Mention the name Gilberto and Bossa Nova immediately comes to mind. Astrud was the original 'Girl from Ipanema' (composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes), famously singing the iconic hit song first featured on the classic 1963 album Getz/Gilberto. Released by Verve Records as a single in May 1964, Girl from Ipanema won a Grammy and established Astrud as a hot new commodity on the music scene. She also sang a second number on the album: 'Corcovado' ("Quiet Nights Of Quiet Stars").
She was born Astrud Evangelina Weinert in Salvador, in the province of Bahia. Her mother was Evangelina Neves Lobo Weinert who sang and played both violin and a traditional instrument, called a bandolim. Her German-born father Fritz was a language teacher. Through him, Astrud soon became fluent in English, French, Italian, Spanish and Japanese. In 1959,19-year old Astrud married the guitarist, vocalist and composer João Gilberto, who is credited as the inventor of Bossa Nova, a music genre fusing elements of traditional Brazilian samba with jazz. In this endeavour, he collaborated with the composer, songwriter, arranger and guitarist Antonio Carlos Jobim. Before long, the mellow sound of Bossa Nova found its popularity in the U.S. via exponents like jazz guitarist Charlie Byrd and saxophonist Stan Getz. Astrud went on to sing her signature number in the MGM musical Get Yourself a College Girl (1964), which also featured The Dave Clark Five and The Animals .
In 1965 and 1966, Astrud released her first trio of solo albums, featuring classic songs like 'Agua de Beber', Johnny Mandel 's 'The Shadow of your Smile', 'Tristeza', 'Fly Me to the Moon', 'Manhã de Carnaval' and 'Felicidade'. As her fame grew, she toured the U.S. with Stan Getz, including a famous gig at the Cafe Au Go Go in Greenwich Village. By this time, she had become a single mother, divorced from her husband.
Astrud was later to rue her association with Getz, not just because he was difficult to get on with. Much to her chagrin, Getz and record producer Creed Taylor also both laid exclusive claim to her 'discovery'. Moreover, Astrud received no credit on the original vinyl LP Getz/Gilberto, being merely paid the trifling sum of $120 for the session. Getz reaped the lion's share of profits from the album and denied the singer her fair share of the royalties. That despite the fact that 'Girl from Ipanema' ended up becoming one of the most widely recorded songs in popular music. Bryan McCann, professor of Brazilian history and author of a 2019 book, commented that "It was Astrud Gilberto who made the album a smash hit.Astrud provided the ineffable allure that made the album irresistible."
Some of her later partnerships proved rather more felicitous, notably a jazz album with Gil Evans and a collaboration in 1977 with trumpet player and singer Chet Baker on one of her own songs, 'Far Away'. In 1996, Astrud performed Jobim's beautiful number 'Desafinado' with George Michael for the AIDS benefit album Red Hot + Rio. In 2002 she was inducted into the International Latin Music Hall of Fame. For all intents and purposes, Astrud left the music scene in the early 2000's, spending her retirement in Philadelphia, away from publicity, studying philosophy, painting and becoming a powerful voice against cruelty to animals.- Actor

In 1983, Council For Positive Images and Meta/4 Productions' founder, Terry Carter (the first Black news reporter and co-star of the original Battlestar Galactica television series), casts Carla Portillo at age 15 in the lead role as Liz for a dramatic television miniseries K*I*D*S. The acting role allowed her to sign with the now-defunct, but then top Hollywood children's talent agency, Kelman/ Arletta and Associates. In 1985, K*I*D*S wins an Emmy Award for Best Series for Children and Youth.
Born in San Salvador, El Salvador in 1967, Carla immigrates to join her parents in Los Angeles in 1972. Raised in Hollywood, Carla attends the local public schools and quickly learns English. At Le Conte Middle School, she is a student in Mr. Robert Crumb's well-known drama class. After her unsuccessful acting tryouts for larger or lead roles in school plays, she is undeterred and auditions for Terry Carter and his production company when they visit Mr. Crumb's drama class. Finally, she gets a good part - the lead role in K*I*D*S.
