In a world weary of war and dispirited by the ravages of the Great Depression, Hollywood at the turn of the 1940s concocted a wildly popular, effective lot of escapist fare (though often cheaply made) to regale the sick at heart worldwide. Universal Pictures, more often than not, led in producing such films. We know about the monster movies: wolf men, invisible men -- and invisible women too, for that matter. We know about Sherlock Holmes chasing not killer hounds in 1890 but chasing killer Nazis a half- century later. Such were among typical Universal "B" productions. Enter Maria de Santo Silas -- Maria Montez. This daughter of a Spanish diplomat traveled extensively after being educated in the Canary Islands and attempted, albeit unsuccessfully, to establish herself as a stage actress in Europe. In 1940 she found herself in New York City, a model. Her screen career began in 1941, with Universal casting her in bit parts. On account of her strikingly exotic looks and her exotic accent, the studio soon paired her with other "exotics" (Sabu and Turhan Bey), and usually with a more "home-style" hero (Jon Hall), in a series of low-budget adventures, filmed in Technicolor and situated in fantasy lands, with Montez herself often situated in revealing dress. With Montez threatened by all manner of nastiness -- from evil caliphs to man-eating sharks to her own cobra-worshipping twin sister (!) -- her pictures soon became immensely popular, even though she could not really act, could not dance and could not sing. Audiences flocked to see her films, just to witness the trials and endurance of an alluring beauty in distress (as well, perhaps, as to glimpse some scantily clad, beauteous flesh). The Depression having long since passed, the end of World War II meant also the end of flying carpets and sand dunes and deadly reptiles as potential subjects for attracting moviegoers. That bit of history, plus a bit of girth added to Montez's frame, led her and her husband, the actor Jean-Pierre Aumont, to abandon Hollywood for Europe, where she would appear in a handful of French and Italian adventure films. On 7 September 1951 Maria Montez was discovered drowned in her bath, possibly having first suffered a heart attack.- Actor

After a year of study in philosophy and literature at the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo, he switched to the Conservatorio Nacional de Música where he finished his undergraduate study. Guerra was a great admirer at this time of the nueva canción, embodied by Pablo Milanés, Silvio Rodríguez and Facundo Cabral.
After finishing his study at the Santo Domingo conservatory, Guerra went to the Berklee College of Music in Boston to study composition and arranging.
After his return to the Dominican Republic, he released his first album, Soplando (1984) with a group of local musicians which subsequently became known as Juan Luis Guerra y 440. The 440 part of the band's name refers to the standard tuning "A=440."
Two albums followed, Mudanza y Acarreo and Mientras más lo pienso ... tú. Although they saw little acclaim internationally, the band garnered some fame in their country, resulting in them being nominated to represent the Dominican Republic at the prestigious Festival OTI.
Their next album, in 1989, brought them international fame. Ojalá que Llueva Cafe became a number one hit in many Latin American countries, with the hit song of the same name. Subsequently, a video of the hit song was filmed and Juan Luis Guerra and his 4-40 band began touring. (The song's fame was revived in 1996 with a cover by Café Tacuba). In 1990, they released their next album, Bachata Rosa, which also became a major hit, selling more than 5 million copies at that time, and allowing Guerra to keep touring Latin America, USA and Europe. This album contains memorable love songs such as "Burbujas de amor" and "Estrellitas y Duendes".
Guerra became a controversial figure in the Dominican Republic after he released his next album, Areito. "Areito" (1992), featured the hit single "El costo de la vida," ("The Cost of Living") but the video version was banned in several countries.
He protested against the poor conditions in many Latin American countries, the celebration of the "Americas' Discovery, (1492)" and the double standard policies of first world nations. ('Areito' is a Taino word for song and dance).
That situation might have had something to do with his next album, Fogaraté (1995), where he stayed away from recording any protest songs.
One of his most recent albums, Ni es lo Mismo ni es Igual (1998), garnered much critical acclaim. It won three Latin Grammys in 2000.
In 2004, Guerra released his first new album in six years. Entitled "Para Ti", the album's songs are mostly religious in nature, reflecting Guerra's conversion to evangelical Christianity. With this album the singer won two awards at the 2005 Billboards in the categories of Gospel-Pop and Tropical-Merengue. In the same time, Guerra was honored with the Latino Special Award for the Music Academy of Spain for his contributions to the music of his country and the Caribbean in the last 20 years.- Isary Perez was born on 8 June 2005 in the Dominican Republic.

Alfonso DiLuca is a Dominican-American actor, writer and entrepreneur. He was born in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola. His twenty-five year acting career spans stage and screen in Miami, New York and Los Angeles.
