- Brett Ambler was born on December 8, 1984 in Redding, Connecticut, USA, is an actor as well as a musician, perhaps still best known for being the Kazoo Kid, appearing as a child actor in a commercial featuring the Kazoo in 1989. The video later resurfaced in 2016 as a meme, and it pushed him back to popularity. Brett grew up in Redding, but very little information is known about his family. It is also not known if he intended to pursue an acting career in the beginning. However, during one occasion in elementary school, his teacher informed the class about auditions for a toy company's first ever toy product to which he went, and the producers were impressed by how comfortable he was in front of the camera.
The toy in question would be the kazoo, a musical instrument which modifies the player's voice through a vibrating membrane, giving a buzzing timbral quality to someone's voice. He did 30 minutes of filming for the commercial, in which he is seen with some friends starting to play the kazoo. According to him, the way the audio of the commercial was recorded was weird, as all male voices were dubbed while female voices were dubbed by just one person. This opportunity would open up more doors for him.
In 2011, the Kazoo Kid started appearing online, as a segment of the commercial was uploaded on YouTube by Jim VanBlarium. Three years later, a better refurbished version of the commercial was uploaded to the channel of Dead VCR, which found a bit of popularity, attracting over half a million views. In 2015, a Redditor Mikesicle posted the video, and it gained a lot of upvotes, which led to numerous techno remixes posted on SoundCloud. Video versions of the audio remix were posted on YouTube too, and the following year, the video reached over two million views thanks to the Facebook page of Hood Vines. - Cathy Nesbitt-Stein was born on April 19, 1959 in Canton, Ohio, USA. Carl Patrick O'Brien was the youngest of three sons of Haskell "Hack" O'Brien, a well-known professional drummer. His oldest brother Haskell Junior played trumpet, while the middle brother Warren played drums. Cubby got his nickname from his mother, who thought he looked like a bear cub as an infant. The family lived in Sun Valley, California.
Cubby began playing drums in earnest at age five, while attending the Carl Babcock Music School in Sherman Oaks, where his father taught. At age eight, with the Roger Babcock Dixieland Band, Cubby performed several times on the Spade Cooley television show, and at rallies and benefits. One of these was the 1954 Screen Actors Guild Christmas benefit, where a Disney producer spotted him and later told Walt. Walt Disney then saw Cubby perform on the Ray Bolger Show and requested he be auditioned for the Mickey Mouse Club.
Cubby was the only musician among the Mouseketeers who was allowed to play on-camera; whether this had something to do with Walt casting him or not is unknown. Certainly Cubby never had the rumors of favoritism surrounding him like Annette did, possibly because his skill was obvious to all. In the show's first week, he got to play drums for Talent Round-Up day in a combo with his father Hack and brother Warren. From then on he was given many opportunities to play rhythm instruments, but his talent didn't end with music; he was a fine comedic actor, and learned enough dancing on the show to fake his way through the numbers. His singing was ok, though he wasn't called on for solos like Karen Pendleton.
Cubby appeared in the Disney film Westward Ho, the Wagons with Tommy Cole, Karen, and Doreen Tracey in 1956. The four Mouseketeers had barely any lines and very few scenes in this tepid Western. As the second season started, the Mouseketeer production numbers shifted more to emphasizing older teen couples. Cubby still appeared in comic bits, but he was more often solo than paired with Karen.
In the third year Cubby did the introductions for the serial The New Adventures of Spin & Marty, and shared introduction duties for the Mousekartoon with Karen. Like the Roll Call and Alma Mater for this season, these consisted of a single take used over and over. He also appeared in the Disneyland 4th Anniversary episode, and was slated to play a role in the proposed film, Rainbow Road to Oz.
Like Annette, Cubby and Karen had been offered a contract extension after the Mickey Mouse Club stopped filming, but the offer was contingent on both accepting. Karen's father decided not to accept the offer, so the pair were cut loose like the other Mouseketeers. Cubby went immediately to The Lawrence Welk Show, where he stayed two years. Having just come from one close studio family, he wasn't ready to accept another all-encompassing show family. After leaving that show, he had his own combo for awhile, while going to the Hollywood Professional School. He then toured for several years with Spike Jones, a manic bandleader and composer, whose music defies description. Cubby then had gigs with Ann Margaret, Jim Nabors, and The Carol Burnett Show, where Carol often chatted with him on camera. While still playing for her show, Cubby also began working with Karen and Richard Carpenter, and doing conducting for touring Broadway shows in the Los Angeles area.