With countless auditions under her belt, Carla is rarely hired. Her "look" is unconventional for television. Her beloved agent, Toni Kelman who years before represented four of the six Brady Bunch kids, confirms this by sending Carla to auditions for any ethnic or non-ethnic roles alike.
In the mid-to-late 1980s, Carla lands a few speaking roles on prime-time television. She plays Emita on Trapper John, M.D.-Strange Bedfellows (1986), a witness on Hunter-Playing God (1987), and Chata on her last acting role in 1988 on the TV series Police Story-Burn Out with leading actress, Lindsay Wagner. Carla also works on other television dramas like The Judge-a dramatized court show, and a daytime soap opera in a guest role. And for many years, visitors to the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles watched an introductory video in which Carla played a student.
Her parents, however, lacked enthusiasm for the whole acting experience, even if it helped the family financially. They worried about Carla going astray or associating with the wrong Hollywood crowd. Their vision for her is to attend college, and keep a strong sense of family. Other concerns of theirs included the stereotypical roles available to her - the gang member's girlfriend, or a troubled, suicidal, sometimes pregnant teenager.
Playing Liz was a role of a lifetime for Carla - not only because she was a regular American teenager one day, and the next a television actress - the role itself was ahead of its time. Broadcast on KCET, Los Angeles in 1984, K*I*D*S is created to teach and show diverse ethnicities in a positive light and focus on creating role models for school children. While Carla's "look" deemed unconventional for Hollywood in the 1980s, she represented the growing, diverse Latinx population, highly underrepresented in film and television during that time-an issue that remains relevant today.
Carla did not seek another talent agent after she grew out of the children's agency. She graduated from Fairfax High School in 1985 and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications - Radio, Television & Film. She made a career in creative services working her way up to Creative Director, successfully adding nearly 100 titles to her credit under Warner Bros., Rhino, Paramount and other studios for various Home Entertainment and digital marketing projects.
All that said, Carla is not the first Salvadoran to walk away from a Hollywood career, Maribel Arrieta in the mid-1950s walked away from a Hollywood contract - but Carla is the first Salvadoran-born actress on American prime-time television.- Carla Vila was born in San Salvador, El Salvador, but spent most of her childhood and early teenage years with her mother Blanca Luz Diaz in Florida. Carla demonstrated a special interest in the arts at a very early age. She was seen performing in plays, as well as ballet, dance and piano recitals.
Throughout high school, Carla maintained academic excellence. She was an honor roll student and a member of the Interact and Beta Clubs. In El Salvador, she earned a bachelor's degree in Architecture.
In 2001, she moved to Paris to pursue acting professionally. She trained with fine American coaches like Bob McAndrew and Bernard Hiller (Cameron Diaz's coach), to name a few. Within a couple of years, Carla appeared in such notable theater productions as "Bref! Soyons brefs..." and "Derniere repetition". In film, she starred in "Alea" (2004), short film winner of 10 national prizes in France including the Palmares of the 3rd Annual Short Film Festival. She followed up with an impressive performance as the Colombian junkie Carolina in "Blanc" (2004), a supernatural film about ethnically diverse strangers facing death, and later, as a cold hearted murderer in the pulp short film "I Want You" (2004) by Aurelien Manya.
She relocated to Los Angeles in 2005. Since her arrival in Hollywood, Carla's career has ranged from notorious commercials to fetching roles in films like the Spanish comedy "Chencho" (2006). She has since gained attention by appearing in popular TV shows like "ER (2009), "90210" (2009) "Southland" (2011) and "Grey's Anatomy" (2011). - Actor

- Cralos Marighela, a leader in the Brazilian anti-government guerrilla movement in the 1960s, was born in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. His father was an Italian immigrant and his mother was a Brazilian national descended from slaves brought to the country in the 19th century. He became involved in revolutionary politics while attending the Bahia Polytechnic School, and in 1934 joined the Brazilian Communist Party (PCB). He was arrested two years later for "subversive activities", thrown into prison and tortured, being released a year later, after which he went underground. He continued his anti-government activities, including the reorganization of the decimated PCB, and was again arrested in 1939. This time he stayed in prison for six years until he and other political prisoners were released when the military dictatorship that ran the country was replaced.
