Songwriter ("What a Difference a Day Made", "Ti-Pi-Tin"), composer, singer and pianist, educated in private music study. Maria Grever made a number of concert tours (chiefly in Latin America) and wrote special material for film performers and concert singers. Other popular-song compositions included "Jurame", "Lamento Gitano", "Lero, Lero from Brazil", "Magic Is the Moonlight", "Make Love With a Guitar", and "My First, My Last, My Only".- Magdalena Carmen Frieda Kahlo y Calderon was born on July 6, 1907 in Mexico City, Mexico. She was the seventh daughter of Guillermo Kahlo (born Carl Wilhelm Kahlo), a successful German photographer who emigrated to Mexico from Pforzheim, and of a mestiza mother, Matilde Calderón y González. Her father encouraged her interest in art, photography and archaeology; her mother was not so well educated, and also very religious.
At the age of 6, Frida suffered an attack of poliomyelitis, which left her with a deformed leg, although exercise and determination helped her to make a good recovery. At 14, she enrolled into one of Mexico's best schools hoping to forge a career in medicine; however, on September 17, 1925, she suffered serious injury in a traffic accident in Mexico City, breaking her spinal column and pelvis in three places, as well as her collar bone and two ribs. Her right leg, already deformed by polio, was shattered and fractured in 11 places and her right foot was dislocated. Frida spent the next month in hospital, and another 2 months at home recuperating, followed by 32 operations during her life-time. Her first prolonged hospitalization gave her the opportunity to rethink her life and become a painter, in spite of constant pain and discomfort.
She met her future husband, painter Diego Rivera, when he painted a mural at her school in 1923; they re-met in 1927 and began an affair. Although her mother objected to Frida dating Diego mostly because of their age differences (he was exactly 20 years older) and their awkward appearance together (she was 5' 3" tall and weighed only 100 lbs, he was 6' and weighed nearly 300 lbs), they were married in a traditional Catholic civil ceremony in 1929.
Melancholia, illness, separation, divorce, and re-marriage marked their relationship; Diego Rivera was a womanizer and their marriage was stormy. Frustrated by his philandering, Frida (a closet lesbian/bisexual) had affairs with both men and women, including a fling with exiled Russian revolutionary Lev Trotskiy in 1938. Her career as an artist was highly successful and took her around Mexico, New York and Europe.
Frida and Diego divorced early in 1940, and soon after, Frida's health deteriorated. Her moderate to heavy drinking, chain-smoking, and a steady diet of candy exacerbated her infirmity. In the early 1930s, she developed an atrophic ulcer on her right foot, from which several gangrenous toes were amputated in 1934.
Frida and Diego Rivera reconciled and were re-married on his 54th birthday, in December 1940, in San Francisco, California. Following the amputation of her right leg in 1953, Frida became a recluse and more deeply depressed, finally losing the will to live. She was found dead at home in Mexico City on July 13, 1954, allegedly from kidney, liver and heart failure, although some believe she committed suicide by taking an overdose of pills. - Carlos Sánchez Hurtado was born on 28 January 1907 in Mexico City, Distrito Federal, Mexico. Born in Mexican revolution times, Pedro Armendáriz was the first child of Mexican Pedro Armendáriz García-Conde and American Adele Hastings. He was raised in Churubusco, then a suburb of Mexico City, before the family traveled to Laredo, Texas. They lived there until 1921, the year Armendáriz' parents died. His uncle Francisco took charge of his education, and young Pedro went to the Polytechnic Institute of San Luis Obispo, California. There, he studied business and journalism. He graduated in 1931 and returned to Mexico City where he found work as a railroad employee, insurance salesman and tourist guide. He was discovered by director Miguel Zacarías when Armendáriz was reciting Hamlet's monologue (to be or not to be) to an American tourist in a cafeteria.
After that, Armendáriz began a brilliant career in Mexico, the United States and Europe. Together with Dolores Del Río and Emilio Fernández, Armendáriz made many of the greatest films in the so-called Mexican Cinema Golden Era: Wild Flower (1943), Bugambilia (1945), Maria Candelaria (1944), among others. He was considered a prototype of masculinity and male beauty. His green eyes and almost perfect features made him perfectly cast in any role he made. But it was his passion, force and acting abilities, combined with his quality of a gentleman what made him an instant favorite of great directors like John Ford, international costars like María Félix, Sean Connery or Susan Hayward, and his fans in Mexico and other countries.- Actor

Salvatore Santaella was born on 12 September 1896 in Mexico City, Distrito Federal, Mexico. He died on 11 January 1964 in Los Angeles, California, USA.- Pina Pellicer was, and still is, one of the most beloved Mexican actresses of all time. She set a standard for realism in a time when "melodrama" and "artificial" acting still ran rampant. She was best known for her groundbreaking performance in One-Eyed Jacks (1961) with Marlon Brando. She is greatly missed. Fans still wonder why she left us so soon. Perhaps next of kin will continue her magnificent tradition.

