Harry Lauder II, the fifth son of Matthew Currie Lauder (1872-1933) by his spouse Catherine (née Vallance), was a musical prodigy educated at the expense of his famous uncle, Sir Harry Lauder (1870-1950). Harry II was an advanced pupil of Leopold Dagradi in Milan, of Hardesty Johnson in Paris, and Ellis Rhodes in Chicago. A fine tenor, he was possibly best known for his roles with the Winthrop Ames Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company touring widely with them in 1928, including Indianapolis, Columbus, Ohio, and Richmond, Virginia. He was second conductor with this company's orchestra, and did some guest conducting in Chicago, before being employed by William Fox's Fox Movietone News, where he conducted the orchestra for 18 months before being taken by Fox to Hollywood.
In addition to being one of William Fox's conductors, he also played parts as an extra in several Fox films, such as "Happy Days" (1929) (chorus), "Women Everywhere" (1930), "Rough Romance" (1930), "Sea Wolf" (1930), and "Delicious" (1931).
He also had a teaching studio at the Glendale Music Company, 118 South Brand, Glendale, California, his business card saying that he had 18 months conducting on the concert platform, and was a vocal teacher and microphone specialist. He also wrote a mass of popular tunes and an opera, based in the South Sea Islands entitled "Tina", which have not been published. His several plays had more success.
During the Second World War he found himself stranded in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, where several of his plays were staged, including "Glorious Descent" at 'The Little Theatre', and where he was again engaged in film production as an assistant director and conductor for "The Power and the Glory" (1941). He died in Sydney on December 5, 1951, after suffering a Stroke.

A professor at UCLA from 1930-1967, John Caughey was one of the foremost historians of California of his time. His books include Gold is the Cornerstone, California Heritage, and Their Majesties the Mob (about vigilantism). In 1949 he defied the Regents of the University of California by refusing to sign a loyalty oath he considered unconstitutional. He was fired but eventually vindicated in court and reinstated. That experience started him on a new career as a civil rights activist. Together with his wife LaRee Caughey he worked to oppose the death penalty, nuclear testing, and especially racial discrimination. In the 1960s the couple wrote a fourth-grade textbook (California's Own History) and an 8th-grade US history textbook (Land of the Free, in collaboration with Ernest R. May and John Hope Franklin), both designed to address the need to teach children the truth about some of the less glorious aspects of our history, such as internment of Japanese-Americans and Jim Crow, as well as about the labor movement, the women's movement, and other grassroots efforts for change. Conservative organizations like the John Birch Society fought hard against these texts, but they were eventually adopted for use in the California schools.- Second Unit Director or Assistant Director

She was educated in Hungary, and when she graduated high school she left for Paris, France, to study English and French at the Sorbonne. They failed to hold her interest, however, so she dropped them for sociology and psychology. She wrote a few papers on sociological problems and, to her amazement, found them published in serious journals. She began to work in Paris as a reader and translator--she spoke Hungarian, English and French--and before long she had written and published a novel, "Prelude to Love", which won a French literary prize. Other novels followed.
She became involved in politics, and was a vociferous anti-Nazi and anti-fascist (which did not go over well with the right-wing Hungarian government of Adm. Miklós Horthy, which was allied with Nazi Germany). Foldes soon moved to England, and lived there until October of 1963, when she died in London.
