In the 1960s and 1970s, Dick Emery was one of the most successful comics on the box. He was voted BBC TV Personality of the Year, thanks to creations such as his toothy vicar, sex-starved spinster Hettie, crusty old Lampwick, outrageously camp Clarence, who coined the phrase: "Hallo honky tonks". Perhaps the most memorable of all was Mandy, a busty middle-aged woman whose repressed nature was usually betrayed by a sudden affectionate slap and a cry of: "Ooh, you are awful. But I like you!".
While his creations left millions howling, in private Emery was a man with a terrible fear of failure. He was often sick before performances and would sleep to escape stage nerves prior to a performance. Bob Monkhouse once incurred his wrath by accidentally waking him before a Royal Variety Performance. Emery exploded in a torrent of abuse as Monkhouse recalled in his book 'Over the Limit'. Emery used to spend hours in analysis, was hypnotised, tried many sedatives and drugs to cure his tension - though the pills scared him as much as the fear of failure.
He once told friend and co-star Roy Kinnear: "I don't just envy the confidence that other comics seem to have, I resent it. I hate them for it, just like my dad did. If there's such a thing as a chip off the old block, it's on my shoulder."
Emery married five times and left his last wife to live with a showgirl 30 years younger than him. His BBC show was axed after 12 years in 1979 and he died four years later.- Olive Mercer was born on 15 September 1905 in Hendon, Middlesex [now in Barnet, London], England, UK. Her parents moved to Kansas City when she was a young girl. It was there that her vocal talents were first discovered and cultivated. A 1922 concert helped to raise the money she needed to receive professional training - including a year of study in Italy. She debuted at the New York Metropolitan Opera 17 February 1926, her performance broadcast over Kansas City radio. At the time of her debut, she was 19 and the youngest prima donna in Met history. She retired after only four seasons, giving the explanation that she wanted to go live on her Kansas farm. This explanation was not entirely believed by some, and rumors of other reasons circulated - including the theory that she lacked the ambition and drive needed for long term success. Another rumor was that the Met was going to let her go at the end of her contract. Whatever the true reason for her early retirement, she did not move to the Kansas farm (which she did own, but never lived on), but to Hollywood, California. There, she made her only movie, Follow Your Heart. She was contracted to make a film for MGM, but it never came to fruition. After her divorce from Eckstein in 1935 and a very bitter and public custody battle over their daughter Susan, she withdrew from almost all performing, and spent the rest of her life concentrating on her family. Her death occurred somewhat suddenly, during surgery to treat a problem with blood clots in her legs.- Daniel Boone Savage was born on 9 March 1900 in East Liverpool, Ohio, USA. Born on July 29, 1910, to R.L. and Isabel Rutter in Spokane, Washington, Gale Page was christened Sally Perkins Rutter in the beginning. Coming from a political family, her uncle, Miles Poindexter (1868-1946), was a U.S. senator from the state of Washington who later became an ambassador to Peru. Her great-grandfather was Joseph Gale (1807-1881), the first governor of Oregon.
A one-time radio actress and singer with Ted Weems' Orchestra, she appeared on radio soaps such as "Masquerade" (as blues singer Gertrude Lamont) and as Gloria Marsh on "Today's Children." Spotted for films by Warner Bros, she moved to Hollywood in 1938 and her moniker immediately changed by the studio to the more marquee-friendly "Gale Page."
A lovely, wholesome-faced, curly-haired brunette, Gale was a brief fixture in films nominally consigned to play pleasant, decorative roles in such potboilers as Crime School (1938) (her debut), Indianapolis Speedway (1939), and They Drive by Night (1940). She was handed the role of her career as one of musical sisters in the classic tearjerker Four Daughters (1938) co-starring with the three Lane sisters (Priscilla Lane, Rosemary Lane, Lola Lane) when Universal passed on casting their fourth sister, Leota Lane. She went on, with the others, to co-star in the three sequels Daughters Courageous (1939), Four Wives (1939) and Four Mothers (1941).
Gale appeared in only 16 films during her career, including the action adventure Heart of the North (1938); the Humphrey Bogart crime drama You Can't Get Away with Murder (1939); the musical comedy Naughty But Nice (1939); the action drama Indianapolis Speedway (1939), the domestic drama A Child Is Born (1939), the film noir They Drive by Night (1940); the William Saroyan classic The Time of Your Life (1948). Gale additionally won the lead femme role as the altruistic wife of Knute Rockne All American (1940) starring Pat O'Brien in the title role and Ronald Reagan whose famous catchphrase ("Win just one for the Gipper") showed up here.
After completing a secondary role in the film noir Anna Lucasta (1949) starring Paulette Goddard, Gale abandoned the screen for family life. She reappeared just once in a movie a few years later with the soapy Shirley Booth vehicle About Mrs. Leslie (1954). She also was sporadically seen on several episodes of the TV anthology Robert Montgomery Presents (1950), as well as guest appearances on "The United States Steel Hour," "Hawaiian Eye," "Sam Benedict" and, her last, "The Eleventh Hour" in 1964.
Page was first married to Frederick Tritschler, with whom she had a son. Following their 1939 divorce, she married Count Aldo Solìto de Solis, a pianist and composer. Their son, Luchino Solito de Solis Jr., was featured on Broadway in a juvenile role in the 1956 production of "Waiting for Godot."
