This elegant actor of the golden age of German cinema appeared in several masterpieces, before the cameras of such inspired geniuses as Lang, Lubitsch and Murnau. Vocation had come rather late in his life, though. Abel was indeed already 33 when he made his first film. Beforehand, he had been a forester, a gardener and a shopkeeper. But one day, while watching a film with Asta Nielsen, he was struck by revelation. He decided at once to become an actor and with the help of Nielsen in person he started a fruitful screen career. He also wrote and directed a few films. He died too soon aged only 57, but having honored the German screen with his noble, dignified figure in more than a hundred pictures.- Alfred Frith was born on 24 August 1879 in Poplar, London, England, UK. The grand, highly flamboyant Russian star Alla Nazimova of Hollywood silent films lived an equally grand, flamboyant life off-camera, though her legendary status has not held up as firmly as that of a Rudolph Valentino today.
Alla Nazimova was born Miriam Edez Adelaida Leventon in 1879, in Yalta, Crimea, in the Russian Empire, to Jewish parents, Sonya Horowitz and Yakov Leventon. She was the third child in an abusive, contentious household. Most of her sad childhood was spent in foster homes or in the care of other relatives and she showed a strong penchant for outrageous behavior to cope. Nazimova also showed a great aptitude for music at a young age and began violin lessons at age seven. She changed her name to Alla Nazimova when she began appearing on stage--her father insisted on it, as "performing" was not considered respectable at the time.
She began acting lessons at age 17 and joined Konstantin Stanislavski's company of actors as a pupil of his "method style" at the Moscow Art Theatre. During that time she supported herself by being kept by rich, older men. A failed love affair led to her only marriage, to an acting student named Sergei Golovin, but they separated quickly. She grew discontented with Stanislavsky and later performed in repertory. She met the legendary Pavel Orlenev, a close friend of Anton Chekhov and Maxim Gorky, and entered into both a personal and professional relationship with him. They toured internationally throughout Europe with great success and came to New York in 1905, where Nazimova was saluted on Broadway for her definitive interpretations of Henrik Ibsen's "Hedda Gabler" and "A Doll's House." Orlenev returned to Russia but Nazimova stayed.
She made her screen debut with War Brides (1916), which was initially a 35-minute play. By 1918 she was a box-office star for Metro Pictures and completed 11 films for the studio over a three-year period. A torrid, stylish and rather outré tragedienne who played exotic, liberal women confronted by great personal anguish, she earned personal successes as a reformed prostitute in Revelation (1918), a suicide in Toys of Fate (1918) and dual roles as half-sisters during the Boxer Rebellion in The Red Lantern (1919), not to mention the title role of Camille (1921) with Rudolph Valentino. At the same time she maintained a strong Broadway theatrical career.
In accordance with her rise in the film industry, she began producing her own efforts, which were bold and experimental--and monumental failures, although they are hailed as great artistic efforts today. Her Salomé (1922) was quite scandalous and deemed a failure at the time. The monetary losses she suffered as producer were astronomical. The Hays Code, which led to severe censorship in pictures, also led to her downfall, as did her outmoded acting style. She was forced to abandon films for the theater, scoring exceptionally well in Anton Chekhov's "The Cherry Orchard." She did return to films briefly in the 1940s in a variety of supporting roles, but she made these solely for the money.
Nazimova's private life has long been the subject of industry gossip. As a Hollywood cover to her well-known bisexual lifestyle, she coexisted in a "marriage" with gay actor Charles Bryant for well over a decade. Her "Garden of Allah" home was the centerpiece for many glamorous private parties. She died in 1945.- Additional Crew

- Alma Mahler-Werfel (Vienna, 1879 -- New York, 1964) - born in a wealthy bourgeois Viennese family, the daughter of the popular painter Emil Jakob Schindler and his wife Anna von Bergen - was arguably one of the greatest femmes fatales of the turn-of-the-century Europe: an era that was not only rich in femmes fatales, but worshiped - and feared - them. As a young girl, Alma was hailed as "the most beautiful girl in Vienna"; and throughout her life she inspired the admiration and love of some of the most talented men of her time. She was courted by Gustav Klimt, Paul Kammerer, Max Burckhard, and Alexander von Zemlinsky, among others.
In 1902, at the age of twenty-two, Alma married the famous composer (and director of the Vienna Court Opera) Gustav Mahler, with whom she then had two daughters (one of them, Maria, died at a very early age, the other one, Anna, grew up to be a well-known sculptor). Shortly after the death of her young daughter, Alma began an affair with the up-and-coming architect Walter Gropius (who became of the leading masters of 20th century architecture). After Mahler's death, in 1911, she engaged in a lengthy affair with the painter Oskar Kokoschka, who became obsessed with her (which led to a series of bizarre incidents, including the making of a life-size doll in Alma's likeness).
In 1915, Alma married her old flame Gropius. The following year she gave birth to their much-adored daughter, Manon. (Manon died suddenly, in April of 1935, leaving her mother - and a host of admirers - distraught with grief.) As early as 1917, during one of Gropius' frequent military leaves, she met the writer Franz Werfel, with whom she started living around the time of her divorce from Gropius (1920) and whom she eventually married (1929). With Werfel - who was Jewish, therefore in danger during the Nazi regime - she moved to the USA and remained there until her death, in 1964.
Upon close scrutiny it could be argued that Alma's life wasn't particularly easy, even though she lived in leisure for most of her lifetime. She seemed to have endured a lot of heartache; and, perhaps no less tragically, she had stifled her own considerable musical talent. (A few of her musical compositions - piano pieces - have been preserved.) She willingly resigned herself to serve as a muse to some of the most famous and talented men of her time. And that she did, in the grandest of styles: so much so that that the inspiration she provided could be rightly described as her greatest and proudest achievement. - Actor

