Russell Andrews is an actor, director, producer and the founding member of StageWalkers Productions, a multi award winning Los Angeles based stage company. As both artistic director and managing producer Andrews and company have received over 30 LA Theatre award nominations with wins that include 2 NAACP Theatre Awards and 2 LA Stage Alliance Ovation Awards (L.A.'s version of the Tony Award) for his work with Pulitzer Prize winning author August Wilson's Piano Lesson, Jitney and Ma Rainey's Black Bottom in which Russell received his first NAACP Theatre Award for Best Actor.
Born in Huntsville, Texas, Russell grew up in Houston and is an alum of Houston's Ross Sterling High School and Northwest Academy. After a very celebrated athletic career in high school, he received a scholarship to Blinn College and later went on to attend the University of Houston and Texas Southern University where he majored in sociology. After jobs ranging from drug store manager to furniture mover, to a longer than anticipated stay as a prison guard at the Texas Dept. of Corrections, he found his way to the "boards" and never looked back.
Russell began his acting career in Houston at The Ensemble Theatre and after the National/International tours of Thomas Meloncon's The Diary of Black Men, graduated to the city's largest venue, The Alley Theatre. After breakthrough performances as 'Willie' in the stage version of David Felshuh's drama Miss Evers' Boys and 'Levee' in August Wilson's Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, Russell moved to Washington, D.C. to study Shakespeare at The Folger Shakespeare Library's Folger Theatre and landed the role of Petruchio in that season's Taming of the Shrew. Andrews later relocated to New York City where his first role was at the famed Playwrights Horizons as Superboy in Marion McClinton's Police Boys. He continued to study, gain national recognition and become a regular face on the regional theatre and Off-Broadway circuit. Mr. Andrews has performed around the U.S. and across the Atlantic where on the London Stages "intense" and "passionate" were commonly associated with his work.
- Andrews and August Wilson -
In other productions Mr. Andrews played Red Carter in Mr. Wilson's Seven Guitars at The Pittsburgh Public Theater and Baltimore's Center Stage (theater). Also at The Public Theatre as an August Wilson 'hired gun' Russell was one of the handpicked actors chosen in 1996 to develop the much anticipated re-write of Mr. Wilson's 70's drama, Jitney. In 1999 Mr. Andrews was called upon to create and develop the role of Mister in the world premier of Wilson's King Hedley II at The Pittsburgh Public Theater and in subsequent runs at The Seattle Repertory Theatre in Washington state and The Huntington Theatre Company in Boston, Mass. In the midst of King Hedley's 2000 PR-Broadway tour Mr. Andrews was asked to return to Jitney in NYC. The production played off-Broadway to sold-out houses at NY's Second Stage Theatre and Union Square Theatre and after 8 months the play moved overseas to The Royal National Theatre in London, England.
As 'Youngblood' in Jitney, Andrews, along with Wilson and the stellar cast that starred and Roger Robinson, Keith Randolph Smith and multiple Tony Nominee, Dr. Stephen McKinley Henderson, were the recipients of the 2002 Sir Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play performed at The Royal National Theatre in London and directed by director Marion McClinton.
With a career that spans over 25 years, Russell's TV and Film highlights include Vice Principal Gaines in HBO's INSECURE, Principal Avery in HBO's STERLING. Additionally, he was chosen by Oscar nominated director Dianne Houston for the roles of Attorney Davis in Lifetime Network's Michael Jackson: Searching for Neverland and Rev. A.J. started his journey in the film industry at the humble age of just 16 as Assistant Producer for the Channel 7 children's TV show A*mazing hosted by James Sherry. Producing 3 seasons, 195 episodes of the show resulting in the longest running and most successful children's TV show in Australia History, and forging his pathway as the youngest person in Australia ever to fill such a position. The next two years would see A.J. working at every major television station in his hometown, Perth, shooting news, current affairs, sports & lifestyle programs, and at Australian TV giant Global Television (Big Brother, Australian Idol). On graduation of year 12 at school, A.J. had already successfully achieved on-screen credits in over 200 television episodes.
Shortly after, A.J. spread his wings from his hometown of Perth, Australia, to the United States in pursuit of challenging projects more suited to his love and passion for narrative film. This presence in Los Angeles led to the formation of Metropolis Media Group, the sister company to Smooth Motion Films in Western Australia. The US-based office has afforded A.J. much invaluable directing experience through many Hollywood-based productions such as multiple TV series and more than 200 US television commercials.
