Shokat Harjo, an actor and filmmaker from northern Syria, draws deep inspiration from the rugged landscapes and rich cultural fabric of his homeland. Affectionately known as "Asal" since childhood, a nod to his striking honey-colored eyes, his journey into storytelling began at just 9 years old when he immersed himself in James Bond movies to teach himself English.
The Syrian Civil War left an enduring mark on Harjo, deeply wounded by ISIS gunfire and abruptly uprooted from his home. Seeking refuge in Norway in 2015, he embarked on a path of rebuilding his life and reigniting his creative spirit.
Fuelled by a passionate drive to amplify voices often overlooked in mainstream narratives, Harjo garnered critical acclaim in 2021 with 'Gritt' and 'Edderkoppen', both poignant explorations of cultural intersections in Norwegian contexts.
In 2021, he established "Honning Film" to champion diversity in filmmaking. His stage debut in 2022 at The Norwegian Theatre marked a pivotal moment in his career.
By 2023, Harjo demonstrated his versatility with roles in "I Walked Alone" and Netflix's "Billionaire Island", complementing his work as writer, director, and producer of "Last Stop" and the play "Hol" at The Norwegian Theatre.
Looking ahead, Harjo remains dedicated to shaping Norway's cultural landscape through compelling and impactful storytelling, driven by his own journey of resilience and creativity.