Alfonso is best known most recently for his role as "Jorge", in the beloved and popular TV series "Jane the Virgin". He is also known for memorable roles in hit Hispanic soap-operas like "Prisionera" (as Tito Cabello) and "La Viuda de Blanco" with NBC/Telemundo, which have been translated into numerous languages and distributed in worldwide syndication. Other works include the role of "Cristo" in "Burn Notice", as well as participations in multiple American TV series as "NCIS: New Orleans" and "Days of Our Lives" among others.
Alfonso got his first taste of acting about the age of ten. Through a connection from his businessman father, Alfonso appeared on Dominican television commercials promoting American products. In those school days, Alfonso also loved writing and drawing, and he made fun and profit by producing comic books that he wrote and sold to students at school. DiLuca is fully bilingual and university-educated in both English and Spanish, allowing him to speak English with a slight, flexible Hispanic accent, and to deliver a dynamic cross-cultural charm to all his roles. The much-younger brother of three children, Alfonso's childhood home was a social and artistic milieu frequented by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family and friends, high-ranking politicians, painters, sculptors and musicians. The family prospered in the 1960's and 70's in business and politics, and encouraged artistic endeavors. Alfonso's mother Nidia Cuervo became a recognized painter in the Dominican Republic who participated in exhibitions and received awards for her work. His abuela on his mother's side was a composer of music and the first female radio newscaster in the Dominican Republic.
DiLuca came of age zooming on his motorbike through the steamy streets of Santo Domingo as his attention turned to poetry and romance. He was drawn to studying, memorizing, and performing the classic Spanish poets, from Cervantes to Lope de Vega, as well as his own works within close circles. The family had political aspirations for the promising teenager, and Alfonso began to travel along the campaign trail with candidates who were often family members or friends. Winding through the rugged mountainous interior in long truck caravans, the political campaigners snaked across the island from town-to-town conducting rallies, delivering inspirational speeches, and distributing trinkets to humble locals. DiLuca absorbed the realities of island life, both inside and outside of the city. He gained a deep knowledge of the hardships, enthusiasm, and warm affection of the Dominican people. These early experiences continue to inform the authentic characters that DiLuca brings forth in his acting and writing.
In 1987, during his last year at the prestigious university, Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC), Alfonso received the award Primera Mención Honorífica for Poetry Writing. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics the following spring. By then, Alfonso had made the decision to leave the island and follow his passion for artistic and entrepreneurial endeavors in the United States. Accompanied by three boxes of his beloved books and a suitcase, Alfonso grabbed a bunk on a cargo ship crossing the 826 miles northwest to Miami, Florida. He enrolled in the International English Program at Florida State University in Tallahassee where he quickly completed the program and obtained the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) certification demonstrating English proficiency. To further improve his skills, Alfonso studied photography, and in 1994 received the certification Applied Professional Photography, from the Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale. He became a United States citizen while living in Miami.
DiLuca enrolled in the studio of renowned south-Florida acting coach Stewart Solomon and promptly became one of its most respected members by fellow students and Solomon himself. He was sought-after for his comedic timing and confident presence, and soon began to receive offers of representation. A Miami talent agent offered commercial representation after seeing Alfonso in one of Solomon's exhibitions of scenes and monologues. DiLuca's work attracted the attention of acclaimed Cuban-American acting coach and theater director, Teresa Maria Rojas and her colleagues. The mercurial Teresa Maria Rojas had founded Prometeo Theater Group, a principal bilingual theater in Miami. With Prometeo, Alfonso starred in several successful plays produced by this innovative theater company. After Prometeo, Alfonso was immersed in the Theater scene in Miami, where he co-starred in many plays by Hispanic and American playwrights. He made a name for himself in popular Latino Theater productions among the luminaries of Hispanic theater such as Zully Montero and Marta Picanes. A producer from the Hispanic television channel Telemundo contacted DiLuca's agent, opening the doors for Alfonso to enter the Telenovela (Spanish Soap Opera) world. He began to land supporting roles in Telenovelas, then co-starring in the popular "Ladrón de Corazónes" (Thief of Hearts), "Los Teens" (The Teens), "Prisionera" (Woman Prisoner) and "La Viuda de Blanco" (The Widow in White), among others. In 2001 Alfonso spent a year in New York City studying acting at Manhattan workshops, while appearing in industrials and commercials. After returning to his lucrative career in Miami, Alfonso even influenced Telemundo producers to cast his real-life mother, Nidia Cuervo, to play his "on-screen" mother in the popular Prisionera.
Alfonso has been based in the Los Angeles area since 2008. The veteran actor appears regularly in commercials, industrials, print ads, films, and television shows. He is the author of numerous registered scripts including Hispanic-themed (Bilingual) Screenplays, Comedy Series, Pilots and Short Films. His story lines treat themes related to Latin American historical fiction and current events.
