He died on 6 November 1887 in Paris, France.- Rutherford Birchard Hayes was one of that small legion of political non-entities who have occupied the post of President and First Magistrate of the Republic since Andrew Jackson, though he was a better man than most. Born on October 4, 1822, in Delaware, Ohio, the former Civil War general served a single term in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1865 and 1867 and then served as Governor of Ohio from 1868 to 1872 and from 1876 to 1877, when he surrendered that office for the presidency. He won the Republican nomination in 1876 because reform-minded Republicans blocked the bid of former President Ulysses S. Grant, whose two terms in office had been marked by unprecedented political corruption, for a non-consecutive third term.
He won the nickname "Rutherfraud" for winning election as the 19th President of the United States by being virtually appointed by an electoral commission adjudicating the disputed 1876 election. (The commission made a deal granting the Republicans the presidency in return for the Democrats' request to end Reconstruction in the former Confederate States. The deal damned black freedmen to quasi-slavery for nearly 100 more years.) It was an electoral anomaly that wouldn't be repeated until 2000, when the right-wing Rhenquist Court virtually anointed GOP contender George W. Bush president, not even going through the motions that the pols of the Bicentennial Year did 124 years earlier.
Hayes proved to be a decent if not spectacular president, committed to civil service reform and cleaning out government corruption. He had little taste for the pretensions of the presidency, saying, "The Presidential mania makes mad every man who is at all prominent in Washington. It never seemed to me worth the cost of self-respect, of independence." He did not stand for reelection in 1880.

While waiting for a train to an engagement, he noticed a passing freight with a number of cars labelled Formby, the name of a small town for which they were bound. Booth liked the sound of the name, added George & became George Formby star of the British Music Halls. The same year that he began his career, he met & married Eliza Hoy who bore him a son in 1904 who took the name of George Hoy. Formby made his first recordings in 1907 but, unlike other Music Hall stars of the day, he found no trouble in performing for just the microphone & no audience. He even conversed with the microphone as if it were a living person.
In 1914, he made his only screen appearance in 'No Fool Like an Old Fool' & the following years his son made his screen début in 'By the Shortest of Heads' as George Formby Jnr. Formby was plagued with ill health early in life which led to one of his opening lines, 'I'm coughing better today' & 'It's not the coughin' that carries you off, it's the coffin they carry you off in!' Few people were aware that he had been stricken with consumption. In 1920, while performing in a Xmas pantomime in Newcastle, George Formby collapsed. He was taken to his hôme in Warrington where he died on February 8, 1921. He was survived by his wife & son. - Music Department

Spanish character actor Luis Alberni was born on October 4, 1886 in Cataluna Barcelona, Spain. His mother's maiden name was Malo, and his father was Judge John Alberni. Luis attended the University of Madrid and majored in Law. Bored with the prospects of long-winded trials, he ran away from home and joined a traveling circus in the south of France as a clown. It was around this time that he discovered his calling and began to get involved in acting. Intent on portraying dramatic characters, while acting in a Shakespearean play (Hamlet), the audience laughed and went hysterical. Due to the recognition he received, it was then that he decided to become a comedian.
In 1914 he emigrated to the United States on board a ship as a steerage passenger and soon went on a traveling road show. Around 1919, he met and married a drawling debutante named Charlotte Hall. Eventually they had three sons together - John, Luis, and Carlos. Around 1938 while still married, he started seeing a blonde from Texas. He soon got divorced from Mrs. Charlotte and married that blonde; she would turn out to be his last wife, Wanda Wilson. Despite having a very tumultuous marriage, they managed to stay together throughout the remainder of his life. They had no children, but Wanda's grand-babies looked to Luis as a grandfather. Around his early to mid-seventies, Luis lived in a home for the elderly devoted to actors, the Motion Picture Television Fund in Woodland Hills most of whom were from the Screen Actors guild or Masquers club. Luis passed away on December 23, 1962 and was buried at Pierce Brothers Valhalla Memorial Park in North Hollywood, California.

At twenty-one, Irish playwright Lennox Robertson's long association with Dublin's Abbey Theatre began in 1907 shortly after the production of his first play, "The Clancy Name". In intervals over the next fifty years he would serve as the theatre's manager, director and producer. Robertson had also worked as a secretary to playwright George Bernard Shaw, general manager of the Irish National Theatre Society, organizing librarian for the Carnegie Trust in Ireland and as a government official.
Robertson made several trips to America with the Abbey Theatre Irish Players performing such plays of his as "The Far-Off Hills", "Crabbed Youth and Age", "The Big House", "Is Life Worth Living" and "Drama at Inish". His play "Ever the Twain" was actually set in New York and was considered by many as a wonderful satirical interpretation of the American lifestyle.
While in America Robertson gave lecture courses on the history and origins of Irish poetry at the Carnegie Institute of Technology, Amherst College, the Universities of Montana, North Carolina, Michigan and Ohio State University,
Lennox Robertson is probably best remembered for his plays "The White-Headed Boy" and "The Lost Leader". At the time of his death he was working as co-editor of "The Oxford Book of Irish Verses".- Cinematographer
