British-born A. Edward ("Eddie") Sutherland started in vaudeville and acted in films from 1914 at Keystone (he was one of the original Keystone Kops). He became a director in 1925, first with Paramount (1925-31), then at United Artists (1931-32), again with Paramount (1933, 1935-37), then Universal (1940-41) and RKO (1942). He hit his stride in the 1930s and 1940s with a string of well-received comedies starring Laurel & Hardy and W.C. Fields, but his Abie's Irish Rose (1946), an adaptation of the often-filmed stage play, which he also produced, was such a critical and financial disaster that he could not find work as a director in Hollywood again. In the 1950s he went to Britain and ended his career directing episodic television.- Music Department

- Aileen Pringle's favorite film was a mid-1920s silent based on a book by Elinor Glyn: Three Weeks (1924), sort of a "Lady Chatterly's Lover". She recalled in a 1980 telephone conversation: "The film was in good taste; some people thought the book was trashy". Anita Loos wrote in "A Girl Like I", the first volume of her autobiography, vaudeville comic Joe Frisco telling Glynn: "Leave me get this straight. You want to find some tramp that don't look like a tramp, to play that English tramp in your picture. But take it from me, that kind of tramp don't hang out in Hollywood". Aileen had spent her 20s married to Charles McKenzie Pringle, the son of Sir John Pringle, a Jamaica landowner and a member of the Privy and Legislative Councils of Jamaica. Aileen lived in Jamaica until she went on stage with George Arliss. When she began divorce proceedings against Pringle in 1926, Hollywood gossip columnists speculated she would marry H.L. Mencken. She did not remarry until 1944 when she became the bride of James M. Cain, author of "The Postman Always Rings Twice". I opened my 1980 telephone conversation with Aileen by mentioning that the day before I had been reading her correspondence with Mencken at the New York Public Library. "But all the letters were destroyed", she said. I knew that Mencken had asked for all of his letters to her back at the time he became engaged to Sara Haardt. Aileen was the only woman who received such a request from Mencken at that time. "It was your letters from the late '30s and '40s I was reading", I told Aileen. "In one of them Mencken was urging you to write a book. Did you ever finish it?" "No. I got married instead." In a 1946 letter she wrote to Mencken. "If I had remained married to that psychotic Cain, I would be wearing a straitjacket instead of the New Look."

American director, billed early in his career as' Al' Santell. A former architect (graduate of Los Angeles University) he began in the movie industry in 1914 as a general factotum at the Lubinville Studio in Philadelphia before working his way up the ladder to director/scenarist in which capacity he handled one- and two-reel short comedy subjects for Mack Sennett, Hal Roach and at Kalem. Following a brief spell in the army (1918-19) he advanced to supervising manager at Universal and was given his own comedy series (the "Alfred Santell Comedies") which starred a trained chimp named Joe Martin! By 1923, he had progressed to feature film direction and signed a lengthy contract with First National. A renowned light comedy specialist, Santell made an assured transition to sound. In the course of the next 15 years he turned out a string of solid second features -- as well as the occasional "A"-grade release -- for 20th Century-Fox (1929-33), RKO (1934-35), Paramount (1936-42) and United Artists (1943-44).
One of his best talkies was an early entry into the "Dr. Kildare" cycle (that was before MGM picked up the option and made millions from the franchise !). This was Internes Can't Take Money (1937), a slickly made box-office hit with Joel McCrea as the good doc and Barbara Stanwyck as an ex-convict mother. The New York Times critic described Santell's direction as "a blend of [Alfred Hitchcock] suspense and American verve". Other noteworthy highlights in his career include an early version of The Sea Wolf (1930) (starring Jane Keithley who later became Mrs. Santell), Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm (1932), Winterset (1936) (based on the play by Maxwell Anderson), Aloma of the South Seas (1941) and the biopic Jack London (1943). Santell retired in 1946 after directing a couple of B-movies for Republic.- Alice Lake was born on 12 September 1895 in Brooklyn, New York City, New York, USA.
