As a young actor in a small traveling Kabuki group, he was discovered by Makino Shozo and made his debut as the main character in Goban Tadanobu in 1909. Later he acted in parts both as a hero and kyokyaku (a professional gambler in the Edo period, often romanticized as a chivalrous 'Robin Hood' figure) one after another, and he also performed most of the main characters in the bestsellers of the time, Tachikawa paperbacks. Ninja films were also discovered by Matsunosuke, and he was given the nickname "Medama no Matchan" due to his very large eyes. He became very popular with children who would imitate the ninja moves they had seen in his films. Matusnosuke is said to have created over 80 films a year during his prime years and made over 1,000 films in total. However, the only films that are preserved today are Chushingura (1910), Goketsu Jiraiya (1921) and Shibukawa Bangoro (1922). Matsunosuke collapsed during the filming of Kyokotsu Mikazuki in 1926, and died of heart disease on 11 September that year.- Director

Called the "father of Japanese film," Shozo Makino was a director during the pioneer days of Japanese film, and was also a producer and business executive. Makino was born in Kyoto on September 22, 1878. His mother ran a theater, and his association with movies began when the motion picture fan, Naganosuke Yokota, asked for his help when filming a drama. Shozo had an eye for talent and discovered Matsunosuke Onoe working in an itinerant kabuki troupe. He enlisted Onoe and made him into Japan's first film star, directing 60 to 80 Matsunosuke films a year. In addition to creating the unique genre of the Japanese period film, he applied trick camera techniques and a myriad of other cinematic methods of expression. In 1919, he started the Mikado Company and began to produce educational films. He founded an independent production company, Makino Film Productions, in 1923, where he continued his work as a director and also displayed his talents as a producer. Makino Film Productions turned out numerous outstanding movies made by excellent directors and actors. In 1928, he directed the epic, Jitsuroku Chushingura (True Record of the Forty-seven Ronin), released on the occasion of his 50th birthday. In 1929, Makino died of heart failure. - Sawamura was born in 1877 in Tokyo. He studied under Takasagoya Fukusuke, making his first stage performance in the Osaka Nakaza Theater. In 1911 he was promoted to the ranks of the named actors, and in 1914 he succeeded to the name of Sawamura Shirogoro V at the Teikoku Theater. That same year he was invited to join Tenkatsu along with Ichikawa Enjuro. The name of both of these actors began to spread after their appearance in the 1916 film Ninjutsu Sanyushi. They went on to appear together in films such as Saiyuki (Diary of a Westward Journey) and Jitsuroku Hagi, and it is said that of the two, Sawamura Shirogoro was slightly more popular with the public due to his oval face and his flashiness. Sawamura became an idol of the youth during his Tenkatsu and Nikkatsu days. In the autumn of 1921 Sawamura joined Shochiku, where he starred in Kanzaki Kanninbukuro. After Ichikawa Enjuro and the rest returned to Kokukatsu, they parted ways, and the line up was never seen again.
Most of the films in which Sawamura starred were directed by Yoshino Jiro, and some of the later ones by Mori Kaname and Kako Zanmu, but the film Nichiren Komachi was directed by and starred Sawamura himself. After a final performance in Kedanimura Rokusuke, Sawamura retired from acting, dying in 1932 from an illness. Sawamura Shirogoro was second only to Onoe Matsunosuke as a leading star of the early days of the early days of Japanese cinema. - Writer