His narrative writing and directorial debut was seen with the release of the Australian production "Ronan's Escape", a highly controversial 16-minute film. The unique hard-hitting screenplay attracted the likes of Academy Award nominee Martin Mhando, who produced the film. "Ronan's Escape" instantly achieved critical acclaim, screening at 17 international film festivals around the world, and has since earned the film and A.J. a total of 13 international film award nominations and 10 wins, including the 'World Cinema Directing Award' for Best Director at the Amsterdam Film Festival; 'Best Short Film' at the prestigious 16th Annual Sedona International Film Festival Director's Choice Awards, judged and presented by Michael Moore; and 'Best International Film' at the 6th Annual HollyShorts Film Festival in Hollywood. The continued success of "Ronan's Escape" has seen it shared more than 54 million times over Facebook, Instagram & YouTube and solidified its own presence in pop culture among teens associated with its primary theme, as well as footage from the film being used in the music video for American pop star Demi Lovato's smash hit 'Believe in Me'.
Following the success of "Ronan's Escape", A.J. was commissioned to produce & direct "23" for James Cameron. The commercial starred "Avatar", "Titanic" and "Terminator" creator James Cameron himself alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger. The 60-second spot became the most successful commercial campaign ever run by the marketing company giant responsible.
A.J.'s company evolved and recently expanded with long-time writing partner Joe Brouillette and executive producer John Linton from the Smooth Motion Media Group, now based in Los Angeles, California. The SMMG harbors two production company subsidiaries: Dark Arts Entertainment (Motion Picture Film & Scripted Television production) and Primordial Entertainment (Reality, Science & Documentary Television).
In addition to the U.S. productions, A.J. has returned several times to his home town in Perth, Western Australia, to shoot multiple feature films as 2nd Unit Director, including John V. Soto's crime thriller 'The Reckoning', starring Jonathan LaPaglia and Luke Hemsworth, and Sci-Fi thriller 'The Gateway'.
A.J's focus is now firmly in the feature world, developing a multitude of motion-picture feature projects in the Thriller and Action/Sci-Fi genres. Alain Blazevic was born in Wiesbaden, Germany to Croatian parents. His father had a construction company, while his mother ran her own successful restaurant.
Growing up in Wiesbaden, he completed high school there before moving to Munich to study Law at the Ludwig-Maximillian-University. Having already experienced acting prior to this by performing in a theatre play, it didn't take long before he realized that Law won't be an adequate substitution for the ever more nagging acting-bug.
After reading a book about Lee-Strasberg's Method Acting he quit Law, packed his bags and got on a plane to Los Angeles. There he enrolled at the Lee-Strasberg Acting Academy where he completed a full program. Later he added master classes with Richard Pinter in New York to his education. Mr. Pinter was at that time the director of the Neighborhood Playhouse, which was acclaimed for Sanford Meisner's Acting technique.
In all these years he went from one odd job to another in order to support himself and finance his studies. Amongst many such occupations he worked as a Herbal-Sales Man at Fair's, painted houses, was a bouncer at clubs, and of course the traditional Waiter, Barman and Restaurant Manager.
He started to write screenplays on spec. One such screenplay got him a job as a Ghost-Writer within the Studio System. He kept doing that for several years.
After almost thirteen years of living in New York (which he considers his second home) and Los Angeles, working on independent movies and off-Broadway theater projects, he returned to Europe. Establishing a base in Berlin, where he collaborated with a German production company and wrote a screenplay titled 'Nachtrevue' for which he received in 2005 the German FFA Screenwriter's award/funding.
Feeling an urge to connect with the roots of his parents' home country, he packed his bags and exchanged the gray Berlin sky for the Mediterranean blue sea of Split, Croatia.
In an interview he described this move as purely emotional. There was no evidence that he could make a living being an actor or writer down in Split. He was however fine with that. "Fisherman will do" he said. Croatia, however had other plans for him. Within two years he became an established face on television playing lead roles in several drama series.
He expended this newfound joy in acting onto the European market. Playing in German movies and TV series guest starring roles. Venturing into int. Productions all over Europe and even Moscow.
Today he lives with his wife Elica in Paris, France.
Alain was raised Bi-lingual, speaking both German and Croatian. He also speaks English. Having a Slavic language background, he has with ease acted in Russian and Polish. Needless to say, that living in France he speaks French.
He is one of those rare polyglot actors who has an equally universal and adaptable face to go along with it.- Producer
