she left him was that he was a violent, uncontrollable drunk. In 1938 the pair appeared before a US Tax Appeals Board to explain why she wrote off more than $9000 in wardrobe and jewelry on her 1934 tax form, which she claimed was necessary for "professional reasons" (as was her maid). She claimed that her "daily expenses" included flowers, massages, taxis and beauty work.
Her career lasted from 1929-40, during which she appeared in about 30 films, mostly "B" pictures. The best-known of her movies would probably be You're Telling Me! (1934) with W.C. Fields. After her film career ended she worked as a radio commentator.
She died in New York City in 1947 after a long illness.- Actor

Hungarian-born Alexandre Trauner came to Paris in 1929 to escape the anti-semitic Horty regime in his native country, and to paint. Instead, he became involved in the film industry as an assistant to the famous art director Lazare Meerson. Influenced by cubism and impressionism, he embraced the intellectual freedom in the French capital and branched out into architecture, even fashion design and tapestry. However, by the mid-30s, Trauner had worked his way up to being a motion picture production designer in his own right. He became part of a famous collaboration with the director Marcel Carné, writer Jacques Prevert and composers Joseph Kosma and Maurice Jaubert on a number of seminal French films, including Hotel du Nord (1938) and Le Jour Se Leve (1939). Trauner's meticulously researched, intricate studio sets evocatively captured not only the virile, romantic atmosphere of Paris boulevards and canals (Children of Paradise (1945) and Gates of the Night (1946)), but also a fog-enshrouded Le Havre (Port of Shadows (1938)) and a windswept Brittany coastline (Remorques (1941)).
Post-war, and having gained international recognition, Trauner became much sought-after by Hollywood directors with European assignments. His next famous partnership was with Billy Wilder who invited him to come to the U.S. where Trauner was subsequently based. He travelled to the Congo, detailing Sister Luke's hardships for Fred Zinnemann's The Nun's Story (1959), then worked on some of Wilder's best films during the next few years, creating the effective, lived-in ambiance of The Apartment (1960) and the stark cold war atmosphere of divided Berlin for One, Two, Three (1961). After that, he was back in action as art director on another romantic Parisian melodrama, Anatole Litvak's charming and moody Goodbye Again (1961). Demonstrating his versatility, he created impressive visuals of war-torn Warsaw (filmed on location) for The Night of the Generals (1967); built the most sumptuous of Victorian sets at Pinewood, replete with equally opulent Baker Street interiors, for Wilder's The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (1970); and summoned an exotic vision of the fictional kingdom of Kafiristan for John Huston's cracking adventure yarn, The Man Who Would Be King (1975). Coming full circle, Trauner wound down his distinguished career back in France, with a darker view of Paris via the Metro and its inhabitants, in Subway (1985). He created a near-perfect replica of the Paris Blue Note Club and New York's Birdland at Studio Clair (in the Parisian suburb of Epinay-sur-Seine) for the most compelling of jazz films, 'Round Midnight (1986).
For a man who enjoyed one of the longest careers in French cinema, Trauner remained remarkably self-effacing, even after winning his Oscar (for 'The Apartment') and three Cesar Awards. He attributed much of his success to invention, and to not necessarily sticking to reality, but to be continuously "new and surprising".- Alexis Smith was born on 3 August 1997 in Shreveport, Louisiana, USA.

Born in San Francisco's Castro District, Allen Holubar was the first of five children of Constantin Josef Holubar and Margaret Allen C. Holubar, who immigrated from Bohemia in 1875 and married Margaret, a Scots woman, in San Francisco (Allen was born at 44 Caselli Ave. in a house that still stands). Despite parental pressures to be a machinist, Allen worked his way up from sweeping floors to acting, starting at the Alcazar & Alhambra Theatres in San Francisco. He was evidently a prominent dramatic actor, known widely across the US from 1908-1912. However, in the words of a San Francisco newspaper at the time, "He forsook legitimate drama for the moving picture screen" in 1913. After starring in several landmark films, he began directing and was one of Carl Laemmle's first directors at Universal Pictures. Later, after having differences with Laemmle, he founded his own production company, Allen Holubar Pictures, in 1917.
As an up-and-coming producer, he was famous for being the first to coordinate a movie shoot (Hurricane's Gal (1922)) using radio. In the words of a local paper, "Mr. Holubar has successfully performed the unprecedented task of using the wireless waves to direct the movements of an airship, a destroyer and a schooner, maneuvering all of these within his camera's range as he supervised these activities from a hydroplane far above."
He died of postoperative complications from gallstone surgery at the height of his career in 1923. His wife, the former actress Dorothy Phillips, did not act again until the mid-'60s, when she played an old woman in Cat Ballou (1965), starring Lee Marvin and Jane Fonda.- Visual Effects
