Al Gordon was born in Akron, Ohio in 1923 but moved to The Bronx as a child. He was the middle of three children, with an older brother and a younger sister. After finishing high school, Al joined the Air Corps and spent time on bases throughout the US before moving to Tersiera. A plane of entertainers arrived at his station, and several of the men in the barrack were writers. As they labored on a Broadway-bound show, APO Zoot, Al offered writing ideas and suggestions. One year later, these same writers flew Al to Hollywood, where he got his start as a radio writer for Jack Benny. From the time he started until he retired in the early 1990's, Al was employed every single television season. His knack for quick thinking, combined with his partner's speedy typing, powered his career in sitcoms. A pioneer in entertainment, Al won three Primetime Emmys and received nine nominations in his lifetime. Al was married to Charlotte Berkus (who was a first cousin twice removed to Nate Berkus) until her death in 2008. In the last eight years of her life, Al was her constant companion through a battle with Alzheimer's disease. They had two children: director/producer Neil Gordon and writer Jill Gordon. - Ara Parseghian is an American football player and coach who guided the University of Notre Dame to national championships in 1966 and 1973. He is noted for bringing Notre Dame Fighting Irish football program from years of futility back into a national contender in 1964 and is widely regarded alongside Knute Rockne and Frank Leahy as a part of the 'Holy Trinity' of Notre Dame head coaches.
Parseghian grew up in Akron, Ohio, and played football beginning in his junior year of high school. He enrolled at the University of Akron, but soon quit to join the U.S. Navy for two years during World War II. After the war, he finished his college career at Miami University in Ohio, and went on to play halfback for the Cleveland Browns of the All-America Football Conference in 1948 and 1949. Cleveland won the league championship both of those years.
Parseghian's playing career was cut short by a hip injury. He left the Browns and took a job as an assistant coach at Miami of Ohio. When head coach Woody Hayes left in 1951 to coach at Ohio State University, Parseghian took over his job. He stayed in that position until 1956, when he was hired as head coach at Northwestern University in Illinois. In eight seasons there, he amassed a win-loss-tie record of 36-35-1 and helped turn a perennial loser into a consistent contender in the national polls. Parseghian's success attracted the interest of Notre Dame, which had not posted a winning record in five straight seasons. He was hired as coach in 1964 and quickly turned the program around, coming close to capturing a national championship in his first year. He proceeded to win two national titles in 11 seasons as coach of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, a period often referred to as 'the Era of Ara'. He never had a losing season at Notre Dame and posted an overall record of 95-17-4, giving him the third-most wins of any coach in school history after Rockne and Lou Holtz.
Parseghian retired from coaching in 1974 and began a broadcasting career calling college football games for ABC and CBS. He also dedicated himself to medical causes later in life after his daughter was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and three of his grandchildren died of a rare genetic disease. Parseghian was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach in 1980. His career coaching record is 170-58-6. - Art Arfons was born on 3 February 1926 in Akron, Ohio, USA. The name which could have been synonymous with Steven Spielberg. Perhaps in a parallel dimension, but as things would turn out, not this one. Packard grew up in a rural district of Akron. His father Ray Packard was a professor of fine arts and highly regarded artist/collector/gallery-owner of Akron. The Packard Gallery on W. Exchange St was a well known staple in the 60s & 70s, with its statue of Minerva and three Packard automobiles parked in front, art collectors and other notable clientele (which included Orson Welles) had frequented the place. Packard's mother Francis was a stage and commercial actress of Akron whose career was cut short by her passing from a strange illness in 1968. It can be noted that she had almost married the actor Kier Dullea a few years earlier. Packard spent his later early years growing up in Chatsworth, California and began making experimental films in 1979 at the age of 11, the first of which were a series of animated and stop motion shorts, some made for school credit. In the early 80s Packard embarked on a series of ambitious productions (Amazing Stories, The Afterlife, Werewolf Hunters, etc) the prior mentioned preceded, but had no direct connection with the mid-80s Spielberg TV series. He now resides in a small cheap rented room in Eagle Rock, California, destitute, debased, and devoid of future projects.- Dan Argenas was born on 26 May 1952 in Akron, Ohio, USA. Dan is a producer, known for The Saga of Saint Nick: Nicholas of Myra - Part II and Nicholas of Myra: The Story of Saint Nicholas.