Cubby met his first wife Marilyn Miller while touring with Spike Jones. They were married around 1966, and had a daughter together before divorcing around 1976. In 1978, Cubby married Terry Wilemon, but that too ended in divorce in 1999. He married for the third time in 2002, to a lady named Holly, and we'll hope the third time is the charm. Cubby still works constantly, playing drums for various touring Broadway shows, and with Bernadette Peters. He has taken part in many of the Mouseketeer Reunion shows, including the 50th Anniversary in 2005, but usually is too busy drumming to make personal appearances.- Dennis Day was born on July 12, 1942 in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA and later moved to Downey, California, USA. He started acting at age six and after auditioning with his sister, was a Mouseketeer for the first two seasons of The Mickey Mouse Club in 1955-1957.
He came out as gay to his family and moved to San Francisco, California, USA when he turned 18. Though he later told a Rolling Stone interviewer in 1971 that he was bisexual and had used drugs. He continued to work as an actor and dancer, including at Theatre La MaMa in New York and in Los Angeles.
Day married Henry Ernest Caswell, his partner since the early 1970s, in 2009. Day and Caswell at one time ran a guesthouse for gay actors in San Francisco; from the 1960s until the early 1980s, Day worked for the Living History Centre, producing Renaissance and Dickens Christmas fairs, playing Newington Butts at the Renaissance fairs and also coaching other actors. They moved in the mid-1980s to Oregon, first settling in Ashland, and then in Phoenix, where they had a house. Caswell also worked for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, while Day made and sold wine jelly and worked seasonally for Harry & David.
Day was reportedly last seen on July 17, 2018 after Caswell, (who has dementia), was admitted to the hospital after a fall. Day reportedly left on foot, telling a third housemate, a live-in handyman, that he was going to visit friends, but his cat and dog were left behind, and the dog was found roaming by neighbors. One neighbor had a letter written by Day mentioning being assaulted by the handyman, who told police that Day was also exhibiting signs of mental problems. After Day was reported missing, his car was found in the possession of people approximately 200 miles (320 km) away in Coos County, who, according to police, said that they had permission to take it, possibly in exchange for helping the handyman. In August 2018, police searched the property after neighbors complained of a "bad smell". Friends began asking for help locating him starting in November that year, and in February 2019, after his family learned of his disappearance, his case was featured on an episode of Dateline NBC.
Police had searched Day's residence and elsewhere, but in early April 2019 human remains were discovered on the property. On June 6, 2019, it was announced that the remains were confirmed as those of Day, though a cause of death was not announced. On July 5, 2019, Oregon State Police arrested the former handyman in connection to Day's death. The man, 36-year-old Daniel James Burda, was charged with several crimes in connection with Day's death, including manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, and identity theft.
Dennis Day disappeared on July 17, 2018 in Phoenix, Oregon, USA. His Body was discovered on April 7, 2019 in Jackson County, Oregon, USA. - Drea German (aka Drea Okeke) was born on April 8, 1995 in New York, USA. Eileen Sharon Diamond was born in Los Angeles on June 15, 1943, to Harry Diamond, a real estate broker, and Hannah Thurschwell. Hannah encouraged her daughter to excel in music and dance. Eileen lived most of her young life in the Hollywood Hills, in the midst of the entertainment industry. Eileen started dance lessons at an early age, attending the Rainbow Dance Studio owned by Doreen Tracey's father. Although she and Doreen were not exactly close friends, they did visit at each other's home in their pre-Mouseketeer days.
An exceptional ballerina, Eileen was chosen on the spot by noted choreographer George Balanchine to appear in his 1954 production of Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker with the New York City Ballet. She later danced Balanchine's Nutcracker at the Greek Theatre in Hollywood, and also in San Francisco. Eileen played piano, and would be the only Mouseketeer other than Cubby to be afforded a solo instrumental spot on the show.