Starting his show-business career as a singer and acrobat in French music halls, Deed got in almost at the ground floor of the French film industry, making his debut in 1905. It didn't take him long to become one of France's first major comic film stars, and he soon became internationally famous. Unfortunately, his popularity started to wane by 1915, and his screen appearances became less frequent; he made his last film in 1928. Sadly, he died ten years later, broke and forgotten by the industry that he helped to launch.- André Lefaur is undeniably part of the pantheon of French actors. One of those "eccentrics of the French Cinema" as Raymond Chirat and Olivier Barrot quite rightly dubbed them. One of these wonderful personalities of the stage and screen who alongside Michel Simon, Louis Jouvet, Saturnin Fabre, Raimu and several others have such a strong personality, such a personal style that they are absolutely inimitable. Just like the actors mentioned above, André Lefaur was first and foremost André Lefaur. Which does not mean that he did not make the character he played believable. Quite the contrary. But like Simon, Brasseur or Raimu, he made them bigger than life and- accordingly - unforgettable. It is to be noted that on the big screen was most of the time a nobleman (at lest twenty times: six times a marquis, four times a baron) and/or a figure of authority (four times a general, but also a colonel, a judge or a president). However, instead of causing the viewer to admire these figures of the elite, Lefaur invariably deflated the ego of those pompous empty windbags. Yes, André Lefaur was nearly always cast as a v.i.p. but this person was invariably starchy, tyrannical ('La Fleur d'Oranger'), weak, pretentious, ridiculous ('La Dixième Symphonie') or cuckolded ('L'Habit Vert'). On the other hand, he never made puppets of his characters. There was always humanity within them and the viewer tended to end up feeling sorry for them rather than despise them. Marc Allégret allowed Lefaur to display all his humanity in his final role, that of a loving father in 'Les Petites du Quai aux Fleurs'), which was a nice farewell present to a man who will always be remembered for his ability to deliver witty lines by Louis Verneuil, Mirande, Deval, Flers and Caillavet like nobody else.

Greek-born film producer Anthony J. Xydias got his start in the movie industry in 1909, when he opened up a theater in Dallas, TX. It was successful and it wasn't long before he had a string of theaters. In 1922 he decided to get into film production and started Sunset Productions, which specialized in low-budget westerns. His first "star" was cowboy actor Jack Hoxie. His films, while short-running and inexpensive, nonetheless proved successful, and Hoxie soon left for greener pastures--the much greener, and much bigger, ones at Universal Pictures.
Xydias elevated character player Kenneth MacDonald to replace Hoxie, but his pictures flopped and he was soon booted in favor of J.B. Warner, an actual cowboy from Nebraska. Warner made six pictures for Sunset before unfortunately dying from leukemia. Xydias apparently gave up on trying to groom a star for his westerns and decided to make a series of pictures about famous western figures from America's past: Buffalo Bill, George Custer, Daniel Boone, and others. While none would compete with the spectacles put out by Cecil B. DeMille, they were a notch or two above the flood of cheap, mostly inept westerns being churned out by many low-buck producers of that era.
Ill health forced Xydias' retirement in 1931, but he came back six years later with promises of producing a string of more "historical" westerns. Unfortunately, the only one he managed to turn out was Heroes of the Alamo (1937), a shoddy "epic" that turned off critics and audiences alike. He retired from the business after the failure of this film. In 1941 he was in the Philippines on a business trip when the country was invaded by Japanese forces. Xydias was captured and interned in a prison camp for the duration of the war.
He died in Los Angeles, CA, in 1952.- Antionette Van Dijk was born on 28 August 1879 in Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, Netherlands. She was an actress, known for Op een avond in mei (1936). She died on 24 June 1975 in The Hague, Zuid-Holland, Netherlands.