He is currently developing a socio-political Dominican-American feature film action/drama. He is a collector of scientific books, an avid reader, a student of languages and anthropology, as well as an advanced scuba diver. So far, he has traveled to over 20 countries.- Rafa Rosario was born on 28 December 1958 in Higüey, Dominican Republic. - From childhood he enjoyed a life of luxury. In early childhood, Rubirosa moved to Paris with his father, where he headed the Dominican legation in France. In the French capital, Rubirosa enjoyed two years of university education. At the same time, he developed a strong affinity for nightlife and sports. Returning to the Dominican Republic, Rubirosa joined the army there. In 1932, as a lieutenant, he was personal assistant to the dictator Rafael Léonida Trujillo Molina. At an international polo competition, Rubirosa met the dictator's older daughter, Flor de Oro Trujillo, who had also previously studied in Paris. The lovers married in December 1932. As a result, thanks to his father-in-law's favor, Rubirosa made a career in the civil service. He worked, among other things, as Undersecretary of State for Foreign Relations and as President of the state insurance company. In 1934 he was promoted to captain in the army.
In 1935, a politically undesirable Dominican exile was murdered in New York: Rubirosa was also linked to the act, which was ordered by Rafael Trujillo and carried out by one of his relatives, but he always denied his involvement. A little later, Rubirosa was promoted to diplomatic service in 1936: he was sent with his wife Flor de Oro to National Socialist Germany, where he was deployed as first secretary in the Dominican embassy and first attracted the attention of the international press and bitterness as a plaboy and bon vivant attracted his wife's attention. His marriage to the dictator's daughter ended in divorce in 1937, but this did not affect his friendship with the head of state, who appointed him ambassador of the Dominican Republic to Argentina in 1938. A year later, Rubirosa arrived in France as a diplomatic envoy, where he was wounded in a mysterious shootout on the streets of Paris.
It was also the year in which the Second World War was started by Hitler's Germany. After the German occupation of France, the Dominican diplomat was imprisoned by the Gestapo every six months. After his release, Rubirosa met the French actress Danielle Darrieux, with whom he was married for five years. At the same time, however, he continued to pursue his affairs. He was then briefly married to the rich tobacco heiress Doris Duke. At the end of 1952, Rubirosa met the film star Zsa-Zsa Gabor in New York, with whom he had a highly publicized affair. A few years later he married her sister, Eva Gabor. In the 1950s, Rubirosa was in the headlines so often for adultery, which had destroyed the marriages of several prominent couples, that dictator Trujillo had to temporarily suspend him from diplomatic service.
The next stop in Rubirosa's married life at the end of 1953 was Barbara Hutton, the granddaughter of the Woolworth founder, another rich heiress. However, the connection only lasted until February of the following year. When another Dominican exile was murdered in the United States on Trujillo's orders in 1956, the press again linked Rubirosa to the crime, who denied any involvement. That same year, the playboy married 19-year-old French actress Odile Rodin, with whom he had his last marriage. Until the end, Rubirosa's married life was repeatedly disturbed and interrupted by affairs and sex affairs. His lovers included Soraya of Persia, Evita Peron, Marilyn Monroe and Veronica Lake. Thanks to his scandalous love life, Rubirosa became the most famous playboy of his time. In addition to his affairs with women, Rubirosa was particularly enthusiastic about racing. So he drove the Carrera Panamericana. Rubirosa also enjoyed playing polo.
When sanctions were imposed on Trujillo's regime by the Organization of American States in 1960, Rubirosa tried to defend the dictatorship by intervening with President John F. Kennedy. When Rafael Trujillo was assassinated in May 1961, the diplomat remained loyal to his son and other representatives of the regime. In 1962 Rubirosa was dismissed from the diplomatic service. After losing diplomatic immunity, he had to undergo an interrogation by the New York prosecutor's office in connection with the murder of the exiled Dominicans, which ended without charges.
Rubirosa died on July 5, 1965 in Paris after driving his Ferrari into a tree in the Bois de Boulogne.
The legend of Plaboy lived on after his death. Numerous dining establishments around the world named themselves after the dandy. In 1992, Andreas Zielcke and Kurt Scheel published the book "The Last Playboy. The Life of Porfirio Rubirosa". The dramaturg published in 2003 in New York the radio play "Splendor and Death of Porfirio Rubirosa", which clearly reconstructs the biography of the bon vivant. In 2004, the novel "Playboy" was published in Austria, with which Armin Rachet presented a fictional and ironic expansion of Rubirosa's life story. - Actress