Eileen auditioned for the original cast of the First Season of the Club, but didn't make the cut. Next year, she auditioned again and made the Second Season cast. Choreographer Tom Mahoney was looking for more skilled dancers to do more complicated numbers than in the First Season. Although she didn't appear in roll call and was often used as part of an audience for circus acts, talent winners, etc., Eileen did get featured parts as a dancer in Polka Dot Waltz, 1925 Sweetshop, Land of Me-Oh-My, The Tramps, and The Dogies Danced All Night.
Eileen was a well-rounded performer and could sing. Although she was never featured as a singer, she did get to sing an occasional solo line in numbers such as Land of Me-Oh-My and Holiday in Hawaii. She could also act, was cast as the voice-over narrator for the five-part Anything Can Happen Day feature Fun with a Camera, learning the basics of photography at the San Diego Zoo and Disneyland. She also did the voice over for another multi-part serial called Rookie Fireman, this time with Walt Disney himself as a co-host. Eileen and three other kids were put through an abbreviated training program by the Los Angeles City Fire Department, and she was carried down a ladder (all 78 pounds of her) in a rescue simulation.
Eileen in a publicity photo highlighting the upcoming second season of the MMC The Blue Team member's lot was to toil in obscurity, back or side to camera, as someone else did the star turn Eileen hauls hose with LA County's finest Sherry Alberoni and Eileen work the water cannon Eileen, Jack Jackman, and Charley Laney get their rookie certificates from the battalion chief
One thing made Eileen somewhat unique: she soloed a complete work on the piano in Basketball Ballet on Fun With Music Day. The first part of the number was a dispute between the boys and girls over use of a high school gym before an upcoming show. Eileen was the rehearsal pianist. In the second part, Eileen confided to Cubby that she felt that no one liked classical music. Segue to a dream sequence: Eileen imagines herself in a formal gown playing Beethoven on a large grand piano. When she wakes from her dream, she finds that the kids really liked the piece and invite her to be part of the show. In actuality, the producers asked Eileen if she knew any boogie, but she had just learned Beethoven's Für Elise, and asked if she could play that. It was one of the classier moments of the show.
Despite all her talent, the Studio did not retain Eileen for the Third Season. This left her disappointed, asking herself what she could have done differently. She was not alone among the Mouseketeers in this regard. Some Mouseketeers ended their performing days with the Mickey Mouse Club. For Eileen it was simply a beginning, and she was going on auditions while still a student at Fairfax High School in Los Angeles. When she returned to the Disney Studio to audition for Babes in Toyland (1961), choreographer Tom Mahoney spotted her and hired her immediately. She wound up doing high kicks with Tommy Sands in the front line of the opening dance number and reconnecting briefly with Annette.
Eileen played one of the students marching along with Robert Preston in The Music Man (1962) and appeared as a harem girl in an Elvis Presley movie, Roustabout (1964). It may be noted that background dancers were not credited back then. She was a bikini dancer in an episode of Route 66, and did some Scopitone video clips, including one with singer Bobby Vee, again wearing a bikini. Not your typical Mouseketeer fare.
Finding she preferred dancing before a live audience, Eileen joined the repertory companies of the Melodyland Theater in Anaheim, The Sacramento Music Circus and the Valley Music Hall in Utah in the 60's, doing stage shows from Oklahoma to The Music Man to Pal Joey. She married conductor-composer Roy Rogosin in 1964 and they have two adult children.
As a couple, Eileen and Roy founded the Seacoast Repertory Theater in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, later adding the Ogunquit Playhouse in Maine. Roy served as artistic director and producer, while Eileen was associate producer and casting director. Eileen also gave dance lessons to local students and did the choreography for their stage productions. In 1986, the Rogosins founded a program called C-A-M-P: Creative- Arts- Music- Performance, in Portsmouth. This was a summer camp for children and teens concentrating on all areas of performance to include singing, dancing, writing, acting and musicianship. In 2007, they moved their program to Santa Fe, New Mexico. Several of their campers have gone on to Broadway. The Rogosins have recently retired to Todos Santos, an artistically inclined community in Baja California.- Flau'jae was born November 3, 2003 in Savannah, Georgia, USA. - Karen Anita Pendleton was born in Glendale and raised in North Hollywood, California. She was the youngest of three children, her sister Yvonne and brother Kent being many years older. Her father was a movie set builder, but Karen had no exposure to show business prior to the show. She took dancing lessons with Elaine Troy from age three, but had never even entered an amateur contest, let alone done professional work. She went to the audition with two other girls from her studio. Afterwards she was asked to sing; it perhaps helped that she recognized one of the judges, Jimmie Dodd, as the fellow who the week before sang at the First Presbyterian Church, which Karen and her family attended.
