Sam Smith went to Canada in the 20s to install the first "talkies" in the cinemas there. He returned to the UK to buy films to exhibit in Canada, purchasing and exhibiting the Official war films "Zeebrugge, Mons and Ypres". He made his debut as a Producer in 1923 with A Royal Divorce. He was associated with G.B. Samuelson for some years before forming British Lion Film. Edgar Wallace was chairman in 1927. He was soon joined by younger brother Herbert.
