Conversely, 'RUNIN' marks a 180 degree turn: shot in grand, epic-style, it is a period piece set on Hachijo Island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Keiko Matsuzaka, a top rank actress in her native Japan and International Ballet Superstar Kazuhiro Nishijima makes his debut alongside her. Screenwriter Izuru Narushima and Director of Photography Hirokazu Ishii rejoin the director for their 2nd consecutive film collaboration. Conviction and creative vision of Eiji Okuda brought together both the old and the new generations of Japanese talent on this project.
- Makoto's class begins to prepare for the upcoming festival, during which time Setsuna, convinced he is now dating Sekai, tells the group that he and Kotonoha split.
- Sekai is absent from class the following morning; after keeping Makoto from walking home with Kotonoha, Setsuna convinces him to visit her.
- Kotonoha talks to Setsuna about the kiss, and the effects it would have on Sekai if she found out. The festival continues the next day, with Makoto, Sekai, and Hikari making baked goods for their classroom cafe.

With several box office successes under his belt, Yoshimitsu Morita knows what audiences like, and Umineko is no exception!