Karen's initial appeal lay in her slightly raspy singing voice and wide-open eyes. She was a good dancer, but that part of her talent wasn't emphasized until the later seasons. For duets, Karen was matched with either Johnny Crawford, who was also a good singer, or with Cubby when no male solo was needed. Johnny was let go midway through the first season, so for the next two and a half years she and Cubby were singing partners.
Karen was very popular in the first season, receiving enough fan mail that she was given her own mini-series entitled Karen in Kartoonland. She narrated and starred in this four-part feature that explained how animation worked. In 1956 she was tapped to appear in the Disney movie Westward Ho, the Wagons, along with Cubby, Tommy, and Doreen. Karen had slightly more screen time than the others, but just as few lines.
Karen's friends on the set tended to be the girls her own age; she didn't really interact much with the older girls. In the third season, though she was friends with Linda Hughes, she undoubtedly lost some singing parts to her. The Mouseketeer production numbers gradually shifted focus to the teenage kids, leaving Karen with less screen time. She was given the job of introducing the Annette serial episodes, and shared the Mousekartoon introductions with Cubby. When the Rainbow Road to Oz was proposed, she was cast as Polychrome, and had a short song solo and some dancing parts in the Disneyland episode promoting that film project.
When the show ended, so did Karen's career. She and Cubby had been offered a contract extension, contingent upon both re-signing, but Karen's father decided against it. She never really liked acting, only dancing and singing, and she found going to auditions an ordeal. Public school was hard for her; she was sensitive and shy, and became a target for teasing about her Mouseketeer days. She continued to work on her dancing with Elaine Troy, and helped give lessons to newcomers at the latter's North Hollywood studio. In 1959, and again in 1960, she went on the Mouseketeer tours of Australia organized by Jimmie Dodd. At odd intervals she would appear in the fan magazines, invited to a birthday bash for Cheryl, or a magazine-sponsored Mouseketeer reunion party.
Though Karen and Cubby were never romantically involved, she did go out for a while with Johnny Crawford, and in 1969 appeared on The Dating Game, where she picked Bobby Burgess as her date after recognizing his voice. After high school, Karen went to college for a while, then quit and started working at May department store as a sales clerk. She had some embarrassing encounters with folks she knew from the show, including Cheryl Holdridge, then the wealthy wife of Lance Reventlow, and with Annette's mother. She later went to work for Prudential, again as a clerk. Karen married Mike DeLaurer, a lawyer and a Marine veteran of Vietnam, in 1970. They had a daughter in 1973, but later divorced.
In 1983 Karen was in an automobile accident that left her paralyzed from the waist down. An event that destroyed a dancer may have been the genesis of a new Karen. She'd always lacked confidence; now, perhaps born of frustration and anger, she forced herself to complete college, earning first a B.A., then a Master of Science degree, in Psychology, while continuing to raise her daughter. She took a full-time job at a shelter for battered women, and testified at government hearings on problems facing the handicapped. In the late 1990's she served on the Board for the California Association of the Physically Handicapped (now known as Californians for Disability Rights), and was director of the Center for Independent Living in her city. In 2004 she appeared on the Disney Treasures DVD interview conducted by Leonard Maltin with several other Mouseketeers, and in 2005 took part in the 50th Anniversary Celebration for the Mickey Mouse Club. She was also awarded a "Mousecar" (Oscar) during August 2015 for the MMC's 60th Anniversary, though she did not attend the ceremonies. Karen passed away on Sunday, October 6, 2019, leaving behind her daughter, son-in-law, and two grandchildren. - Katherine Lucia was born on January 29, 1992 in Los Angeles, California, USA.
