- After finishing school with a high school diploma, Cromme studied law and economics in Münster, Lausanne, Paris and Harvard (PMD) from 1962 to 1971. After the 1st and 2nd state law examinations, he received his doctorate in 1969 with the subject "Motor vehicle liability in France and Germany, a comparative legal study" at the University of Münster. In 1971 he began his professional career at the Compagnie de Saint-Gobain, where Cromme was most recently chairman of the board of the Vereinigte Glaswerke GmbH in Aachen and deputy general delegate responsible for Saint-Gobain's German business.
In 1986 he made his debut in the Krupp Group, initially as chairman of the board of Krupp Stahl AG in Bochum, before becoming chairman of the board of Fried in 1989. Krupp AG Hoesch-Krupp was appointed. He had a lasting influence on the takeover of the Ruhr competitor Hoesch in 1992. In 1999, Cromme was one of the initiators of the merger of Krupp and Thyssen to form ThyssenKrupp AG. From 1999 to 2001 he was chairman of the board of ThyssenKrupp AG together with former Thyssen manager Ekkehard Schulz. In October 2001 he was appointed chairman of the company's supervisory board.
In addition to his obligations for ThyssenKrupp AG, Gerhard Cromme became a member of the supervisory boards of Allianz, Lufthansa, E.ON, E.ON Ruhrgas, Hochtief, Volkswagen and Siemens as well as BNP Paribas and Suez S.A.. In April 2007, Cromme became chairman of the supervisory board of Siemens AG. Cromme is also chairman of the government commission on the German Corporate Governance Code, a member of the European Round Table of Industrialists and chairman of the supervisory board of the European School of Management and Technology in Berlin.
In his personal life, Gerhard Cromme is married and the father of four daughters.
