The Lumiere Brothers began their career filming in locations relatively close to their home. After becoming comfortable with their instrument they began sending cameramen all over the world to direct films which they would produce. Alexandre Promio was one such cameraman. He witnessed Lumiere's first film show and became deeply interested in moving pictures and was hired as one of the Lumiere Brother's first cinematographers.
Promio traveled to Canada in order to film the Niagara Falls. He created the world's first moving shot when in Venice, Italy he set his camera in a gondola and traveled through the streets in order to capture the surrounding locations. Promio also made what may be world's first "phantom ride" shot when he traveled to Jerusalem and filmed footage on a train as it was leaving a station. Promio also filmed in other locations such as Geneva, New York, and London.
Promio later worked for the french Pathe Freres company, in 1907, and between 1914 and 1915 he also was a soldier as part of the first world's war. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry was born into a family of old provincial nobility. Failing his final exams at a preparatory school, he entered the École des Beaux-Arts to study architecture. In 1921, he began military service in the 2nd Regiment of Chasseurs, and sent to Strasbourg for pilot training. The next year, he obtained his license, and was offered a transfer to the air force. But his fiancée's family objected, so he settled in Paris and took an office job. His engagement ultimately broke off, and he worked at several jobs over the next few years without success.
By 1926, he was flying again. He became one of the pioneers of international postal flight in the days when aircrafts had few instruments and pilots flew by the seat of their pants. He worked on the Aéropostale between Toulouse and Dakar. His first tale, L'Aviateur (The Aviator), was published in the magazine Le Navire d'Argent. In 1928, he published his first book, Courrier-Sud (Southern Mail), and flew the Casablanca/Dakar route. He became the director of Cap Juby airfield in Rio de Oro, Sahara. In 1929, he moved to South America where he was appointed director of the Aeroposta Argentina Company. In 1931, Vol de Nuit (Night Flight), which won the Prix Femina, was published. He married Salvadoran artist and writer Consuelo Suncin Sandoval de Gómez, who became the model for the temperamental Rose in Le Petit Prince. Theirs was a stormy union as Saint-Exupéry traveled frequently and indulged in numerous affairs.
During World War II, he was in New York City, but returned to France to join a squadron based in the Mediterranean. Now 44, he agreed to collect data on German troop movements in the Rhone River Valley. He took off the night of July 31, 1944, and was never seen again. A lady reported having seen a plane crash around noon on August 1st near the Bay of Carqueiranne. A body wearing a French uniform was found several days later, and buried. In 1998, a fisherman found a silver chain bracelet south of Marseille which was identified as being Saint-Exupéry's. On April 7, 2004, officials confirmed that the wreckage of a Lockheed Lightning P-38 found on the seabed off the coast of Marseille in 2000 was Saint-Exupéry's.
Further research in 2006 by the dive team which recovered the wreckage located a German pilot who was flying a mission at the Bay of Carqueiranne at the time Saint-Exupéry's plane went down. Horst Rippert acknowledged that he shot at the plane, but did not report it, possibly because he was not sure he actually downed it. When the Germans heard American radio broadcasts that Saint-Exupéry was missing, Rippert said he knew that the plane he downed was his. Rippert idolized Saint-Exupéry, read all his books, and had been bothered by the incident his whole life. He told the dive team he would not have shot at the plane had he known it was Saint-Exupéry's.- Actor

- Georges Grey, sometimes credited as George Grey, was born as Jean-Joseph-Georges Gacon in Lyon, France in 1911. He made his film debut in a bit part as a young Hungarian in Sacha Guitry's Les perles de la couronne/The Pearls of the Crown (1937). The following year, Grey played a much larger role as a charming Hollywood matinee idol in Paris in Guitry's Quadrille/ 2 x 2 = 4 (1938, Sacha Guitry), in which he gained additional attention in a non full-frontal nude scene. Guitry cast him again as a prince in Remontons les Champs-Élysées/Let us go back to the Champs Elysees (1938, Sacha Guitry) and in another supporting part in Ils étaient neuf célibataires/Nine Bachelors (1939, Sacha Guitry).
Although Grey was obviousl;y a favorite of Guitry's, he also worked as well as with several other directors. He appeared in Narcisse (1940, Ayres d'Aguiar) featuring Rellys, Monsieur Hector/Mr. Hector (1940, Maurice Cammage) starring Fernandel, and La fille du puisatier/The Well-Digger's Daughter (1940, Marcel Pagnol) with Raimu. About the latter, James Travers writes at Films de France: "La Fille du puisatier may not be Marcel Pagnol's greatest film - indeed a less generous reviewer would write it off as a bland rehash of the director's previous Angèle (1934) - but it does assume some historical significance by dint of the fact that it documents France's capitulation to Nazi Germany more or less as it was happening. Work on the film began in May 1940 but was suspended in June at the height of the debacle. Filming resumed in August after France's surrender and the establishment of the Vichy government."