Javier Solis was the third child of a poor family. His mother sent him to live with his aunt and uncle Sra. Angela Lopez Martinez and Sr. Valentin Levario Plata, whom Gabriel felt great love and affection for as if they were his real parents. Because of their poverty, he had to drop out of school and never had the opportunity to attend High School. He was blessed with a very beautiful voice, and entered many singing contests as a child and won most all of them. He worked at many different jobs in order to help his family. When he was 16 years old, he traveled to Puebla in order to sing with a group known as Mariachi Metepec. And then, approximately a couple of years later, two tremendously famous men named Alfredo Gil and Julito Rodriguez (from the Trio De Los Panchos) discovered him and aided him in securing a contract in the year 1950 with the CBS Recording Company in Mexico City. At the same time, he was under contract and singing at a very famous Teatro Lirico, also in downtown Mexico City. That same year, he met a very beautiful dancer by the name of Srta. Blanca Estela Saenz, whom he later married. With his first successful recording hit, he began to use his new "Stage name" of Javier Solis. Then, he began performing in other countries in Central and South-America, and also in the United States too. This man with one of the most beautiful voices in all of Latin-America, made over thirty movies during his short life-time. But his talented genius was cut short at the age of only 34 years by complications from Gall- bladder surgery, and he died on April 19th, 1966. His music has not died, nor has he been forgotten, and his fantastic singing is still available in many countries.- Actor

Versatile Mexico City-born cinematographer Joseph Patrick MacDonald was initially trained as a mining engineer at the University of Southern California. He served a lengthy apprenticeship, starting as assistant cameraman at First National in the early 1920's before eventually graduating to first camera operator by the beginning of the following decade. He became a full director of photography only after joining 20th Century Fox in 1941, staying at this studio until 1959. He was equally adept working with black-and-white or with colour film and was skilled in every genre, from films noir, to westerns, to musicals.
Most representative of his work are the gritty films noir Call Northside 777 (1948) and Panic in the Streets (1950); and two of the most sumptuous-looking films with Marilyn Monroe at her very peak: Niagara (1953) and How to Marry a Millionaire (1953) (incidentally, the first picture shot in CinemaScope). In stark contrast, MacDonald also shot one of the most visually evocative westerns of the period, John Ford's seminal My Darling Clementine (1946)and Elia Kazan's sweeping outdoor biopic Viva Zapata! (1952), partly filmed on location in Durango, Mexico.- Composer

- Ethnic bald-domed character actor Luis Van Rooten was born November 29, 1906, in Mexico City, but raised in the United States and would become known in post-war Hollywood as a specialist in multiple dialects. Studying at the University of Pennsylvania, he received his B.A. and set up a sturdy practice as an architect before making a dramatic transition into acting sometime during WWII. He built up his reputation initially on stage at the Cleveland Playhouse, then in radio serials, notably playing the titular sleuth in "The Adventures of Nero Wolfe." He also did special French, Italian and Spanish broadcasts during the war
After serving in the Armed Forces, he settled into post-war films, playing outright villains or slick, shady suspects. Interestingly, he bookended his film career impersonating the nefarious Nazi ringleader Heinrich Himmeler (1900-1945), who organized the extermination of millions of Jews during the Third Reich, in the films Hitler's Madman (1943) and Operation Eichmann (1961). In between he backed up the various studio's top stars including Alan Ladd in the rugged adventures Two Years Before the Mast (1946), Beyond Glory (1948) and Saigon (1947); Ray Milland and Charles Laughton in the exceptional film noir The Big Clock (1948);, Edward G. Robinson in Night Has a Thousand Eyes (1948) and Kirk Douglas in "Champion" (1949). One notable exception from the usual villainous typecast was his role as a plainclothes cop in the classic film Detective Story (1951).
By the 1950's Van Rooten had moved with ease into TV drama, performing in a number of live dramas during its vital "Golden Age." His regular work in TV series included One Man's Family (1949) and _"Major Dell Conway of the Flying Tigers" (1951)._ He is remembered by 50s TV fans as the fight manager in "The Joe Palooka Story"(1954-55). His slick, cultivated tones were utilized quite frequently in various documentaries and narrative projects. In later years (the 1960s), Van Rooten was seen less and less. He eventually retired during the decade to become an author and expert on horticultural subjects. He also enjoyed painting as a creative sideline. He died in 1973 at the age of 66 of unreported causes in Massachusetts. - Actor
