Ahmet Kaya (28 October 1957 - 16 November 2000) was a Kurdish singer from Malatya, Turkey. He identified himself as a Kurd of Turkey. Some of his most popular songs include "Kurduz Olene Kadar" (Kurdish Until Death) Ayrilik Vakti, Söyle, Agladikça, Oy Benim Canim, Birazdan Kudurur Deniz, Arka Mahalle, Kum Gibi, Nereden Bileceksiniz, Hani Benim Gençligim, Yakarim Geceleri and Safak Türküsü.
Ahmet Kaya was the fifth and last child born to his father, a Kurd who had moved from Adiyaman to Malatya. He first encountered music at the age of six. Ahmet Kaya worked for a while as a taxicab driver in Istanbul before becoming a famous singer in the mid-1980s. His first album, "Aglama Bebegim", was released in 1985. His popularity continued to rise into the 1990s when in 1994 he released the album "Sarkilarim Daglara" which sold a record copies. All of his 1990 albums became chart-toppers. During his career he recorded approximately 20 albums and was known for his protest music and positions on social justice. Recurring themes in his songs are love towards one's mother, sacrifice, and hope.
On 10 February 1999 during the televised annual music awards ceremony, Show TV, at which he was to be named Musician of the Year, Kaya said that he wanted to produce music in his native language, as he was of Kurdish background. He also announced that he had recorded a song in Kurdish (Karwan, released on the "Hosçakalin Gözüm" album in 2001) and intended to produce a video to accompany it.
Following this announcement, he faced massive opposition from Turkish people and celebrities in the event. First, Serdar Ortaç started singing a song with modified lyrics to boost nationalist feelings, then people in the ceremony started singing 10th Year March. Later, Kaya was attacked by celebrities. Kaya's wife describes the attack as "All of a sudden, all of those chic women and men, they all turned into monsters, grabbing forks and knives and throwing them at us, insulting, booing. Imagine the atmosphere changing in just five minutes, almost a Kafkaesque transformation."
The incident led to a prosecution case which made him leave Turkey. Kaya went to France in June 1999, escaping various charges arising from his political views. In March 2000 he was sentenced in absentia to three years and nine months in prison on the charge of spreading separatist propaganda. Later, however, the mass media allegation showing Kaya in front of the poster was proven to be forged. He died from a heart attack in Paris in 2000, at the age of 43, and is buried in Père Lachaise Cemetery. Many believe that because of longing to his country he had health problems and therefore had a heart attack.- Ai Yoshikawa was born on 28 October 1999 in Tokyo, Japan. Liverpool native Alan Clarke got his start in the film business in Canada, where he studied acting and directing. Upon returning to England he got a job at ITV, then moved over to the BBC in 1969. He worked mostly in television, but he made a couple of feature films that got attention for their portrayal of the gritty and occasionally violent life of the British working class, notably Scum (1979) and Rita, Sue and Bob Too (1987), about aimless, sex-obsessed teenagers in a housing project. Another of his slice-of-life films was the hard-hitting made-for-TV movie Made in Britain (1982), with an early performance by Tim Roth as a violent, racist skinhead.

- Oscar-nominated screenwriter Albert Maltz was born on October 28, 1908 in Brooklyn, New York. After graduating from Columbia University in 1930, he attended the Yale School of Drama for two years as a tyro playwright. After striking out on his own as a dramatist, he developed sociopolitical plays which were destined to be produced by the left-wing theatrical companies the Theatre Union and the Group Theatre. He also wrote novels and short stories. In 1935, during the Great Depression, he joined the Communist Party.
Maltz labored as a screenwriter for Warner Bros., which had made its reputation in the 1930s for its socially aware dramas. He worked on the classic Casablanca (1942) and other feature films and documentaries during World War II. He wrote the Oscar-winning documentary The House I Live In (1945), a plea for racial tolerance, and was nominated for an Oscar for writing Pride of the Marines (1945).
Maltz wrote an article in 1945 for the "New Masses" that demanded more intellectual freedom from the Communist Party for its members. Pressure from the Party made him recant his position, which had a chilling effect on some other Party members and liberal supporters of the Party's right to exist.
In 1947, Maltz and other Party members (and suspected Party members and sympathizers) were called before the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) which had determined to investigate "communist infiltration" of the movie industry. Maltz and nine others were cited for contempt of Congress for their uncooperative behavior before the Committee, which included not "naming names" of other communists, and were dubbed the "Hollywood 10". All were fined and jailed, and they were also blacklisted by the American film industry.
Remaining a committed communist, Maltz continued to write, using "fronts" who sold his screenplays and received any writing credit alloted by the studios and WGA. He remained unrepentant about his progressive politics until the end, which came on August 26, 1985 when he died in Los Angeles at the age of 76. - Director

Alfred Grant was one of the most suave, talented actors of Black Cinema and Golden Era Hollywood. He had quite a powerful presence on screen. He was the tough, macho type but still romantic and had a softness that the female movie-watchers loved. He could play any role there was and had an actor's voice if ever there was one; powerful, distinct, soothing and convincing.
Grant displayed his natural talent in the Black Cinema films of the 1930s and 1940s. He starred in "Reform School," "One Dark Night," "Mystery In Swing," "Son of Ingagi," and "Am I Guilty? where Alfred proved himself a wonderful leading actor and gave excellent performances. Black Cinema a.k.a race films gave Alfred plenty of opportunities that he took advantage of to display his art. He made many films watchable by himself alone even if the story and the cast weren't as good. Alfred was in quite a few films in Hollywood but parts were hard to come by for Black actors. The roles he did attain in Hollywood were quite an accomplishment because he got a chance to be a real actor not a stereotype which was rare for a Black actor then. Alfred left lasting impressions in Hollywood films, "Golden Boy," "One Hour To Live," "You'll Never Get Rich," "The Vanishing Virgirian" and "The Well." Alfred also appeared on television in an episode of "Soldiers of Fortune." Grant is truly one of the unsung Black actors of cinema who proved the myths and stereotypes about Black men wrong. Hopefully more information will surface on this talented actor.- Alfredo Nagib was born on 28 October 1909 in São Paulo, SP, Brazil.