Marighela traveled to Communist China in the early 1950s, at the invitation of that government, and stayed for almost a year, honing his "revolutionary" skills. He returned to Brazil and put into action the skills he had learned. He was so effective in organizing resistance to the government that they spent years hunting him down, and its secret police finally tracked him to a movie theater in Rio de Janeiro in 1964. He was shot while being arrested, although some stories say he was arrested and then shot, and imprisoned again, but released by a court in 1965. He attended a meeting of Latin-American revolutionaries in Cuba in 1967, and was expelled from the PCB the following year. He founded a guerrilla organization called the ALN, and one of their first actions was the kidnapping of the American ambassador. That was followed by a string of robberies and kidnappings, and the handsome and charismatic Marighela became a folk hero to many of Brazil's poor and those who were unhappy with the country's military dictatorship. - Carolina Magalhães was born on 7 February 1979 in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. Christian Blaze was born in San Salvador, El Salvador, Central America in 1979. Amid the country's bitter civil war, his family fled to Canada in 1986, where Christian spent most of his childhood studying computers & electronics. He created his first software program at the age of 9 and sold his first program commercially at the age of 14, after returning to El Salvador in 1994.
In 1999, after graduating from high school and studying at the University of Central America (UCA), Christian returned to Vancouver, BC, and began his acting career at The Gastown Actors Studio under the direction of veteran instructor Mel Tuck. After graduating in 2001, Christian met his wife & future co-producer Crystal-Dawn Rosales on the set of a VFS student film, and the couple tied the knot shortly after.
In May 2003, Christian starred in the couple's directorial debut "SPANK" (2003). The short film went on to premiere at the 2003 Santa Fe Film Festival, and screened at over 20 other festivals in the 2004/2005 circuit, receiving impressive audience reactions and reviews. The film was later licensed to the CBC and aired in the spring of 2005 on the national network's late night ZeD TV program.
In April 2004, Christian & Crystal incorporated their new media company, Crystal Insight [ca] and began production on their first feature, a sci-fi thriller entitled "Alien Agenda: Project Grey" (2007). The film acquired initial DVD distribution in Japan, Russia, Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam & in the USA on VOD, but after several years in circulation the directors decided to re-cut the film in 2010. The director's cut of "Project Grey" was released in 2011 at the 6th annual Int. Sci-Fi & Fantasy Film Fest in Athens, Greece, and screened at several cult film festivals before finding a home with a new distributor (Reality Ent.) in the USA.
In the spring of 2010, Crystal Insight's first Stereoscopic 3D short film, a comedy entitled "Defending Maldito 3D" (2011) was produced. The film took Christian's acting in a new direction, playing a comedic latino gang member seeking some much needed legal advice. Christian required 8 hours in the spfx makeup chair, having custom tattoos painted all over his body & shaved head. "Defending Maldito 3D" was released on Oct 9th, 2011 as one of the first stereoscopic films on YouTube's new 3D platform. By this time, Christian was so heavily involved in the directing, editing & VFX of their own projects that he began to receive offers for other commercial projects around the world. This eventually resulted in him taking a break from acting to pursue work in directing, producing, visual effects and post-production.
In early 2012, Christian started working at Gloo Studios, where he embarked on his professional VFX career. During this time he earned compositor credits on episodes of "Edge of War" (Military Ch.) and "The Incredible Crew" (Cartoon Network) in addition to several CollegeHumor viral shorts such as "Batman vs. Scarecrow", "John Mayer's Hologram" and "Sherlock Blue's Clues" starring Thomas Middleditch.