Grey then played a gypsy in Cartacalha, reine des gitans/Cartacalha, Queen of the Gypsies (1942, Léon Mathot) starring Viviane Romance. He reunited with Guitry for Le destin fabuleux de Désirée Clary/Mlle. Desiree (1942, Sacha Guitry) featuring Gaby Morlay as a girlfriend of Napoleon. The following year, he played the second lead in the comedy Adémaï bandit d'honneur/Adémaï Bandit of Honor (1943) starring Noël-Noël. The film was produced by Les Prisonniers Associés, a company created by recently released prisoners of war; he was not seen on screen again until 1946 in another supporting part in Monsieur Grégoire s'évade/Mr. Gregoire Runs Away (1946, Jacques Daniel-Norman) with Bernard Blier. He finally had his first leading role in the comedy Tierce à coeur/Third at heart (1947, Jacques de Casembroot), but it was not a success. He reunited with Guitry again for a supporting part in Le comédien/The Private Life of an Actor (1948, Sacha Guitry). This was a lovingly told biography of Guitry's father, stage comedian and silent film actor Lucien Guitry. It was followed by another part for Guitry in the historical extravaganza Le diable boiteux/The Lame Devil (1948, Sacha Guitry). Grey's final film was the drama La ferme des sept péchés/The Farm of Seven Sins (1949, Jean-Devaivre) with Jacques Dumesnil. Five years later, he died in a sanatorium in Passy, France in 1954. Georges Grey was only 43. - Costume Designer

French playwright, screenwriter, and actor. born Marcel-Auguste Ferréol in Sainte-Foylès-Lyon (Rhône) on July 5, 1899. The circumstances of his birth are both uncertain and unusual. At one point, Achard stated as fact that ""I was born thanks to a special authorization from the Pope and the President of the Republic: my father had married the daughter of his sister, so that my grandfather was, at the same time, my great-grandfather; my father, my great-uncle; and my mother, my cousin." As a teenager during the First World War, he became a schoolteacher. By 20, he was a prompter at the famous Parisian Théâtre du Vieux-Colombier and then a journalist for La Figaro. He began writing for the stage at 22 and had immediate success when theatrical manager Charles Dullin staged Achard's Voulez-vous jouer avec moâ? at the Atelier. Achard quickly became a very popular playwright, most of his works derived from traditions of the Commedia del'Arte. Although frequently criticized for the dreamy, romantic quality of his most popular works, Achard did stretch those boundaries. His play Adam was a controversial and realistic look at the life of a homosexual man, and though the play was scandalous for its time, it has been revived frequently in more recent times and seen as a powerful exposé. His 1962 comedy L'Idiote was transferred to the screen as the Blake Edwards-Peter Sellers hit A Shot in the Dark. Achard had several plays produced on Broadway, though only two (I Know My Love and A Shot in the Dark, adapted by S.N. Behrman and Harry Kurnitz, respectively) were hits. Throughout his career as a playwright, Achard also wrote screenplays and acted in films. His best-known screenplay, probably, was for the 1936 version of Mayerling. Although he had done some directing in collaboration with other directors, Achard successfully directed his first solo film, La Valse de Paris, a biography of Offenbach, in 1949. He served as head of the Cannes and Venice Film festivals during the period of 1958-1960. Elected late in life to the Académie française, Achard died from complications of diabetes at 75, in Paris, on September 4, 1974. His wife Lily survived him.- This stunning, fragile starlet was born Henriette Michèle Leone Girardon in Lyon in August 1938. Having completed her acting studies at the local conservatoire she won a competition as "the most photogenic girl in France" by the age of twenty. Photo shoots followed and a minor career as a model with appearances on the cover of prestige magazines "Vogue" and ""Marie-Claire". She began on screen with prominent supporting roles as a deaf mute in Luis Buñuel's Death in the Garden (1956) and as a secretary in Louis Malle's The Lovers (1958). Her first starring role came courtesy of Éric Rohmer who cast her in the lead of Sign of the Lion (1962) -- one of the first films of the French Nouvelle Vague movement, shot on location in Paris. Though not a commercial success at the time, the acting received general praise throughout and Michèle attracted attention from Hollywood. Paramount approached her with an offer to appear as the owner of a Tanzanian game farm opposite John Wayne in the African adventure Hatari! (1962). According to a Life magazine profile of July 1961 Michèle 'taught herself English' on the set. Her role did not lead to a Hollywood contract. Nevertheless, for a while she remained in demand for European productions, the pick of the bunch being leads in the Spanish-made swashbuckler The Adventures of Scaramouche (1963) and the Italian comedy The Magnificent Cuckold (1964). Less high profile, but decidedly decorative, was her supporting role in the Franco-Italian "Alfie'-lookalike comedy Tender Scoundrel (1966).
By the early 70's, film offers had dried up and Michèle's career was seriously on the skids. She became increasingly despondent, especially after the end of an unhappy dalliance with a married Spanish aristocrat, José Luis de Vilallonga (a writer and occasional actor with a well-earned reputation as a cad and spendthrift). Michèle Girardon decided to end her life by ingesting an overdose of sleeping pills in her home town on March 25, 1975, aged just 36. In a tragic irony, two co-stars in Michèle's penultimate film Les petites filles modèles (1971), Marie-Georges Pascal and Bella Darvi, also committed suicide at the ages of 39 and 42, respectively. - Simone Berteaut was born on 29 May 1918 in Lyon, Rhône, France.
