Lois Weber, who had been a street-corner evangelist before entering motion pictures in 1905, became the first American woman movie director of note, and a major one at that. Herbert Blaché, the husband of Frenchwoman Alice Guy, the first woman to direct a motion picture (and arguably, the first director of either gender to helm a fictional narrative film), cast her in the lead of "Hypocrites" (1908). Weber first got behind the camera on A Heroine of '76 (1911), a silent that was co-directed by pioneering American director Edwin S. Porter and actor Phillips Smalley, who played George Washington. She also starred in the picture.
In 1914, a year in which she helmed 27 movies, Weber co-directed William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice (1914) with Smalley, who also played Shylock, making her the first woman to direct a feature-length film in the US. (Jeanie Macpherson, who would play a major role in cinema as Cecil B. DeMille's favorite screenwriter, also acted in the film).
In the spirit of her evangelism, she began directing, writing and then producing films of social import, dealing with such themes as abortion, alcoholism, birth control, drug addiction and prostitution. By 1916 she had established herself as the top director at Universal Film Manufacturing (now Universal Studios), the top studio in America at the time, making her the highest-paid director in the world. The following year she formed Lois Weber Productions.
She directed over 100 films, but her production company went bankrupt in the 1920s as her career faltered. She did not make the transition to sound, although she did make one talkie, White Heat (1934), in 1934.- Lee Willard was born on 13 June 1873 in Peoria, Illinois, USA. The prolific songwriter and bandleader Vincent Rose was born in the Sicilian town of Palermo in June 1880. He emigrated to the United States in 1897 at the age of seventeen, but returned to Italy to complete his musical studies (piano and violin). Once again back in the U.S., Rose was initially employed as a musical director working for a chain of Chicago hotels. He formed his own orchestra in Southern California sometime between 1904 and 1906 (accounts vary), establishing a residency at the fashionable Cafe Montmartre on Hollywood Boulevard (the band became henceforth known as the Montmartre Orchestra). Patrons included the wealthy and the famous. Actors Roscoe 'Fatty' Arbuckle (on drums) and Tom Mix (on trumpet) occasionally gigged with the band and Harry Owens, future leader of the 'Royal Hawaiians', played trumpet and co-wrote the song "Linger Awhile" with Rose. The resulting hit broadened the band's appeal and opened doors for engagements at the Ritz-Carlton in New York and the College Inn in Chicago. Prominent members of the long-lived Montmartre Orchestra included Smith Ballew, Irving Kaufman and Chick Bullock.
Rose wrote many more successful tunes, often in collaboration with top songsmiths like Buddy G. DeSylva. Some of these were showcased on Broadway, notably in revues staged by the impresario Earl Carroll. Rose's most famous contributions as co-writer include "Whispering", "Avalon" and "Blueberry Hill", the latter a hit ballad for Glenn Miller in 1940, and, in 1956, an R&B mega hit for Fats Domino.
Rose quit the band scene in the mid-1930's to pursue other musical interests. - German novelist and playwright Bruno Frank was born in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1887, to a family with a long line of physicians and bankers (his father and grandfather were both bankers). He attended a preparatory school in Stuttgart, then transferred to a college in Thuringia. He received a Doctors degree in philosophy and literature from the University of Tubingen.
He published his first book, a collection of poems, at age 18. He soon moved to Munich--at the time considered the most cosmopolitan city in Germany--and got involved in the literary scene there. He became acquainted with such authors as Frank Wedekind, Rainer Maria Rilke, Wilhelm Speyer and Lion Feuchtwanger. and struck up what became a lifelong friendship with Thomas Mann. When World War I broke out Frank enlisted in the German army and saw action on the Russian front. He was severely wounded there, was sent back to Germany and spent several years recuperating at his home in Bavaria. After his recovery he embarked on a very successful career as a novelist and playwright, and also adapted and translated plays for the German stage by such foreign authors as Marcel Pagnol, Noël Coward and Sacha Guitry.
Frank had been alarmed by the growing power of the Nazi movement led by Adolf Hitler, and after the notorious Reichstag fire of 1933--in which Nazis burned down the German parliament building and blamed it on "Communists and Jews"--Frank, who was Jewish, saw the writing on the wall and he and his family left Germany. They lived in Switzerland and France for a while, then moved to Austria. However, when it became evident that Hitler was going to invade and take over Austria, Frank and his family left Europe entirely in 1937--Hitler swallowed up Austria the very next year--this time for the US, where he had been offered a position by a Hollywood studio.

She was born Violet McNaughton in Ontario, Canada, and absolved her acting studies in Chicago. After extensive touring with local stock companies and a few seasons on the vaudeville Orpheum Circuit performing in one-act plays, she landed a starring role on Broadway in the 1922 comedy hit "It's a Boy!". From then on, she was never out of work.
The screen, alas, saw very little of Jean Adair. She danced a waltz with Gene Kelly in a minor musical, Living in a Big Way (1947). Otherwise, we remember her from her one indelible performance, a role she created for the original stage version of the long-running black farce and subsequent film version, Arsenic and Old Lace (1944): as Martha Brewster, one of two goofy spinster aunts (the other was Josephine Hull), who dispatch lonely old geezers by poisoning their elderberry wine. - Jean Adair was born on 13 June 1873 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
